Application Form About the Institute
The Pain Management Research Institute consists of
a multidisciplinary group of health professionals and
research staff who are collaborating in education and
research to improve pain treatment in adults and
children. The staff include:
Medical specialists in pain medicine,
psychiatry, rheumatology and palliative care
Registered nurses;
Clinical psychologists;
Physiotherapists; and
Basic and applied scientists.
Clinical treatment, teaching and research activities
extend from acute pain (e.g. post operative and
trauma) to chronic non-cancer pain (e.g. low back
pain, post amputation pain, herpes) and cancer pain
management.
The Institute facilitates an articulated online Masters
program in Pain Management, in association with
The University of Sydney. Individuals can access
single units of study from this program for continuing
education purposes.

Workshop Outline Workshop Details
This two week (8 days) workshop is based on the IASP core curriculum and facilitated by leading specialists in the field of pain management. It is designed for professionals with an interest in learning about current views and approaches to the assessment and management of pain.
Week 1: The Problem of PainThe first week introduces participants to the extent of the problem and explores pain contributors and assessment.
Topic areas include: EpidemiologyThe person living with pain Acute pain servicesBiopsychosocial aspects of painPharmacologyAcute post-surgical painPlaceboNeuropathic painVisceral painOrofacial painNeuroimmuneDiagnostic and procedural interventions
Week 2: The Management of Pain In the second week participants explore current principles of pain management.
Topic areas include: Musculoskeletal pain assessment and managementPsychology of pain: cognitive behavioural therapyEthics Pain and mood, and associated risksComplementary therapies in pain managementRole of opioids in chronic non-cancer painPain and significant othersPain in infants, children and the elderlyDisability and pain rehabilitation issuesComplex regional pain syndromeInterdisciplinary team management
For students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters, please note that Week 1 essentially covers Semester 1 content and Week 2 covers Semester 2 content of the first year of the program.
