Abstract: Collection includes genealogical materials relating to the earliest members of theMorgan family in Massachusetts. The collection also contains more detailed information aboutMorgan family members who resided in Worcester (Charles Hill Morgan (1831 - 1911), PaulBeagary Morgan (1869 - 1952), Philip Maynard Morgan (1896 - 1965), Peter Shepard Morgan(1924 - 2016) and Paul Shepard Morgan (1923 - 2012). Materials within these series includecorrespondences, day journals, photographs, citations, articles about and obituaries. Of specialnote of joumal and letters of Philip Maynard Morgan while serving overseas in WWI and PeterS. Morgan who served overseas during WWII. Also included is a series of photographs,correspondences and drawings regarding the Morgan Farm in Hubbardston, Massachusetts.

H i s t o r i c a l / B i o g r a p h i c a l N o t e s

Miles Morgan, one of the founders of Springfield, MA came to this country in 1636 fromWales. He was bom in 1615. He married first Prudence Gilbert and second Eliza Bliss. For

complete genealogy of early family, please see box 1 of collection.Charles Hill Morgan was bom January 8,1831 in Rochester, NY son of Hiram and

Clarissa (Rich) Morgan. He started working at the age of 12 and at 15 became an apprentice tohis uncle J.B. Parker of Clinton, MA. He took it upon himself to leam mechanical drawing andat the age of 21, he was put in charge of the Clinton Mills Dye-House. In 1860, he joined hisbrother, (Francis Henry Morgan) in Philadelphia in the manufacturing of paper bags. He came toWorcester in 1864 when Ichabod Washbum was in need of a superintendent for his wire worksfinally resigning in 1887. In 1881, he founded Morgan Spring Company. He married first.Harries Plympton (1831 - 1862) of Shrewsbury and they had one son, Charles Henry Morgan.He married second, Rebecca A. Beagary. Their children were Harriet W. (Mitchell), CharlotteN. (McFadden), Paul B. Morgan and Ralph L. Morgan. Charles Hill Morgan died in 1911.

Paul Beagary Morgan was bom in Worcester, May 7, 1869 son of Charles Hill andRebecca Ann (Beagary) Morgan. He graduated from Worcester Academy in 1887 and WPI in1890. He succeeded his father as President of Morgan Constmction Company and was Presidentof Heald Machine Company. He married, June 15,1893 Lessie Louise Maynard daughter ofWilliam and Mary (Adams) Maynard of Worcester. Their children were Philip Maynard (b.April 13,1896), Charles Hill (b. September 19,1902), Paul Beagary Jr. (b. June 11,1904),Vincent (b. Febmary 2,1906) and Elizabeth (b. July 2,1909). Paul B. Morgan died inNovember, 1952.

Philip Maynard Morgan was bom in Worcester April 13,1869 the son of Paul B. andLessie L. (Maynard) Morgan. He graduated from Bancroft School and them from WorcesterAcademy in 1914. He then entered Harvard University but left in July 1917 to join the armyduring WWI. He was a member of the First Field Artillery, Massachusetts National Guard. Hewas severely burned during a mustard gas attack on July 16,1918 and remained hospitalizeduntil March 1919. After he release, he completed his courses and graduated from Harvard. Hewas named assistant purchasing agent at Morgan Constmction in 1920. After several years inand out of Morgan he became treasurer from 1927 to 1940 and 1942 - 1945. He marriedMaijorie B. (Shepard) Morgan and had two sons, Paul S. Morgan and Peter S. Morgan. Philip MMorgan died November 19,1965.

Paul Shepard Morgan was bom in 1923. He was a graduate of Bancroft School inWorcester and the Govemor's Academy, South Byfield, MA and Harvard University. Hereceived his honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering from WPI in 1995. Upon graduating fromHarvard in 1944, he served as an officer with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. He joined MorganConstmction in 1947. He was twice elected to Worcester City Council (1953 - 1957) and itsCharter Commission in 1983. He was married to Aime (Nancy) Murray Morgan and theirchildren Philip R., Daniel M., Margaret M. Grasselli and Aime C. Morgan.

Peter Shepard Morgan was bom in 1924. Peter attended Bancroft School in Worcesterand spent most of his summers on his grandfather's farm in Hubbardston, MA. He attendedGovemor Dummer Academy in Byfield, MA. He served in the Army during World War II. Hebegan working at American Steel and Wire and then spent the next 40 years at MorganConstmction Company. He then spent ten years as a motor coach operator with Fox Bus Lines.He marries Jerry Morgan on June 7, 1947. Their children are Peter, Merrill (Merry) Hill, Gail,Carol and Jane. Peter died on June 16,2016.

Collection includes genealogical materials relating to the earliest members of the Morgan familyin Massachusetts. The collection also contains more detailed information about Morgan familymembers who resided in Worcester (Charles Hill Morgan (1831-1911), Paul Beagary Morgan(1869 - 1952), Philip Maynard Morgan (1896 - 1965), Peter Shepard Morgan (1924 - 2016) andPaul Shepard Morgan (1923 - 2012).
