I was just hopping by,I heard a cry!Not a whimper, or a yelp,But a plaintive cry for help!I said, "Don't wait,Investigate!"So I didn't hesitate,And I hope I'm not too late.Was it you? . . . Was it you? . . . Say hey, you two,Is there something I can do?

(Music continues. Kangaroo & Kookaburras interact, Kookaburras twitter and point toward Dingo.)

Kangaroo: [sings]

If I understand your lingo,You're telling me that Dingo,Made a grab, made a steal,And would like to make a meal,Of that furry little fellow!

Ha! Ol' Dingo's pretty yellow. So when he hears me bellow,I think that he will find,It's not hard to change your mind,Or lose your appetite,When you realize that you might,Not be around to see the night!

As a matter of fact,Let's see how he'll react,To a little bit of this, and a little bit of that:

It's time (cha, cha, cha!) for Wombat Combat!

(The music continues, Kangaroo & Kookaburras interact, kicking and punching the air.)

#10: Script

(Platypuses enter Left)

Kookaburra #1:

Oh! Here come the Platypuses. We must let them know what the Dingo has done.

(Kookaburra #2 crosses right to meet Platypuses, pantomimes agitated speech.)

Platypus #1:

You know, I don't think that fighting is the best thing to do. We've had a bit of experience with that old Dingo. He has a lot of kin folks who would love an excuse to make mischief. The last thing we need around here is a Dingo war.

Page 8

Page 9: Wombat Stew copy 3 · 2019. 6. 12. · Wombat Stew A Musical Play For Children By Philip McEntee & Pauline Beach Based on the book by Marcia K. Vaughan The Cast: Rocks & Bushes =

Platypus #2:

But wait! Don't you worry. I think we can outsmart that old dog. I'll bet his greed will get the better of him. Here's a plan! (Platypus, Kangaroo & Kookaburras huddle together.) This way, we'll beat him at his own game. You go and spread the word.

Platypus #1:

Send us some help.

(Kookaburras and Kangaroo exit left.)

Platypus #2:

Hmmm. Old Dingo ain't looking too bright.

Platypus #1:

He just might fall for it.

(Platypuses cross right to enter dingo's camp.)

#11: Recorded Music: Platypus Walkabout

#12: Script

Dingo:

Uh oh! There are those old platypuses! I wonder what they're doing, poking around here. Maybe I can get them to leave.

Platypus #1:

G'day mate! How's tricks? Sure has been a while since I ran into the likes of you.

Platypus #2:

Where have you been hiding yourself?

Dingo:

Duckbill! What are you doing, coming around these parts? I'd have thought you folks learned better that last time.

Page 9

Page 10: Wombat Stew copy 3 · 2019. 6. 12. · Wombat Stew A Musical Play For Children By Philip McEntee & Pauline Beach Based on the book by Marcia K. Vaughan The Cast: Rocks & Bushes =

Platypus #1:

Just taking a walkabout, Mate! You know what they say: Fall off? You've just gotta get right back in the saddle. ( Platypus #2 pushes past Dingo and sniffs the air. )

Platypus #2:

Whatcha got here? Is it lunch time already?

Dingo:

Oh well. There'll be plenty for both of us, I reckon. Look! Look what I caught! It just came bumbling into camp. Oh, it put up quite a tussle, let me tell you. ( Dingo mimics fighting. ) But, as you can see, he was no match for me.

Platypus #1:

Gave you a fight, did he?

Platypus #2:

[aside] More likely a fright. Whatcha going to do with him?

Dingo:

Do with him? What'd you expect? [sings] Oh, I've got me a stewpot bubbling hot.And now it's time to add a little Wombot!

Platypus #2:

Wait!

Dingo:

What????

Platypus #1:

Wait, you Mongrel! ( Platypus stirs the stewpot) This brew looks mighty thin to me. Where'd you learn to cook? In the city? No, no, no. Here in the Outback, we want a meal we can sink our teeth into.

Platypus #2:

What you need to do, Mate, is to thicken up your broth.

Page 10

Well! Excusez moi, Monsieur Chef! What do you suggest?

Platypus #1:

Mud! That's what you need. Mud! Thicken it up with generous blops of tasty billabong mud. ( Platypuses pick up shovels. ) Here you go Mate. Billabong Mud! That should do it!

#13:

Platypus #1: [sings]

Seems like only yesterday,My Mama said to me:If you can keep a secret,Here's our family recipe! She said her Grandmama heard about it from her Mom,Who had learned it years ago from a rascal named Tom.So just remember these two words, my Mama said to me: (She told me:)

Platypus #2: ( Platypus #2 hands the shovel to Dingo. )

Here. You add a coupl'a more. Suit it to your taste. I better make sure these knots are tight. ( Platypus #2 unties Wombat. )

Dingo:

Platypus #1:

Cast Songs

Waltzing Matilda

By

Banjo Paterson

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,Under the shade of a coolibah tree. And he sang as he sat and waited while his billy boiled:" You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me!"

Waltzing Matilda! Waltzing Matilda! You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me!Now his ghost may be heard as you ride beside that billabong,"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me."
