“For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“God never does anything for us without great preparation”.

These are the words of Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen. The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ, or Christmas, proves this. Jesus coming as man, to ultimately be our Lord and Savior, is not a random act or a snap decision on God’s part. It was yet another part of

God’s great work. After creating heaven and earth, forming man and woman in His image, promising His fidelity after

the fall in the garden, binding Himself to His people through covenants, and calling to people through the prophets, He finally came to reveal Himself as Emmanuel, “God with us”.

As we know, the twelve days Christmas come after the four weeks of Advent, which is a time when we prepare for the birth of Jesus. Preparation is an attribute practiced by God and practiced in God’s Church. All of this preparation is directed to a specific end: Joy eternal with God. Our Lord’s coming in the flesh begins a great work of transformation and healing in the world.

Archbishop Sheen writes, “The Christmas gift of peace was the uncoiling of the links of a triple chain that first unites a person with God, then with himself, then with his neighbor.” Christmas, and the holy birth we celebrate,

cannot be reduced to passing sentiments and catchy carols. This commemoration is directed to the healing and transfor-mation of all creation, and most specifically you and me.

Dear brothers and sisters, this Christmas let us commit ourselves to a deepening relationship with God. His love will change us, and then change our relationships. These changes will impact our world in ever increasing ways. To build the kingdom of God takes preparation, commitment and execu-tion. It is all for naught if we are not first bound together in Godly charity. May the links of Divine Love bind us ever more to Him and to our neighbors.

Blessings and peace be with you, Fr. Justin Brady
