Imagination And Communication:

Where do ideas come from, and when you have them, how do you help other people see how valuable they are? It’s been said

everyone has at least one billion-dollar idea at some point in our lives. the trick is selling that idea. Successful entrepreneurs know the key is communication. You can have the best idea in the world but if you can’t ex-press it, it’s just an idea.

This issue of Women In Business & In-dustry will show you how to come up with new ideas for businesses; develop written communications to express those ideas; and introduce you to metropolitan West’s Ceo,

kelly taylor, seen above, who has an altogether grasp on both of those concepts.more people than ever are looking for new jobs; whether from a layoff, the desire to start

a new career path, or simply to make more money. because of this, the job market is more saturated than ever before. it truly is an employer’s market. Therefore, it is key to arm your-self with as many advantages as possible. There are 12 key mistakes nearly every job hunter makes. We’ll show you what they are, and how to avoid them.

american express open recently conducted a survey based on the u.s. Census to determine the status of women-owned businesses in the united states. it found—among other things—women-owned businesses are among the leaders in new job creation in this country. The overall findings are very encouraging, both for women considering starting new businesses as well as those looking for employment.

on a similar topic, the national association of Female executives (naFe) recently pub-lished its list of the top 50 companies for executive women. We’ll tell you what companies those are, and give you a brief overview of how they were selected. one thing they all have in common; specific programs designed to help women executives succeed.

This is exactly what we do in every issue of Women In Business & Industry. We strongly believe if you can imagine it, you can do it. and, the better you get at telling people about what you can do—the more rapidly you will succeed.

imagination is where it all begins; communication is how you get it there.

Whether you’re requesting funds for a research project, a loan for a business venture, or writing a cover letter, resume, or abstract, you’ll want to write with confidence and conviction.

to craft a strong written message, barnard and st. James recommend asking four questions before starting any writ-ten communication:• Is it reader based? ask yourself who are my readers?

are they colleagues or people outside my field? What do they know? What do they need to know? how can i best present the material to these readers? knowing who your reader is will help you decide what words to use and exactly how much detail is needed.

• Is it purposeful? your second question should be; Why am i writing this? today we live in an over-communicated society: emails, text messages, tweets, ads, letters, newspa-pers, magazines, books. in fact, most of what we write no one reads. make sure every word is useful and relevant to every one of your intended readers.

• Is it clear and concise? generally, the cause of unclear writing is too many words. many writers will read a long, rambling sentence they’ve written, and to clarify it they’ll

write another long, rambling sentence to clarify the first one. big mistake. if a sentence is unclear, take words out. be wary of long sentences, unclear antecedents, poor tran-sitions, jargon, clichés, and an alphabet soup of acronyms.

• Is it correct? nothing puts the kibosh on a grant applica-tion, business plan, or resume faster than grammatical, punctuation, or spelling errors. Choose a good dictionary and a reputable style guide for your trade or industry and use it consistently. a style guide is a good investment that will answer questions on grammar, punctuation, and word usage. it will help you appear polished, professional, and well-educated.

Finally, st James and barnard suggest two final tips to improve your writing:

• Read more: you’ll increase your vocabulary and see how other writers craft sentences and argue points to make those points more effective. good choices for reading ma-terial: general non-fiction, scholarly journals, and award-winning books specific to your trade.

• Practice: Writing is a skill. The more you do it, using the suggestions above, the better you will become. WIBI

Entrepreneurship can be a rewarding career path – you set your own hours, do something you love and answer only to yourself – but it also comes with many challenges. deciding what kind of business to begin is the first obstacle.

VentureTipsBusiness

“generating business ideas is a must for any business venture,” says John J. liptak, ed.D., in his new book Entrepreneurship Quizzes (see page 26). “in order to generate ideas for your business, you need to be observant, creative and knowledgeable. you can find business ideas in all sorts of places.”

to brainstorm ideas about products or services that may be profitable, consider liptak’s following tips:

• The yellow pages can be an excellent source of ideas for your business. Use it to identify existing businesses in your area that are similar to one you might like to start.

how can your business be different from an existing one?• Magazines and books related to your interests can be chock full of

business ideas. pick up any magazine and look through it. What ideas jump out at you?• The Internet is full of great ideas. You can simply do a Google

search for franchises, for example, and you will get a plethora of new ideas. search for Websites related to your interests. What interesting ideas do you find?• Read and study as much as you possibly can about your

product or service. go to the local library or bookstore and simply browse. What topics catch your eye?

• Observe what is going on around you. Go to the mall or some other public place. Watch people and notice the

trends that you see. What products are people using? how do they dress? is there a product or service that is essential?• Think creatively about existing products you or your friends use. are there ways to combine two existing products into one of your own? What is

available but is too expensive to be practical? Can you do it for less money? What are the technology (service,

educational and so on) needs of the future?• Think creatively about the needs of various groups of people. What do

babies need? What are the needs of teenagers? is there a product that parents could use? how can you improve life for the elderly?

“Constantly think about new ideas and new ways of doing things,” liptak says. “Think about what is needed in your town or commu-nity. you should also think about things that could be improved or a service that could be provided in a better way. keep a running list of business ideas in a small notebook that you carry with you.”

additional tips can be found in Entrepreneurship Quizzes. The book was published in april 2012, and is available at major book-stores, amazon.com and jist.com. WIBI

among the most notable findings: • Between 1997 and 2012, when the number of businesses

in the United States increased by 37 percent, the number of women-owned firms increased by 54 percent, a rate 1.5 times the national average. The number of women-owned companies has risen by 200,000 within the past year, equivalent to just under 550 new women-owned firms per day.

• Women-owned firms are just as likely as all firms to gener-ate in excess of half a million dollars in revenues annu-ally in two industries: construction, where 13 percent of women-owned firms and 11percent of all construction

firms are pulling in more than $500,000 per year; and in transportation and warehousing, where six percent of each are generating $500,000 or more in revenues; • Women-owned firms are exceeding overall sector growth rates in seven of the 13 most populous (larg-est by number of businesses) industries: wholesale trade; finance and insurance; other services; real estate; health care and social assistance; construc-tion and arts/entertainment/recreation;

“even as women-owned firms continue to grow in number at rates exceeding the national

average, enterprises at the $250,000 to $499,999 revenue mark are at a turning point in their development,” says su-san sobbott, president of american express open.

12The BiggestJob Hunting

Mistakes1. Having a bad attitude. interviewing while still angry

at a former employer. being, acting, or thinking negative. The problem with negative people is that they seldom realize how terribly negative they really are. They may have good business skills, but they stay unemployed a long time and can’t figure out why.

2. Thinking “something will come along.” Waiting for something to happen. as a rule, good things don’t “just hap-pen.” successful people make them happen. effort usually equals results. as a rule, the harder you work at a job search, the sooner it ends.

3. Thinking someone else will find me a job: a recruiter, a counselor, my neighbor, my employer, my spouse, my pastor—anyone. even with counseling and support, this is really a “do-it-yourself ” project.

4. Thinking they’re more marketable than they are. Declining job offers that pay less than the last job or are somehow inferior. it’s often best to accept a weaker offer and leverage up from there. it’s called “kicking a career field goal.”

5. Taking rejection personally. The best way to cope with rejection is to have so many balls in the air that one loss doesn’t matter much. having your entire future riding on one potential offer is clearly a red flag.

6. Acting desperate. you may feel desperate. Just don’t let them see you sweat.

7. Shooting too high (or too low). it’s essential to know

where you’re marketable. you learn that through network-ing, and by asking others where they think you’re competi-tive. ask college professors, experts in the field, and espe-cially those in jobs similar to the ones you want.

8. Looking for “a job” rather than for a good fit where you’ll be happy. sometimes it’s necessary to take the first job that comes along. most of the time, it’s not. Whenever possible, hold out for the right fit.

9. Launching a job campaign before you know who you are and what you want to do. (The cart before the horse.) This is like building a custom home without a blueprint. usually, the result is a short-term fix. Then you’re back in the job market.

10. Asking for “a job” instead of asking for advice, ideas, and referrals. business contacts-especially strangers--are generally willing to point you in the right direction, but they dislike being asked directly for a job, because they’re uncomfortable turning you down.

11. Not preparing for interviews. your competitors will be prepared. They will have rehearsed the answers to dif-ficult interview questions—sometimes even on videotape. Why shouldn’t you? also, don’t interview half-heartedly. go for the job offer. you can always turn it down later.

12. Hard-selling. Coming on too strong. pushing people to give you names. sometimes called nFl networking. hard selling creates bad feelings about you and is actually counter-productive. WIBI

I f you’ve been employed for a while and circumstances have you suddenly looking for a new job, you’re going to find you’re entering a difficult, overcrowded job market. KellyTaylorControlling Elements—With Style

Metropolitan West’s

WRITTEN BY CHERI CREIGHTON

Southern california native Kelly taylor has carved out a design niche for herself in the construction market, building one of the largest women-owned companies in the Los angeles area.taylor is founder and cEo of Metropolitan West, a leading provider and installer of decorative glass films, interior graphics and solar control window film. Working closely with her staff of 12, she oversees all projects from conception to installa-

tion, bringing to life the architectural visions of her clients on a grand scale. She takes time out of her busy schedule to discuss her beginnings, what she loves most about her days and the wisdom she’s gained after more than 20 years as a contractor.

19

20

How did you get started?Coming from a family with many members in construc-

tion, my first instinct was to branch out into something different, so i became an event planner at universal studios. after a few years i began to burn out. you need to have a lot of passion for a job requiring long hours, and i felt that element was missing for me in event planning. i wasn’t sure what direction to take next, so i took a job at my mother’s construction firm, doing anything that needed to be done.i knew the job was only temporary until i figured out what i wanted to do, but after a while i felt my construction roots kicking in. i realized i had a knack for project management and the day-to-day activities needed to run a company. i also became aware of the ample opportuni-ties for women in construction, as new laws were requiring general contractors to hire more firms owned by women and other minorities.

Working in los angeles, i saw a great need for anti-graffiti products for businesses – especially in the downtown area – so i decided to break out on my own and offer anti-graffiti coatings for these buildings. i realized quickly windows were more vulnerable than walls. With glass, you get vandalism in the form of etching and smashing. so, i began to provide safety and anti-graffiti films for windows instead. The los angeles riots surrounding the rodney king trial in early 1992 brought my first big break. We got a call from Thrifty,

a large chain of drug stores, requesting safety films for 71 of their los angeles retail locations. shortly after, another re-quest came for an additional 132 locations, which propelled metropolitan West into becoming a large-scale contrac-tor. We now work with well-known architects on projects nationwide.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

over the years we’ve also added decorative glass films and wall graphics. i really enjoy interior design and these films are really fun to produce. i love beginning with an idea and turning it into a large adhesive that covers a room full of walls or glass. The designs really become the focal point of these spaces and you can’t help but stop and catch your breath when you see them installed for the first time. i also get a great deal of gratification from helping busi-nesses become more environmentally friendly though our solar window film installations. Did you know buildings are responsible for 39 percent of the total CO2 emissions in the atmosphere? by installing solar window films, a struc-ture can reduce its energy usage by up to 30 percent just by decreasing the amount of heat passing through windows. That’s a big savings, with a dramatic impact on the environ-ment. i feel good knowing we play a role in this impact.

21

You can question yourself to get more clarity from time to time, but don’t second-guess what your gut is telling you.

What does a typical day look like for you?if i’m in the office, you’ll find me working with the pro-

duction department, matching colors, overseeing patterns emerging from our printers, and carefully reviewing the films to make sure they are perfect before they go out to our installers. We have four plotters and large-scale printers. i affectionately named them stinky, Zippy, goldie and ro-landa. We spend a lot of time together and each has its own personality befitting its name. When i’m not in the office, i’m out in the field with architects and clients, helping them find the right film products. a huge part of my job is really listening to the client and finding the right solutions to bring their vision to life.

What advice would you give to other women business owners?

First and foremost, always follow your instincts! you can question yourself to get more clarity from time to time, but don’t second-guess what your gut is telling you. Women have powerful intuition, which can be a huge asset when

running a company—or at any level where you need to make decisions. When i’ve gone against my instincts for whatever reason, i’ve always regretted it. now it serves as my compass.

secondly, i would say take good care of the people work-ing for you. There was a time in my life when i couldn’t af-ford to feed myself and i remember how hard it was to focus on anything else. you have to make sure people are com-pensated enough to take care of all their needs before you can expect them to put in the focus necessary to produce outstanding work. When we first started out, i worked as a cocktail waitress in the evenings and didn’t take a salary for myself so i could take care of payroll first. i’m really glad i did, because my employees played a huge role in developing the reputation of metropolitan West. you can’t grow or run a large company all by yourself. The people i work with are just as important to the success of this company as i am.

What do you do in your spare time?i live on the water and i love doing all things ocean

related, like sailing and scuba div-ing. i also love hanging out with my australian shepherd, sage, and tending to my roof top gar-den. right now we have tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, chives, herbs and blueberries. sage actually has one tomato plant of her own that she can eat from. gardening is relaxing and refreshing, and it’s rewarding to see how plants grow into something we can put on the table. i also create baskets with what i harvest and photograph them. nature creates some of the most beautiful designs! CAREER AND BUSINESS NEWSAnother four percent of companies planned to give smaller bonuses than a year ago, which the same percentage who said as much in the 2008 survey.“Companies are not quite ready to ramp up hiring, but they are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. While most can probably justify postponing bonuses another year, there are growing concerns that job market improvements in 2010 could bring an exodus of workers. Companies are also sending a message that we appreciate that this has been a tough year for everyone, and that the workers’ part in ensuring continued survival is recognized,” said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Many employers are indeed expecting a rapid surge in turnover when the economy improves, according to a survey by consultancy firm Deloitte. The survey found that nearly two-thirds of managers were highly or very highly concerned about losing high-potential talent in the year after the recession ended.

“In addition to layoffs, the recession forced many employers to decrease workers’ hours, institute pay cuts, force employees to take unpaid vacations and halt matching 401(k) contributions. While some of these measures have saved jobs, they undoubtedly

left many workers disgruntled, frustrated and ready to move on as soon as the market improves. Year-end bonuses may not ensure the loyalty of all unhappy workers, but they could help entice some to stay aboard,” said Challenger.

While the human resource executives surveyed did not provide details on the amount of bonus checks, John Challenger said some companies may choose to be creative when it comes to year-end rewards. “In some respects, it truly is the thought that counts. Employees want to be recognized for their contribution to the company. It doesn’t have to be a Wall Street sized bonus check. Many workers would be happy with a $100 gift certificate to a local restaurant or store. Many would probably be happy with a couple of extra days of paid vacation at the end of the year. Many are simply happy to have a job in this economy,” said Challenger.

“Of course, those who are just happy to have a job are usually the first ones seeking greener pastures at the first sign of improvement. Companies understand this and it is why nearly two-thirds of them are finding a way to give bonuses this year,” he concluded. HT

Is Fear of Technology Holding Your Business Back?

Rieva Recommends

D id you rush out and wait in line overnight to buy the new iPad? or are you still us-ing a flip phone and doing your accounting on paper? Somewhere between the extremes of “very early adopter” and “complete Luddite” lies the ideal attitude for

entrepreneurs to have toward technology. In short, you should embrace it without falling for fads.

BY RIEVA LESONSKY

The growth of tablet sales over the past few months has proven that ipads aren’t a fad. every day, consumers and big businesses are turning to tools like smartphones and tablet computers to make their lives easier. is your business doing the same?

Consider these interesting ways entrepreneurs are using tablets in their businesses:• Making sales: salespeople in the field find it easier to whip

out an ipad on the go than a bulky laptop to quickly show a prospect product information, photos or even a sales presentation. plus, there’s still an “ooh” factor associated with an ipad that makes customers eager to take a look.

• Capturing information: Forget the clipboard—you can use ipads to collect customer information in waiting rooms, restaurants, gyms or just about anywhere that your clients need to “check in.” Then you’ve got the data digitized where it can easily be stored, saved and shared.

• Entertainment: nail salons, hair salons and restaurants are among the businesses using ipads to entertain customers during down times such as while they’re under the dryer or while waiting for their meals. instead of getting bored and antsy, customers linger longer and spend more money.

• Taking orders: some restaurants are using ipads instead of note pads for servers to take orders. others are even let-ting customers place their own orders via ipads at tables. The devices hold more data than your average menu, so servers can access things like nutritional information and

customers can page through mouthwatering photos.how could you use an ipad in your business? how could

smartphones drive more orders for your website? how could upgrading your computers save you time and money? Whether you own a dog grooming shop or a management consulting firm, these are the kinds of questions you need to be asking yourself today. technology is changing fast, and those who don’t change with it will be left behind. If you are tired of waiting for a good job to become available, you might be interested in ex-ploring entrepreneurship, which can be a lucrative alternative to traditional employment. those who are wondering whether they are ready to launch their own business or who are looking for guidance in the start-up process will find a wealth of advice in Entrepreneurship Quizzes, a new book by one of the nation’s leading developers of career assessments.

Step by step advice on having a successful interview to get the job you want. Includes information on: interview preparation and conduct, answering questions, questions to ask, what to wear, mistakes to avoid, career choices, plus much more. contains lots of tips. Written in an easily understood manner, the information presented has been used by thousands of people to get jobs. William E. Mcclintic, the au-thor, has a strong background in the “world of work” including proven, successful job search techniques.

Even the best ideas have little value if they are not explained clearly, concisely, and convincingly to others. Scientists, engineers, health care professionals, and technology specialists become leaders in their fields by way of discovery and by communication. In this es-sential book, two seasoned communication consultants offer specific, focused advice to help professionals develop, improve, and polish their interpersonal com-munication, writing, and presentation skills. the authors explain exactly how to manage multiple projects and in-teractions, collaborate with colleagues and others, gain support for ideas through presentations and proposals, and much more.

Soon after the release of Apple’s first iPad, the business world discovered that the popular device, beyond being simply a new, fun, mobile platform for games, e-books, media, and the like, was also a powerful and welcome ally in the workplace. The first edition of TAKE YOUR IPAD TO WORK explored the many ways in which iPads were being put to use on the job and showed readers how to bring the device into their own workflow. Now, in this timely second edition, coinciding with the re-lease of the new third-generation iPad, Brian Prof-fitt explains the latest updates to this revolutionary device and teaches you new ways to put the power and portability of the apple iPad to work for you.
