Speak Up!

Unit OverviewThrough this unit students will critically explore the representation of women in the modern world with a particular focus on the role the media plays in shaping attitudes towards women and girls. They will consider the necessity for women to speak up against such limiting representations which place them in a subordinate social position. Further to this students will examine how women and girls are calling for change through speaking up on issues including:

- environmental sustainability- lack of access to education - gender inequality- entrenched misogyny

- a lack of political and economic agency

Through their study of this unit students will question, challenge and evaluate cultural assumptions in texts and their effects on meaning, enabling them to find their own voice in order to speak up in response to the issues which affect women and girls in the modern world. Throughout this unit students will also develop their ability to express their ideas and opinions in persuasive form.

face today. Once you have completed your mind map create a second one detailing

the role the media plays in representing these issues.
