Habitat The Northern Hairy Nose Wombat is

now ONLY found in one small national park called EPPING FOREST in central Queensland.

What’s Being Done???• Epping Forest has been made into a

National Park• 300 hectares of the park has a dingo proof

fence around it• Setting up breeding programs• Making artificial burrows• Regular health checks• Providing secure food and water• Back burning to prevent bush fires• Trying to get rid of Buffel Grass• Encouraging kangaroos to leave the park

What are the problems?The NHNW has a cousin called the Southern Hairy

Nosed Wombat. These are not endangered but the NHNW certainly is !!!!!! Why??????

Well they have faced many problems including:• Predation by dingos, foxes and feral cats• Destruction of habitat by cattle• Introduced grass[ buffel grass] doesn't provide

enough nutrients• Competition for food from rabbits, kangaroos and

swampies (swamp wallabies)• Fire, drought, flood

foundation to continue its important work $

• Raise awareness about the plight of the NHNW

Interesting facts about the NHNW

• Their dung is square shaped!! (can you guess why?) • They can weigh up to 40 kg • Lasiorhinus krefftii is their scientific name. It means

‘Hairy nose’. Their aboriginal name is Yamanon • They are related to the koala and have evolved from

the diprotodon• Their pouch is on backwards. Can you guess why? • They can live up to 29 years
