Login To make any changes to your site you need to be logged in. To log in to the back panel of the site you will need to type your domain name into the URL search bar followed by /wp-admin

An example of this would be http://www.your-site-name.co.uk/wp-admin - This will take you to the log in page.

You will then see an area to enter your username and password, enter the correct information into this area and click Log In.

DashboardOnce you have logged in, you will see the WordPress Dashboard, this is the main administration homepage. The header bar across the top of the page is known as the toolbar, this shows the name of your site and the user who is logged in (see screenshot below) – The header bar will show at the top of every page when logged in.

The dashboard can be customised slightly, the boxes which are displayed for example, “At a Glance” and “Activity” can be dragged and dropped into the order you prefer.

Dashboard Menu OptionsOn the left-hand side of the Dashboard you will see the main navigation menu.

PostsThis is where you can see your blog posts and create new blog posts.

MediaThis is where all your uploaded media such as images, documents and files are stored. You can browse through the media library, as well as edit and update the files – for example, image or document titles and descriptions.

FormsThis is where the forms on your site are stored, this shows each form, the form settings and how many entries the form has. If your site doesn’t have any forms then you will not see this section.

PagesThis is where you create and maintain all your pages.

CommentsYou can manage all your comments within this section including replying to the comments or marking them as spam. Most websites will not have comments so this area will usually not be needed.

AppearanceThis is where you control how your site looks. This section allows you to change the theme and manage your sites widgets and menus. This section shouldn’t be accessed much as this can easily mess up your site.

PluginsThis is where the plugins which are used on your site are found, plugins extend the functionality of WordPress. Plugins can be added or deleted and activated and deactivated within this section. This section shouldn’t

WordPress Training Manual be accessed as some Plugins can be harmful to your site, please get in touch with us if you want a plugin removing or adding.

UsersThis section lists the existing users for your site. You may be able to add new users and manage their roles, depending on your role.

ToolsThis section has various convenient tools and data can be imported and exported. This section shouldn’t be accessed as you will not need to edit any of the settings on your site.

Custom FieldsThis section allows us to add extra fields to specific pages to make the WordPress back panel more flexible. This section shouldn’t be accessed as you will not need to edit anything in this section.

ToolbarThe toolbar which is found at the top of the screen allows you to quickly access commonly used features.

The features which can be accessed from this toolbar are listed below. Visit the WordPress.org website, Codex or Support forums Display your site Dashboard – This can be done by hovering over

your site name and clicking “Dashboard” Add a new Post, Media, Page or User Perform a site search – By clicking the magnifying glass Edit the page that you are currently on View or edit your profile and logout from the WordPress Dashboard –

Adding and Editing PostsTo add or edit posts you should firstly go to the posts area on the left navigation list.

To edit a post, click the title or hover over the title and click the “Edit” underneath the title. To delete a post click the “Trash” option.To add a new post, click the button which says “Add New”.

The numbered areas labelled on the image above are explained below:

1) Title – This is the title of your post.

2) Add Media – This allows you to add media to the content box, this will show on the post.

3) Add Form – This allows you to add a form to the content box, this will show on the post.

4) Content Box – This is where you write the content which will be displayed on the post. (When pasting text into the box the “paste as text” function on the toolbar should always be on, this helps to stop the content from being formatted.)

5) Toolbar – This is the toolbar, the image below explains each function.

6) Save Draft – This allows you to save the post as a draft if it is not finished or you don’t want to publish it yet.

7) Publish Immediately – This allows you to change the date that the post is published, for example, you could change the date so it published 2 weeks ago or change it so that it will automatically publish in 2 weeks.

8) Categories – This allows you to add a category to your post, edit categories or add new categories.

9)Publish – This allows you to publish the post so that it will be displayed on your website.

10) Preview – This allows you to preview your post before you publish it.

Adding and Editing PagesTo add or edit pages you should firstly go to the Pages area on the left navigation list.

To edit a page, you should click the title of that page or hover over the page and click the “Edit” underneath the title of the page.

WordPress Training Manual 8) Featured Image – This allows you to add a featured image to your page however you will be informed which pages you can add featured images too.

9) Custom Fields Section – This is used to add more custom fields to your pages Making your site more flexible. These are usually shown below the main content box and they have titles and descriptions to show what each field is for.The image shows an example of some custom fields which have been added to this specific page.

10) Preview – This allows you to preview your page before you publish it.

11)Publish – This allows you to publish the page so that it will be displayed on your website.

MenuAdding Pages to your MenuSometimes you may add a new page to your site and you may want to add this to your main menu.

To do this however over the “Appearance” section on the left navigation list, then click “Menu”.

This will show you your current menu. To add pages to the menu, tick the box of the page(s) you want to add and then press “Add to Menu”. These pages will add to the menu, you can then drag and drop the pages to re-order them and add sub items. Sub items are shown as a drop down on the menu. “Save Menu” will then save your menu.Removing Pages from your MenuTo remove pages from your menu, click the small arrow to open more options for that page, then click “Remove”. When this is done, don’t forget to “Save Menu”

Editing your MenuYou can edit the names of pages on your menu, to do this click the small arrow to open for options for that page, then change the “Navigation Label”.

Adding MediaTo add media, first, go to the Media section on the left navigation list.

This will show you a list of the media already in your library, click the “Add New” to add new media. This will open a box, you can either drag and drop files you wish to upload or “Select files” and choose the specific files.This will then add the file into your library, click the file to open the

details.

It is important to make sure you add an accurate Title and Alt Text. Alt text stands for alternative text, it is needed for SEO purposes and is displayed when the browser can’t render the image. It’s also used by screen readers for visually impaired users. A description is optional however it is best to add one. Once you have finished, click the x in the top right, this will automatically save your changes.

Adding HTML LinksText HTML LinksYou can add HTML links to text, first, highlight the text you want to link then click the insert/edit link button on the toolbar.

Once you have clicked the insert/edit link it will open a box, you can either paste the URL into the box or click the cog for link options.

You can then enter the URL into the URL bar or choose a page from your site to link to, the search bar allows you to search for one of your specific pages. Ticking the “Open link in a new tab” will open the link in a new tab. Once finished click “Add Link”

Links will show in blue.

Media HTML LinksYou can also add links to media. First, add the media into the content box, once the image is in the content box click the image and then insert/edit link.

You can paste the URL into the bar or select the link options for more options.

You can then enter the URL into the URL bar or choose a page from your site to link to, the search bar allows you to search for one of your specific pages. Ticking the “Open link in a new tab” will open the link in a new tab. Once finished click “Add Link”

Removing and Editing HTML LinksTo remove a link, select the text link or the image which is linked, the bar will then show what this is linking too. Click the “Remove Link” button.

To edit a link, select the text link or the image which is linked, the bar will then show what this is linking too. Click the “Edit” button.
