He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. — 1 Peter 2:24a
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41).
Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23).
Second Reading — Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25).
Gospel — The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10).

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD
For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever.

Saint Benedict News The Coronavirus has changed the way we deliver Catholic education, but the commitment of our faculty, staff and students have toward Catholic education hasn’t faltered. Recently, the Archdiocese shared that “distance learning” would continue through the end of the school year. This week is “Virtual Spirit Week” at St. Benedict Catholic School. Each day the students submit pictures of themselves in a range of environments, outside, with a pet, reading a book or working on an assignment, sharing their “talent” and giving thanks. Want to know more about St. Benedict Catholic School, give us a call. School enrollment is open and classes begin August 12. Call 251-986-8143 for more information.
The parish office will be open from 8 AM to 12 noon each day
to take your calls and answer questions. The front door of
the church will be opened from 8 AM to 12 Noon Monday
thru Friday. Your are welcome to go in and pray.
Please take care of yourself and your family and follow the
guidelines for protecting them.
“We all look forward to the day when public Masses will resume in our Archdiocese. Although the suspension of public Masses had been extended through this week, it must again be extended indefinitely. Let us pray that public Masses will resume soon. This will depend upon medical advice and civil authorities. -Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi
For those who cannot receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament at this time, Archbishop Rodi suggests the
following prayer:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
-St. Alphonsus Ligori
Although there have not been any congregation Masses since the virus
started, St Bartholomew has been busy with repairs and modifications:
The Electric lights in the church have been updated to LED lights and exit
signs and emergency lights have been added for your safety.
The North and South side doors and the Sacristy door and the door to the
altar servers room have been changed to enable parishioners to exit with
the outside being locked for their safety.
The altar carpet and the cushions and kneelers of the pew have been
cleaned and sanitized as have all the other chairs in the church and the
chapel.
The fire suppressor in the parish hall kitchen has been replaced.
The parish hall floors have been stripped and waxed and are beautiful.
Most of these projects were covered by the contributions dropped off at the
