Once again we were overwhelmed with the huge efforts and generosity of our

wonderful Friends at the White Swan in Littleover. Our Senior Youth Group

enjoyed tea at the pub and eagerly awaited the cheque presentation. What an

amazing night we had. The community raised a whopping £11,000 throughout the

year, including their annual golf day and family fun day. Our special friend Brian

Ward passed away in the Autumn and as he fundraised for many years we felt it

was a fitting tribute to include the donations made in his memory to the final total.

This made a staggering £11,800. We know how hard it is to raise this amount of

money and how hard everyone works to support children and young adults with

disabilities, we are so incredibly grateful to everyone. We cannot thank them

enough. To all our Friends at the White Swan we wanted to say a HUGE THANK

YOU.

At Umbrella House the children focussed on the symbol of the poppy on Remembrance Day. They also had a ‘Frozen’ themed day in anticipation of the release of the second film. During half term there was a show and tell and story telling day as well as an Autumn themed day where we enjoyed a walk to the new park on Langley Country Park. Within the community the children have watched a performance of ‘Stick Man’ at Derby Theatre, been to Markeaton Park to visit Paint-A-Pot and took a trip to Bluebell’s farm.

Amy has been to Oxygen this month. She has grown in confidence and self belief. By the end of the session she was jumping on her own trampoline with her hands in the air and a huge smile on her face!

Our weekday groups at Umbrella enjoyed planning an exciting variety of activities including themed days at Umbrella House. When at Umbrella House, the young adult’s are able to promote and build their independence skills whether that’s through using computers, being creative or through cooking and baking activities. Here are some of our wonderful young adults putting their food prep skills to good use and creating their own meals using a range of fresh ingredients that they have chosen and bought from the local shops. They enjoy working together as a team to create delicious meals and demonstrate good skills in using various pieces of kitchen equipment.

We like to celebrate all of our young adult’s achievements including those that happen outside of Umbrella. Becky attends the gym at Derby Arena and this month, she was awarded member of the month. Derby Arena had the following to say about Becky— “Becky brightens the gym with her infectious smile and always gives 100% in all of her training. Becky loves training at the Arena as there are more machines that she can use here than were available at her previous gym.” Becky along with her trainer Steve have completed several Derby 10km races and also the Robin Hood half marathon raising much needed monies for various local charities. Well done Becky! This is a wonderful achievement.

Christmas Meals—Various Dates

Don’t’ forget to book in for your Support Group Christmas Meals by telephoning the Family support team.

SHOUT ABOUT SEND 5K—The purpose is to support inclusive sports opportunities for young people who are inactive out of school. There are incredibly talented young people who have great sporting ability but due to their learning disabilities and complex needs they receive very few opportunities to participate in sport. St Martins school are working hard with clubs across the region to support them in becoming more inclusive. This event showcased the talents of their students. The clubs present worked hard to become more inclusive and shared nformation with young people and families. We know exercise is for our well being and mental health, leading an active lifestyle and participating in sport can have such great benefits for young people with additional needs, helping with social skills, communication and positive mental health. I had a really good time meeting families, sharing Umbrella information, and meeting future volunteers. I watched in total awe at the students taking part in the 5k, and enjoyed their happy smiles as they reached the finish line. Well done everyone.

Sensory Swim — 18th February

Come and join us for a family fun sensory swimming session at Victoria Park Leisure Centre, Ilkeston. More details to follow.

On October 18 Umbrella held its annual market place event. We bought together providers of services for children, young people and families from all over Derbyshire under one roof for our members to meet. We had a hugely enjoyable day and enjoyed seeing so many families attending and receiving such brilliant information and support. We have had some really great feedback and will be running the event again next October. If you would like to give feedback on the event or suggest providers for next years event please do contact Hannah on 785658. [email protected]

During October half term we ran a drumming session with Nikki from Tribal Vibes, this was a very active and fun event which was enjoyed thoroughly. The group sounded amazing. More drumming sessions to follow next year. Photo below: Participants with crossed fingers to celebrate lottery funding

As you are aware Umbrella relies on the generosity of kind people and organisations to raise funds on our behalf. Without community support we would be unable to provide some of our much needed services for children and young adults with disabilities. Last week we were invited to talk to a group of delegates from Toyota about Corporate Social Responsibility and the difference their support can make to charities like ours. Over recent years Toyota has helped Umbrella in so many different ways, the manufacturing plant at Burnaston and Toyota Inchcape Derby have all helped towards the refurbishment of Umbrella House and employees have received match funding to boost our fundraising targets. Following our thank you we were absolutely delighted to receive two specially adapted tricycles for

our children. Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK and Mission Cycles kindly donated the tricycles in time for the October half term holiday activities. You will see from the look on Zander's face how thrilled he was. Thank you so much Toyota and Mission Cycles, you have made such a difference.

Other information

Thank you so much to everyone who saves their crisp packets for us. We sent

20kg off last week and received £44!

Terracycle have become much stricter on how packets should be sent as their

scheme has grown very fast so we need your help to keep up with their efficiencies!

They want all the packets flattened, we can only send one parcel at a time and we

can only send a minimum of 8kg (this equates to a box about the size of an under

counter fridge!). They may also deduct points from us if we send unacceptable

waste.

If you could flatten the packets (unfolded) before handing them in, this would save us

a huge amount of time. We can then pack larger quantities much quicker into the

box and it saves us having to unfold and flatten them which takes a while with so

many! Here’s a reminder of what we can send:

> Any brand of single crisp packet (including vegetable crisps) > Any brand of large share bag of crisps > Any brand of multipack packaging

> Popcorn packets > Peanut packets > Mini cheddar packets > Chocolate bar packaging

The bulletin will be back in February 2020. See you then!
