From Principal…….
Please note that there will not be a BREAKFAST program this FRIDAY.
This week we have installed two new air conditioners into room 2 and room 5. The
children have enjoyed the new warmer rooms today. This was possible through
our schools successful energy grant. We have also replaced all the older plastic
tables in the grade 2/3 rooms. The new “ocean mist” and “green grass” tables
look fabulous. Our school improvements are made
possible through the hard work of fundraising with
our community.
I would like to thank all community members who
donate time, money and energy to our school
efforts.
Our Leap into Learning Program started yesterday,
with 27 pre-prep children attending the program.
Congratulations to Lynne Carter and Chris Blundell
on a great first session for the children. This program has
state-wide recognition for the wonderful start it gives
children who are commencing school. We are taking
further enrolments for 2015, and anyone interested
should contact the office to organise a school tour.
It is really important as a school community that we plan
for the learning that will enable our children to best the best adults that they can
be. To help discover some of our community views at our recent school council
meeting, I posed the following to the group. This was;
when my child/ren leave Wonthaggi Primary School, I would like them to be….
Each member of the group gave their views of what was important for their child.
They group brainstormed some of the following ideas.
Resilient, adaptable, risk-taker, enjoy and love learning, confident, kind,
considerate, organised, literate and numerate, healthy.
As a parent/carer/grandparent it might be good to think about what is most
important for your child and what experiences might you provide for them to
enable them to achieve what is most important in your family. I would
encourage you to continue to work in partnership with your child’s teacher to
ensure that your child’s learning (academic, social and emotional) continues to
grow and develop.
Wonthaggi A-THONs
To help celebrate literacy and numeracy week during August we are running two
events. The first event is the Math-A-Thon which is a Student Representative
Council (SRC) event. The children can practice problems and in the week of 25th
to 31st August, each child will participate in a two minute challenge. They can
access the website for practice prior to the running of the challenge
www.smartkiddies.com.au. All children will be involved in the challenge,
regardless of sponsorship for this event.
The second event is a Parent’s Club event, and is a Read-A–Thon. This is slightly
different in nature as the children will be eligible for prizes from the company
running the event. Approximately 70% of the money raised goes directly to the
school.
We continue to encourage all children to participate in one or both events.
Good luck to our Grade 5/6 basketball team that are competing this Friday.

Students from every year level have now committed three songs in other languages to memory! This is an
incredible achievement, and one which we aim to continue building on. (Languages so far are Zulu, Italian
and Spanish).
This week we also focused on learning instrumental parts for our Italian song, memorizing notes on
keyboard, glockenspiel and boom whackers.
Thanks once again, to Celina Roberts for sharing information about Denmark and teaching another grade
Incy Wincy Spider in Danish. We are yet to commit this one to memory!
