The in building for 25 years

Members of Brymor’s healthcare division have been working on a very challenging

project for the last 48 weeks at Royal Surrey County Hospital. The works consisted of the construction of a new Endoscopy Unit sited on the 1st floor roof directly above the hospital main entrance. With the project’s location being in close proximity to the general public, health and safety control has been paramount on this scheme to ensure the project runs smoothly with continuity of service to the everyday running of the hospital. The new department is a steel frame structure with single ply roof covering; external walls are insulated render

and standing seam metal cladding. The works also included the construction of a new twin lift and extension of an existing staircase.

Internally, metal stud partitions, suspended ceilings, vinyl floor coverings and various fixtures and furnishings were inserted.

The building services within the new facility consist of hot and cold water installation, heating, mechanical ventilation, above ground drainage, power distribution, lighting, telecoms, fire alarms, nurse call, medical gases, IT wireways, autoscope installation (ENI) and security installations.

The project came with many challenges including:• Crane affecting the MRI scanner within the

hospital which resulted in specific working hours for our teams

• 2012 was the wettest May and June on record• Very restricted site in close proximity to the

general public• Stringent fire procedures • Tight programme • Buildability issues

However despite all of the challenges our team faced, we have completed a fantastic project to our client’s expectations. Both the Trust and the end users are delighted with the facility we have produced and as a result we are receiving further tendering opportunities.

A massive congratulations to our project team; Steve Evans, project manager, Mark Ware, site manager, Patrick Osman, QS as well as all of our approved subcontractors and suppliers who helped us to deliver this exciting scheme.

open to all organisations of all sizes across all industries, and seeks to promote high standards of health and safety management practice in order to prevent workplace injury and ill health. Winners of the award must demonstrate their commitment and determination to prevent workplace injuries and work-related ill health.

Brymor have been awarded this accolade for eight consecutive years and are proud that the department’s hard work and commitment to continuously improve the health and safety at Brymor has been recognised.

Recognition for Brymor Management SystemsBrymor’s Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) management system has recently been audited by Achilles as part of our ongoing registration on the Utilities Vendor Data Base (UVDB).

The audit involves the scheme visiting our administrative offices and a site location where they examine all aspects of our management

system, and the SHE performance of our work locations. The scheme provides all companies with a compliance percentage for each element of the audit, and Brymor systems were recognised as extremely robust with scores of 95% for health and safety, 94% for environment, and 100% for quality management.

In addition, Brymor has also been audited by the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS), and has been assessed as compliant ensuring we are maintaining the highest standards of safety, health and environmental management.

Our directors have recently analysed the

company and to enhance our performance

throughout the whole lifecycle of a project Roger

Halford has been appointed the position of senior

planner.

Roger’s main role is to establish, maintain

and operate a planning system in accordance

with Brymor’s quality processes and procedures.

In order to bring about a successful contract

completion, Roger will provide effective

planning, control and technical support to the

preconstruction and project teams throughout the

life of each project.

With the recent announcement we thought it

would be a great idea to give all our stakeholders

an insight into Roger, and his career so far.

Roger started out as an apprentice carpenter

and joiner in 1970 and quickly progressed to take

on the role of a small works supervisor for a local

building contractor in Southampton. To gain further

experience within the construction industry Roger

took the position of a finishing foreman with a

national contractor, progressing very quickly to site

manager level, managing various projects from

residential developments to the construction of

naval buildings. Having gained valuable knowledge

and experience with the national contractor and

a number of local contractors he finally joined

Brymor in 2002.

Roger is now in his tenth year at Brymor where

he has fulfilled many different roles and achieved

many awards, including the CIOB Construction

Manager of the Year award in 2005 and Roger then

became a member of the Chartered Institute of

Building in January 2008.

With Rogers’ vast experience and expertise

Brymor’s management team thought that the

new position of senior planner would be perfect

for Roger to take on, and in August 2012 this was

announced.

Roger commented “I am looking forward

to taking on the challenge of this new role and

helping to take Brymor to the next level. I feel I

can bring valuable experience to this role and help

ensure our clients are receiving the best service

from Brymor, from pre-construction through to

completion”

Please join us in wishing Roger continued

success in his new role.

April 2012 saw our staff take part in another fundraising event to help raise money for Gemma Bentley, a student nurse who was

visiting Ghana as part of her studies to undertake a voluntary nurse placement. We thought it would make a great feature to share

Gemma’s experience so have fun reading her blog.

Gemma Bentley:Nursing Placement

in Ghana

My placement while I was in Ghana was on a male

surgical ward, it mainly involved; ward rounds with the doctors in the mornings, examining patients, dressing wounds, getting patients ready for surgery and taking them to theatre. I had the opportunity to follow a patient’s journey from beginning to end, taking them to theatre, during recovery and then back to the ward once stable. I was able to witness some interesting cases and I learnt so much from the surgeons. They were keen to teach us things we didn’t know as well as asking us questions of how their care differs from ours in the UK. It was nice to share information and sometimes see them try to put our methods into practice.

I also had the opportunity to visit the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) this was very interesting and again the doctors were very helpful and would take the time to explain what was wrong with the babies and how they were trying to treat them. I was lucky enough to help monitor a woman who was in labour, timing her contractions, listening and timing the baby’s heartbeat etc. I was also lucky enough to witness three births, one of which being twins which was a fantastic experience.

However one of my most worthwhile and educational days in Ghana was when I experienced life in the HIV clinic. This was fascinating, and was probably where I learnt the most about the problems they face in Ghana

and how they try to deal with HIV. This was also one of the only places I found they tried to provide holistic care, and they aimed to look after the patient physically, psychologically and socially. It was refreshing to see this as in the rest of the hospital they

only seem to use the medical model ‘find the problem and fix it’ attitude. However all the doctors I worked with seemed passionate and did their very best to deal with the patients in the best way they could with the resources they had.

The last week of my time in Ghana was spent

in the village of Abura. This was the highlight for me as it was very ‘hands on’, My duties at the clinic involved carrying out vital signs, examinations, participating in anti-natal education classes, baby weighing and immunisations as well as working with the medical assistant in his treatment room. I really got to know the

people and became apart of the community, I really

felt like I had made a difference.

Gemma commented:“I want to thank the staff at Brymor for helping me take part in this once in a lifetime experience. My nursing elective placement in Ghana was the best thing I have ever done. It was the most emotionally challenging yet the best experience of my life. I have seen things I never thought I would see, and experienced a life changing trip. I have fantastic memories that I will treasure, and have made some fantastic friends that I will keep forever.”

On the 8th July 2012, Carmen Morton and her best friend, Rebecca Cannings, ran the Race for Life in Southampton in memory of Rebecca’s mum, who sadly lost the battle with cancer last year.

On the day huge crowds gathered to watch a worthy charity event. The amount of support around the course was fantastic. Carmen has now made a pact that every year she and Rebecca will do something for the cancer research charity.

Carmen would like to thank everyone who sponsored her, which helped to raise an amazing £450 for the cancer research charity.

The in building for 25 years

Brymor site manager Dave Rich has recently taken part in a fundraising event to raise money for the KIDS charity which helps local disabled children and their families.

On Friday 27th July Dave abseiled 300ft down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and raised a fantastic £377 for his charity.

Dave summed up the experience as ‘truly fantastic’. He commented “I loved every minute of the experience, particularly walking out onto the platform at 300ft. I also managed to raise an extra £30 for having the courage to hang upside down at 200ft. It felt very strange but an experience I will never forget.”

Building his future in construction Daniel James joined Brymor in December 2010 as an assistant small works manager and quickly progressed within the division to become small works manager.

Prior to this he was an assistant site manager for another contractor where he achieved CIOB level 4 in site management.

Whilst at Brymor he has been studying a foundation degree in Science (Construction and Surveying) and we are pleased to announce that he has passed his three year course with an honourable distinction. He now has plans to continue his studies at Westminster University with the aim to achieve an honours degree in commercial management. From this success he will then achieve chartered status (MCIOB).

We want to congratulate Daniel on his achievements and hard work to date and wish him the best of luck for his future studies.

Anna’s Challenges are raising awareness and fundraising for children with Cystic Fibrosis

(CF) in the Basingstoke area and the CF team at North Hampshire Hospital. The charity thought it was time to transform the children’s assessment room into a room the children could really enjoy, and a room that will distract the children (and parents) from the reason they are attending hospital.

John Cleary, Brymor’s site manager, helped the staff to organise the painting of the assessment room and we were also pleased to be able to donate funds towards the overall cost.

To make the room really come to life, Emma Crick, the artist, painted a truly eye catching and remarkable mural.

Rachel Marke, trustee said: “I wanted to say thank you so much for your company’s help with the painting of the assessment room on the children’s ward at the Basingstoke and North Hants Hospital and your generosity and help with the cost of it. The mural has now been completed and it looks amazing. We’ve had such wonderful feedback and everyone was very impressed with the workmen from Brymor”.

Brymor were honoured to be involved in such a great project. A massive congratulations to the staff at Anna’s Challenges and good luck with all your future fundraising.

Brymor have been working

New Glenigan data shows that the construction industry has seen a 6% year on year increase in the underlying value of projects starting on site.

The in building for 25 years

Brymor’s brief was to design and build twelve independent flats with

updated facilities which in turn would create a stable, safe and independent living environment to support residents with learning disabilities. The project also involved the construction of four new houses which would be sold to help raise funds for the overall project.

This project demonstrated many challenges along the way including working within a small village environment with restricted access, conservation constraints and most importantly the need to meet programme deadlines to ensure the vulnerable residents were only in temporary accommodation for as long as absolutely necessary.

With all these aspects to the project, the proactive performance of our site manager was essential to the success of the scheme and lee Fletcher did not fail to deliver. lee showed great enthusiasm and dedication to the scheme and from the outset realised the key to managing this project was to ensure strong communication channels were in place between all parties as well as involving

the residents as much as possible in the design. Taking all these aspects into consideration Brymor, our client MCCH and lawson Queay thought that both the project and lee would make fantastic candidates for the Construction Manager of the Year Awards and we are pleased to announce that lee has made it through to the finals.

lee commented “I am honored to have been put forward for this award. I’m not sure why me; it’s what I do on every project and that is to try my best using the experience I have gained during my 25 years in construction. I aim to produce a high quality, fulfilling project, not only to meet but to exceed our client’s expectations.

“Despite the challenges we faced, I felt that everyone involved was overwhelmed by the end result and proud to be associated with the scheme; all without causing too much disturbance to the surrounding neighborhood and most importantly the residents of Byways.”

lee will be attending the Construction Manager of the Year Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel,

Park lane, london in November so we wish him the best

of luck!

November 2011 saw Brymor
