STATISTICAL COMPARISONS 5Things to Watch

- Nicola Mathews is first in the Sun Belt shooting 54.2 percent (13-24) from beyond the arc coming off the bench. App is 3-0 this season when she hits multiple 3-pointers. Watch if she can continue to give App a spark.

- App State performed better at the line going 15-of-21 against Wofford. The Mountaineers are 5-2 this season when attempting at least 20 foul shots. See if App can get to the line against the Tigers.

- After scoring 28 points against Wofford, Madi Story is averaging 16.3 points on 45.8 percent shooting from the floor, 36.8 percent from beyond the arc and 88.5 percent from the free throw line. She’s scored at least 20 points in two of those games. Expect Story to continue her solid play.

- In five of the Apps’ six wins, they have held their opponents to an average of 6.3 rebounds less than their season average. Clemson is 43rd in the country in rebounds per game at 42.3 App has won the battle on the glass in eight of out of 10 contests. Watch if the Black and Gold can continue its success on the boards.

- With the Tigers being one of the top teams in the nation in picking up steals, see if the Mountaineers can protect the ball. App is committing just 13.3 turnovers over the last three games (16.2 overall).

By the Numbers

1.13 App State’s 1.13 points per

possession in its most recent victory on Monday was a season

best.

13 After securing 13 boards against Wofford, Bayley Plummer is 13th

all-time in career rebounds.

25Madi Story became the 25th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point club

after scoring 28 points against Wofford.

94The 94 points against the

Terriers on Monday are the most since 2015-16 when App scored 96 at Troy and the most scored

at home since 2010 when Appalachian scored 99 against

UNC Asheville.

An App State Win Would • Improve its record to 7-4 and move to 2-4 on the road.

• Tie for the most non-conference wins since 2012-13 and record the most non-conference victories since 2011-12.

• Notch its first Power Five victory since defeating NC State in the WNIT in 2012.

• Pull to within one win from matching last season’s win total. • Improve to 2-5 against Clemson in the all-time series. An App State Loss Would• Finish 6-5 in in non-conference play.

• Fall to 1-5 on the road.

• Drop to 1-6 all-time against Clemson.

Depth Across the Board• Appalachian returns all 12 players from last season’s 8-23 squad including all five starters.

• Among those returning are the two leading scorers in Pre Stanley (11.4 ppg) and Tierra Wilson (10.5 ppg).

• Bayley Plummer is back for her junior season after posting a breakout sophomore campaign.

• Plummer led the Sun Belt, the team and was 13th in the nation averaging 11.5 rebounds per game.

• The junior posted 355 rebounds, which surpassed Valorie Whiteside’s sophomore record of 328 rebounds and was the second highest mark in a single season in program history

• Plummer also was tied in the league with 13 double-doubles

• Of those returning, Madi Story is back after a torn ACL and UCF transfer Ashley Polacek, who sat out due to NCAA transfer rules.

• Story led the team in scoring (13.3 ppg), rebounding (6.9 rpg) and 3-pointers with 38.

• All three numbers were career highs and she was the only player in the Sun Belt to lead her team in all three categories.

• Nicola Mathews led the team last season in assists at 3.0 per game, while Lainey Gosnell proved to be a spark off the bench, pouring in 7.7 points per game.

Closer Look: Guards• The guard position might be at its deepest in coach Elderkin’s five seasons.

• Returning guards include Wilson, Mathews, Stanley, Polacek, Story and Kaila Craven.

• All six are capable of doing damage from beyond the arc.

• Wilson led the team in 3-pointers made with

56, which was the highest mark for a leader since the 2010-11 campaign. • Mathews was 11th in the Sun Belt in assists and was one of three players to rank in the top 11 in assists and hit at least 35 3-pointers.

• Craven is a sharpshooter that can score in a flury. She led the team in 3-pointers her freshman season with 41 trifectas. She missed the next year with a torn ACL, and played in 10 games with a pair of double-digit performances.

Closer Look: Frontcourt• Along with Plummer and Gosnell, Armani Hampton, Maya Calder, Dominique Jeffery are back to make up the front court.

• Calder was one of the more effective players down low, as she was third on the team in rebounding coming off the bench.

• The sophomore was seventh in the Sun Belt averaging 17.4 rebounds per 40 minutes.

• Hampton started in a career-high 31 games and pulled down 4.0 rebounds per contest.

• Gosnell led the team in scoring coming off the bench and was tied for second in 3-pointers with 38.

• Jeffery would add depth to the position, but is capable of scoring inside with her moves and can rebound.

Newcomers • Appalachian brought in four freshmen in Brooke Bigott, A’Lea Gilbert, Emma Newton, and Haile McDonald.

• Bigott is a slashing guard from Texas that can shoot or get to the paint to distribute to other teammates.

• Gilbert is a bruising forward from Charlotte that can mix it up in the paint and get her buckets from her post moves.

• McDonald, from Virginia, is able to play from inside or her out and can get physical on the glass.

• Newton was a late addition from Asheville. the freshman crashes the glass and can hit the long ball.

’S BASKETBALL

The Fifth Chapter• After tearing her ACL to miss the 2017-18 season, Madi Story is back and ready to go.

• Story is on pace to put her name in the record books, as she is on pace to become the 25th member of the 1,000-point club.

• Through her sophomore and junior seasons, Story averaged 12.6 points per game including a career and team-high 13.3 points per game in ‘16-1.

• The Maiden, N.C., native is on pace to finish with 1,265 points, which would put her in 12th all-time in scoring.

• In addition, she is on pace to finish just outside of the top 20 in rebounds, top 10 in assists and ninth in 3-pointers.

License and Registration Please• Not only is Plummer successful crashing the glass and recording double-doubles, but she is also participating in App State’s Police Academy.

• Currently, Plummer is taking part in campus security during the week when the team doesn’t practice.

• There are just two University police academies in the nation with Indiana and App State.

• Plummer would like to work with the State Patrol when she graduates.

International Flavor• Head coach Angel Elderkin in the past two seasons has signed three international players from three separate countries.

• Nicola Mathews is from Australia, while Ashley Polacek hails from Canada and Anna Perez Gomez resides from Spain.

• Perez Gomez was the first international student-athlete coach Elderkin signed.

2019 Signing Class• App State recently signed Jackie Christ to the 2019 Signing Class.

• Christ is the first signee from Sterling, Va.

• The future Mountaineer is a 6’2 forward and is averaging a double-double at over 20 points and 10 rebounds per contest.

• She is an all-conference selection and a 4A Second-Team All-State selection.

• Appalachian’s second NLI was received on Saturday by Spanish wing, Nora Galve.

• Galve is a 5’11 wing that participated in the U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup with Spain.

• Galve is the fourth international player head coach Angel Elderkin has signed.

• Anna Perez Gomez (Spain), Nicola Mathews (Australia), and Ashley Polacek

(Spain) are the current international Mountaineers on the team.

Bench Mob • Through the first 10 games of the season, Appalachian’s reserves are turning in 23.2 points per game, which is 33.6 percent of the Apps’ scoring output.

• In the Mountaineers’ six wins this season, the reserves are outscoring their opponents’ bench by an average score of 27.2-11.2.

• Against Davidson, the Mountaineers scored a staggering 46 points, posting a 38-point advantage over the Wildcats’ bench.

• The bench has also hit majority of the 3-pointers with 32 of the 60 trifectas thus far being converted by the reserves.

• Tierra Wilson (19 3’s) and Nicola Mathews (13 3’s) have combined for 32 3-pointers. Combined, they are 32-78 (41.2%) from beyond the arc. The rest of the team is just 28-141 (19.8%).

• App State’s bench has scored at least 20 points in six of the past seven games.

• It’s the best 10-game start since 2012-13 when the Black and Gold started 7-3.
