From ourpatron My visit to the Crescent IslesIn June I was fortunate enough to have theopportunity to visit Lochac's newest lands,

and was utterly enchanted by the beautifulcountry, and the wonderful people who livethere. There was beauty everywhere Ilooked, in the lush fields, snow-coveredmountains and hot springs. When I attendedevents at Southron Gaard and Ildhafn, I tookspecial note of the works displayed by theartisans, and I was excited by the variety andquality of work that I saw.

My first event was La Vuelta de CristóbalColón a España- The Return of ChristopherColumbus to Spain. The hall was simplybeautiful, it had once been a chapel, I believe- 2 kitchens, and a field out the back for thePas d'Arms. Inside was an Arts and SciencesDisplay with literally dozens of spectacularitems on display. Shoes, blackwork, furniture, food, stone carvings, jewellery andunderwear The piece of Bayeux tapestry wasspectacular.I was simply awe-struck by MistressRowena's scroll. I wish I knew how to use

It was here that I had a great view of thefighting from the window of the Royal Roomabove. Being one of the Queen's ladies inwaiting has its privileges. Another Arts andSciences display and even greater diversity ofthe artisans was shown - brewing (or should Isay distilling - it's illegal to distil drinks inAustralia, so I thought Jardine's brandy wasgreat!), herbs, embroidery, arrow making, just to name a few. Beatrice did some beautiful wall hangingsI was amazed at the fantastic maps - I wassorry I could only take one photo.

I must say, this was a wonderful experienceto visit the newest groups to join Lochac, andfound the people to be warm and welcoming, the arts were a delight to behold, and I lookforward to the next visit I have in NewZealand. Thank you for your kind hospitalityand generosity. Viscontessa Lucrezia LorenzPatron of Painters & Limners Guild

Hints for working on panels;1. Before you start work on the panel, prepare it. Sand it as flat as you can, and wipeit down with a moist cloth. Let it dry.

2. If working with joined panels, make yourjoints from the same type of wood. Differentwoods have different expansion andcontraction rates. Woods used included oak(for the best work), pine (the inexpensivealternative), and others.

3. Acrylic gesso makes an excellent primerwhen working on a panel painting. It won't beseen and has its benefits. It seals the wood sothat you won't have problems with sap or

resin seeping through the paint. In the middleages gesso was used, but it was made fromplaster and white lead. (I've got the recipesomewhere) Use the gesso on the front andsides of the panel. Use a clear sealant on theback of the panel, so that the wood can beseen. Allow to dry thoroughly before paintingyour masterpiece.

4. Frame the work appropriately. If it isn't ina frame or stand (alterpieces, etc), then it isn'tfinished.

(my painter’sbible).HOW TO MAKE VARIOUS SORTS OFBLACK.“There is a black which is a soft, blackstone.... then there is a black which is madefrom vine twigs; these twigs are to be burnedand when they are burnt, throw water onthem, and quench them; and then work themup like the other black...

There is a black which is made from burntalmond shells or peach stones, and this is aperfect black, and fine...There is another black which is made in thismanner: take a lamp full of linseed oil, andfill the lamp with this oil, and light the lamp. Then put it, so lighted, underneath a goodclean baking dish, and have the little flameof the lamp come about to the bottom of thedish, two or three fingers away, and thesmoke which comes out of the flame willstrike on the bottom of the dish, andcondense in a mass. Wait for a while,; takethe baking dish, and with some implementsweet this color, that is, this soot, off onto apaper, on into some dish; and it does nothave to be worked up or ground, for it is avery fine color. Refill the lamp with the oil inthis way several times, and put it back underthe dish; and make as much of it in this wayas you need.
