    Lets

    Celebrate!

    CORNER CUBICLE

    Ten Years!

When I set out to start Women For Hirefrom my apartment in 1999, with mythen-todders Jake and Emma nearby,I never imagined wed be where weare today.

My initia aim was to test the concept

of a career expo geared excusiveyto women in New York City some-thing that, incrediby, no one had everdone.

With no HR experience, I worked many16 hour days for months, researchingthen cod caing company after com-pany, expaining what I was up to.

Perseverance paid off: I convinced 50empoyers to give Women For Hire ashot at our rst event.

Then I had to market it to prospectiveattendees. I enisted friends, famiyand anyone ese I coud nd. It seemsamost quaint these days, handing outand posting iers on coege campus-es just to spread the word. I cajoed afew radio stations into promoting ourrst expo and put a sma cassied adin The New York Times.

Tak about butteries before the BigDay.

Then a funny thing happened: one byone, more than 1,000 women ined upthat morning, resumes in hand, for achance to tak to dozens of recruiters. On the way out, woman after womanstopped by our registration tabe tosay this was the best career expo theyever attended for one reason: it wasfor women, put on by women. Em-

poyers asked when and where thenext event woud take pace.

Their enthusiasm rubbed off on meand I knew I had a hit on my hands.

Now a decade ater, Women For Hirecareer expos are hed in dozens of cit-ies across the U.S., connecting morethan 1,500 empoyersfrom IBM tothe FBIwith thousands of smart andsavvy women ike you.

We are a eading career source forwomen, with our website, Women-ForHire.com, chock fu of informa-tion and videos on everything fromresume and job preparation, workingfrom home, starting a business andadvancing on the job.

I never imagined Id ove my work asmuch as I do today. In fact, every job

I hadfrom working in pubic reationsat ABC and NBC News and then incorporate communications at Viacom

fet so right at the time. I awaysgave it my a.

But it wasnt unti my career took theentrepreneuria turn that I found mycaing.

These days, I cant imagine not be-ing connected to working women or

to Women For Hireespeciay whenI get heartfet emais from women whote us how much we mean to them, how gratefu they are to have WomenFor Hire in their ives.

Im excited to get to work each and ev-ery day. In fact, unike many peope, Idont differentiate between work andife. Its a bended into one for me.

I have found my passionand itshere to stay. Thanks for heping usmake the ast 10 years possibe. Weook forward to serving you for thenext 10, too.

Ah,the dreaded sa-ary question. Theywant a number, but

youre worried that by reveaingit, you knock yoursef out of therunning before youre even con-sidered.

In an idea scenario, theyd teyou the range, instead of askingyours. Of course, the processrarey works this way. It is a ittemessier, a itte more random, soyou need to be prepared.

If you are asked to name your sa-ary requirement in an onine appi-cation, do so. If you dont incude

the information, some empoyerswi reject your resume becauseyou didnt foow directions. Youmay aso be asked for your saaryhistory. Theres ony one correctresponse: The honest numbers.

If an interviewer brings up sa-ary via phone or in person beforeyoure prepared to discuss it, try

When youre pressed directy for adesired range, do your homeworkbefore responding. Your answershoud reect the research youve

surveys show a median of $60,000for your desired position, youresafe to ist a range of $55,000 to$65,000, based on the needs ofthe roe and the experience youbring to it. Use your judgment innaming that number.

    EXPLAINING YOUR PREVIOUS

    SALARY

Its a safe bet that you be askedyour saary history. If you were un-derpaid in your previous position, you may not want to revea thisinformation. Empoyers may basetheir offer on what you were previ-ousy making, or on the ip side,

assume they cant afford you. Youwant the empoyer to base its offeron your current vaue as it reatesto the position youre seeking, not your previous saary. Theresnothing wrong with having a can-did conversation to say just that.

    YOU NAMED A FIGURE TOO

    EARLY

You messed up and named a de-sired gure too eary. After someresearch, you found out that youdeserve more, and they wereprobaby expecting to pay more. How do you go back and askfor more when you have areadyshowed your hand?

Expain that you didnt reaize the

fu responsibiities of the job. Nowthat you have more information on

the eve of the position and whatit entais, that sum is no ongerreevant. Then state the saaryyou think you deserve. Expainthat you have done more marketresearch on comparabe saariesin simiar positions, and youve

    readjusted the saary gureaccordingy.

    AN OFFER HAS BEEN MADE.

    NOW WHAT?

Once you have been offered theposition, money tak wi intensify,so get ready to negotiate. Ask what the typica range is forothers in the company with that

position. Ask whats been budgeted forthat job. Do your research again usingtheir offer as a point of reference. Determine what other benetswithin the tota compensationpackage are important to you be-yond base saary.

    ESTABLISH TWO THINGS INYOUR MIND

    TUESDAY THE 15TH

    How I Changed My Life

I am a wife and mother of two small children.

I wanted to bring in some extra money for all the extras in life that we could never afford. I

wanted to be prepared for the future, you never know what life will bring.

I wanted a career I could count on (and one that didnt require selling things from my home!)

It took me seven months to complete the course, but I finished (and I enjoyed it). I did it all

online and I loved the fact that I could work on the course as much or as little as I wanted.

Determination and desire were critical. The old adage, You can do anything you set your

    mind to, is so true!

It took me only three weeks to find a job after graduating. Talk about exciting! The forums

are truly invaluable when on the job hunt. You can find such a wealth of information there.

You can do searches for potential employers and find out which ones are good for you.

What a supportive network to have!

The best part about being a medical transcriptionist is that I can put my family first. My job

allows me to work whenever I want, and for as much time or as little time as I want. The

flexibility cannot be beat. I often play all day with my children and work in my pajamas at

night. This is the kind of career that I wish I knew about years ago! Thank you, Career Step!

    FINDING THE

    RIGHT FIT

During the interview process, most peope areso focused on answering questions and say-

ing just the right thing so an empoyer wi wantthem. Whie thats wise, it shoudnt be at the expenseof ceding a of the contro and decision-making to theother side. A proper match is a two-way streetbothparties must decide that its a good t.

You dont have to interrogate your interviewer, butyou shoud pose thoughtfu questions to create ameaningfu diaogue.

    For exampe:

    * What are some of the immediate challenges fac-ing the department in the next 90 days? (This etsyou in on what youre in for shoud you choose to ac-cept the position.)

    * I understand the primary duties with this posi-tion. What are some of the secondary responsi-bilities? How often are they required? (Secondarywork can often account for the buk of your time if

an empoyer doesnt staff effectivey. Know whatsexpected before saying yes.)

    * Why is this position vacant? (Youre hoping tohear that the previous empoyee was promotedthat means that someone has been successfu inthe position and the company ikes to promote fromwithin. Perhaps its a newy created position becauseof growth. On the ip, theres high turnover and thecompany strugges to nd the right t. You may bejust what the doctor ordered, but you dont want to

discover on Day One that youre the fth person in 10months to occupy that seat.)

    * What are the qualications of previous employ-

ees whove excelled at this position? (Be curious

and earn from the success of others whove comebefore you.)

    * How would you and your direct reports charac-

terize your management style? (Your prospectiveboss may be a micromanager or he or she may be to-tay hands off. Probe a bit to understand what youdbe deaing with.)

    * If you could change one thing about the cultureof the department, what would it be? (This is an-

other way of asking, Whats wrong with this pace?without appearing to be rude.)

Add your own questions to this mix based on your re-search and conversations. You ikey nd that mostempoyers are appreciative of the time and interestyoure investing in the process. When they hire theright peope, they avoid the high cost and headacheassociated with turnover.

In Juy 2008 they opened The Craft lounge, a sma, friendy gift boutique that ses ony handcrafteditems more than 70 percent by oca residents who by day work as everything from dentists and awyers to dancers and hair styists.

Five years ago KathyPecht invited me to hermonthy knitting groupat her house. Her sister,Susie levy, and ten or so womenwoud gather once a month for a

ight dinner, some wine and otsof knitting.

Everyone reay ooked forwardto these Friday night gatherings. It was a great way to unwind, tobe inspired by others and to havefun. As time went on, the gather-ings started to grow and peopebegan to bring a sorts of craftprojects such as beading, cross-

    stitching and crocheting.

    One night, after everyone ese

had eft, Susie, Kathy and Istarted taking about how wewished we coud create a busi-ness where peope coud cometogether and craft. It turned outthat a three of us had had thisexact same idea for some time.It took severa years to bring

our vision to fruition. We startedout by having craft saes twice

a year in my home and as wordspread and more crafters signedon, we expanded to a craft fair

at our oca ibrary. I taught craftcasses at a rec center, offeringdifferent crafts to see which ones

appeaed to various age groups.Kathy taught knitting.

After hosting severa very suc-cessfu craft fairs and casses,we knew it was time to nd aphysica space to house ourdream. When a oca photo shop

went out of business, we knewthat woud be the perfect spacefor The Craft lounge. The spacehadnt been updated in over tenyears and needed a ot of work. The owner agreed to give us thespace for the short term if wedpay to renovate.

We ripped out the od carpet, tore

    down peg board was, and

I can ook at a woman and see not just who she is butwho she can become.

Women do we at Coonia because theyre wiing todo things that men wont, ike handwritten notes andcontinua foow-up. I aso think that women tend tocome across as more beievabe and open.

She joined Coonia life amost 20 years ago, at age

This careerprovided me the unique opportunity to have a checksigned and made out to meand I was in contro ofthe doar amount.

She got her rst job by responding to a newspaper ad.The manager asked her a few questions, tod her he

We dont do things that way any more, but I succeed-ed because Coonia lifes home ofce embraced me.They were my team.

My resume was a done dea, but I knew I needed to naimy interview.

I had not reay interviewed in years and I hadtwo weeks to get ready. Since I am oder than

many peope I work with, I needed to makesure I did not come across as od.

After seeing Tory Johnson on ABCs GoodMorning America, I went to WomenForHire.com.

I coudnt beieve how much information therewas. By the time I went into my interview I hadthe power jewery, the understated makeupand the questions to ask. I was ready withresponses to possibe questions, even ready

to negotiate my saary. I fet condent.

It fet ike a rst date that went reay we. Ihoped the peope I taked with fet the sameand woud ca back for a second date soon.Within the week human resources caed me with an offer.less than a month after my interview, I started my newposition.

I am now working fu-time as a research assistant on theNationa Chidrens Study, an ongoing 21-pus year ook atchidren from preconception to age 21.

I thought WomenForHire.comwas so good that I sent the ink

to my husband and my girfriendwho is thinking about goingback to work. Though I wasnot ooking at a high-poweredor high-paying position, I wasabe to use the information to myadvantage and ended up withan exciting job, on a study thatmeans something to me.

Im working with information Ind interesting and on a ong-

term study that gives me, hope-fuy, some job security.

Maybe this woud have workedout this way without Women for

Hire, but I think it reay made a difference in my whoeapproach to the interview.

    By Marleen Graham

I attended Women For Hires Work from Home Expo in Atanta after mycontract with IBM expired. Some women came with friends. Others cameaone as I did. One woman had just been aid off from her human resourcesposition and found it very difcut to get another job at her age.

The eary morning seminars with Tory Johnson and author Robyn Spizmanwere great. Tory was very candid about her own career strugges, how shecame to create Women For Hire, how so many work from home opportuni-ties are a scam. I never forget Robyn saying that a of us were sitting on abookand we a started ooking under our seats to see if we had one. Shethen expained that each one of us has a story to te and gave us tips on how

    to write ours.

I waked away with interest in working from home. I read a piece on WomenForHire.com about starting a business fromhome and then I researched companies that are inexpensive to startup, dont require oans and t my skis and person-aity.

I decided the concierge business was for me because I ike peope and coud bring my 15-pus years in customerservice experience to it. A I needed to start was a phone, computer, fax and a car. After I gured out what I wanted todo, I utiized business resource information on WomenForHire.com and had one consuting session with SCORE. I thenstarted Redy2Assist, llC which is an onsite/virtua concierge business for corporations or individuas. Redy2Assist witake time to grow, but its my backup Pan B to make suppementa income.

Women For Hire Network is a great resource. I dont think I woud have even contempated opening my own businesswithout it. I have encouraged many women to join.

I ike to say that I paid the extra fee to Women ForHire so that I coud hear the specia guests speakat the eary morning breakfast, but a bigger reasonwas so I coud be rst in ine when those doorsopened and get a jump on everyone ese!

I stopped by the Ernst & Young booth, hoping toand an interview in their corporate socia responsi-biity group, but they had no positions avaiabe. Therecruiter spoke with me for awhie and nay turnedto me and said, You know, I have this job I thinkyoud be great for.

The position was a coordinator roe embedded in acient serving group that sounded both interestingand chaenging, not to mention unique. A few weeksand many interviews ater, I got the ca: I was nowan empoyee of Ernst & Young. And in fact, the cacame on Eection Day.

Fast forward to 2008, another eection year and fouryears since I was hired at Ernst & Young. In that

time, Ive been promoted twice and now serve asthe Area Director of Resource Management.

No job cant be a work and no pay, so Ive gotteninvoved in our Take Our Daughters and Sons toWork Day initiative, our environmenta sustainabiitygroup, and our womens network. Ive made somevery good friends across the country aong the way.

last year, Americans voted for the change theywanted to see in America. But sometimes, to getthe change you want to see in your own ife, youcan ony rey on a good resume, a great job fair, andsomeones vote of condence in you.

As I think about our tough economy and the faout ithas on a of us, I continue to be thankfu for WomenFor Hire and that job fair ve years ago. Not ony didit give me a job, but it gave me a meaningfu way toconnect with otherseven if I didnt get that corpo-rate socia responsibiity roe.
