WORK OFASSAD ANSAR

I am born and raised in Oslo, from a place called Ekeberg. I am graduated with Masters degree in Architecture june 2014 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.

During my studies, I have experience from several building sites and as an intern abroad. The study has provided me with several oppertunities to travel around the world and inspire my architectural design. I have been fortunate to work with TYIN-tegnestue and Sami Rintala and realize several projects during the studies. In 2011-12, two fellow students and I planned and built a youth center in Senegal by using local materials and resources. The project recieved worldwide attention.

Besides being a devoted architect I also share a passion for photography (i have taken all photos in this portfolio), video making and sports. While i was studying, I danced Hip Hop actively and played football in third division for the university.

01URBAN KINDERGARTENSPRING 2014

The project is based on a curiosity on what happens when a kindergarten is being matched up against a denser and urban structure, and a wish to challenge the typi-cal kindergarten model.

The site is 42m long and just 6m wide and is connected to a large public space. By com-bining the use of strong colors and build-ing individual units I think this area can come to life again. Furthermore i wish to implement same language onto the public space, and light it all up when its dark.

Last but not least I wish to challenge the view towards security in kindergartens. I think many kindergartens are perceived as closed and bounded. How can the public space and the city be a part of the kinder-gartens outdoor space without defining it with physical boundaries?

The kindergarten is made up of individ-ual units seperated with open spaces in between. The open space function as outdoor playground with asphalt on the ground. The units are placed so they break a linear movement, where each unit spans over two levels. Some units are provided with a playing “box”. The box is only enter-able by children and a place to hide or to just seek a moment of privacy.

The vertical element in each unit has a dis-tinguished color, matching to its facade. Interior walls, roof and floor are all made of light wood.

LIVING WITH WETLAND02SPRING 2013

Littering is a major problem in the city of Coronel especially around the wet-land. Lack of waste management and environmental awareness leads people to dispose their garbage into the wet-land, underrestimating its value.

We need first off all proper waste man-agement. Recycling centers needs to be build on a small scale and on walkable distance to prevent people from dump-ing into the wetland. Small infocen-ters implemented with other functions should be placed close to the wetland, preventing but also educating people.

MASTERPLAN AND HOUSINGThe masterplan is suggested for an area which is today used as a dumping spot. Unfortunately, the wetland does not grow here anymore. The strategy is to build adaptable and expandable settle-ments near the wetland as towers and smaller settlements on the nearby hill.

The plan is that you build your own house, especially the towers, and there-fore only basic construction shell is pro-vided. These settlements can hopefully be subsidized by the goverment and replace the illegal and unhealthy shanty towns near by in the future.

The towers are arranged in clusters, and function as guardians of the wetland. The height provides good view and the boarwalk in-between leads visitiors and residents from one cluster to another. Strategy is that homes on the edge naturally defines a boundary to the wetland, and people do not throw garbage where they live. Furthermore, the boardwalk would let the wetland adapt to its surrounding and grow peacefully into the settlements.

ASYLUM CENTER03AUTUMN 2012in collaboration with Helene Wiik Jahnsen

The task was to design a reception center and temporary housing for asylum seek-ers at Kalvkinnet in Trondheim. Asylum seekers are a vurnerable group of people who need privacy and security to pro-cess what has happened, but also a place where they can be seen and noticed.

Majority of decentralized asylum centers are suitable for families, while central-ized reception centers are better for sin-gles and those without children. Same reports from residents and staff have shown that loneliness is seen as a major problem among single refugee, and the social aspect of living in communities is important.

We want to provide residents with suf-ficient privacy, but not hide them from each other and the outside world. The residents should be able to choose dif-ferent levels of exposure, and to remain where they feel most comfortable at dif-ferent times.

PROJECT NIAFOURANG04AUTUMN 2011/12in collaboration with Andreas Brunvoll and Tore Hansen Grimstad

I and two fellow students travelled to Nia-fourang, a small coastal village in the Casa-mance region of Senegal, to plan and build a youth centre. The village is very poor with a high unemployment rate and the intention was to create opportunities, jobs and devel-opment in the village. An important aspect of the project was to involve the local com-munity in both the building and planning stages, in order to create a sense of owner-ship and pride in the resulting building.

There is no electricity in the village so apart from the use of a battery powered drill, no electrical devices where used. There was great enthusiasm surrounding the project and the entire village partook in volunteer work. This was entirely essential for the com-pletion of the building in the limited time-frame and very important for the buildings future.

The Youth Center is already in use and will hopefully contribute to positive develop-ment in Niafourang. We hope the building and planning process has left the local com-munity as inspired as it has left us.

BICYCLE CENTER05SPRING 2011in collaboration with Torbjørn Våge and Julie Cranner Seip

The main idea is to create a bicycle center with low threshold for use. An inspiring en-vironment, which facilitate cycling. Just like a park, it is a public place where everyone can live and develop freely. It is also important that the building appears as a bike mascot for the city of Trondheim, and a portal on the way into the town. The area is character-ized by its neighbor to the west, Lerkendal stadium, and it is important not to compete with it.

The bike’s premise is surfaces, not slopes, and therefore the projects intent and main grip is horizontality. This is reflected in the building’s form having a horizontal section of the heavy (base), the light (bike park) and the closed (office disk.)

The components and the entirety of the building will impose a Nordic forest. The base (ramp and bike park) is the heavy sway-ing forest floor, the vertical tree trunks form-ing pillars and office floor the forest crown. Color-wise, the building will serve as a can-vas for the vibrant green trees.

WORKSHOP/PHOTOGRAPHY

DESIGN IN CONTEXTSPRING 201306

Workshop done in collaboration with Sami Rintala and Pasi Alto. The pavillion is located outside Coronel in Chile. The workshop was part of the course Design in Context.

This pavilion is one of three small interventions done near the wetlands. By highlighting the qualities found on each spot, we hope this can pro-voke a more positive and sustainable approach among the locals to-wards the wetland and prevent them from littering the area.

The boardwalk is connected with a local walkway and runs through the vegetation with minmal impact on both ground and its surroundings. It rises gradually throughout the boardwalk and ends as a bench. The spot is excellent for birdwatching or just for a short break in the wild.

TRESTYKKERSPRING 201207

TRESTYKKER is an independent workshop for students across three Architecture schools in Norway. The workshop is solely run by students.

The purpose of the workshop is to shed light over the architecture stu-dent as an active resource, capable of creating living architecture that stimulate use in otherwise empty public spaces. A parallel goal was to give students practical knowledge of the Architectural process, from the creative idea, to realizing and constructing the project.

The project took place at Bjørvika, right next to the Norwegian Opera. It is a tranformation of a abandoned and destroyed pier into a small public stage for intimate concerts. The “Boathouse” is made of prefab-ricated plywood assembled on site and clad in Kebony.
