2013 ANNUAL REPORTWORKING TO SUSTAIN OUR REGION

A few weeks ago we named the two gathering spaces in our main office. That may seem like inside base-ball, but the choices tell a lot about Forterra. They’re named for two people who changed the game; beacons for what we aim to accomplish with the Cascade and Olympic Agendas.

We named one our Imogen Cunningham gathering space. Imogen was a pioneer in photography and es-tablished herself as a game changing artist in a game changing medium. Her early Mount Rainier photo-graphs, with her husband as foreground subject, are full of whimsy and dreaminess as they capture the grandeur of the landscape.

We named the other after Jane Jacobs, who sat through much of the 1950’s at a window above a candy store at 555 Hudson Street in New York City quietly watching the street below. By a sort of alchemy, she turned her astute observations into the acclaimed book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, which changed forev-er our understanding of what cities are all about; dis-tilling the essence of and threats to great urban neigh-borhoods.

Together Imogen Cunningham and Jane Jacobs book-end our Cascade and Olympic Agendas, and inspire us at Forterra to think big and to push boundaries. In the spirit of Imogen, we are dedicated to conserving our working and wild landscapes and to recognizing our place in them. With Jane as our guide, we work to create cities and towns where our families live not by default, but active celebratory choice.

It is not a matter of achieving one of these missions over the other. They are intertwined. Working for both, we better our chances of achieving each. Our hope is that this annual report amply demonstrates we are living up to the legacy of these two pioneering Americans who changed the game.

2013 HIGHLIGHTS

• Successfully eradicated invasive knotweed from all properties (public and private) on the Cedar River, from the protected upper watershed all the way to the city of Renton.

• Completed comprehensive Stewardship Plans for all of the properties we are protecting along the I-90 corridor to provide safe travel routes for native wildlife.

• Completed 1st year of the Restore the Duwamish Shoreline Challenge, YTD engaging nearly 600 volunteers for almost 2000 hours, clearing invasives from 40,000 sq. ft. of shoreline and installing 3000 native plants.

• Cedar River Stewardship in Action won $315K of grant funds in the last year to continue our public-private land restoration partnership along the Lower Cedar River through 2015.

• Completed multi-year restoration projects at Smoke Farm (Snohomish Co.), Union River (Mason Co.) and Queets (Jefferson/Grays Harbor Co.), totaling 51 acres of habitat restored including removal of knotweed along almost 2000 linear feet of streambank, eradicating a 6-acre patch of knotweed, and planting over 23,000 native trees and shrubs.

• Stewarded 15,000 acres of Forterra owned properties and conservation easements across our region.

• More than 1,500 acres of forested natural areas are currently under restoration in six cities— Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Kirkland, Redmond, and Kent.

• Actively working to bring on at least one new Green City in 2014—current candidates include Puyallup, Tukwila, and Olympia.

• Created a paid internship program designed to give young people experience in engaging diverse communities in habitat restoration while developing their leadership, outreach, and community building skills.

• Trained dozens of Seattle citizens to care for street and right of way trees and teach others how to care for their privately owned trees in an effort to further grow Seattle’s urban tree canopy cover.

• Completed a multiyear research initiative demonstrating the ecosystem services our urban forests provide including carbon sequestration, pollution reduction and energy savings.

• Teanaway: The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), and Forterra purchased 50,272 acres in the headwaters of the Yakima Basin watershed that will be designated as the Teanaway Community Forest.

• I-90 Wildlife Corridors: A 57 acre parcel was purchased by Forterra and donated to WA State Parks and Recreation Commission and a 640 acre parcel was purchased and given to WA Department of Fish and Wildlife. Both projects were purchased from Plum Creek Timber Company using Section 6 Endangered Species Act money and will be managed to provide more habitat connectivity for native wildlife such as bears, elk, and owls.

• Estuary Conservation: Forterra facilitated the purchase of the Smith Creek property –120 acres of high-quality estuarine, riparian and forest land on Smith Creek, a tributary of the Naselle River on southern Willapa Bay. The land was transferred to WDFW for permanent conservation.

• Mitigation Banking: Four perpetual conservation easements were placed on 509 acres for future wetland habitat mitigation banks in Clark and Skagit Counties to protect and restore wildlife and waterfowl habitat.

POLICY

• TDR: With the passage of the countywide Snohomish County TDR program, all Cascade Agenda counties have adopted TDR programs (3 of which Forterra helped create or expand), fulfilling a major near-term Cascade Agenda goal. 143,000 acres of forest, farm, and habitat lands have been conserved with this tool to-date.

• Landscape Conservation and Local Infrastructure Program: 12 cities have pursued the use of LCLIP, including Seattle, whose program is expected to conserve 25,000 acres of farms and forests and generate nearly $30 million in additional revenue for projects that will improve the attractiveness and quality of life in South Lake Union and downtown.

• Neighborhood Greenways: Forterra organized a community steering team to strategize for implementation of Federal Way’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. In collaboration with the steering team, Forterra designed this city’s first neighborhood greenway in the Twin Lakes/Westway neighborhood, and it was adopted by Federal Way City Council in March 2014.

• Community Connectors: In partnership with the City of Tukwila and others, Forterra designed a community liaison program in 2012, which was launched in 2013 through equity and diversity trainings, community planning trainings, and a project focused on bringing new voices to the city’s Comprehensive Plan update process.

• Evergreen Carbon Capture ( formerly C3): 14 companies mitigated their carbon footprint through this program. Each company identified ways in which they could shrink their impact and implemented techniques for this decrease. Forterra then worked with community partners to plant 4,200 trees throughout the region on 15 sites to mitigate for the remaining carbon emissions from these companies.
