This year we are field testing the computer based Smarter Bal- anced Assessment, which becomes the new Washington State assessment starting in 2014-2015. Participating in this field test allows both our students and staff the op- portunity to gain some experience prior to being held fully accountable next year. This field test provides practice and experi- ence with the new assessment system, but it does not give individual student scores. The Smarter Balanced Assessment replaces the MSP for Reading, Writing and Math in all grades. Our fifth grade will still be tak- ing the MSP Science assessment. Please make sure your kids are well rested and arrive on time for school. Testing will begin promptly at 9:15 AM. Below you will find the testing dates. Please contact me if you have any ques- tions. From the Woodburn Gym

The “Jungle Gym” will be coming to Woodburn El-

ementary the April 28th – May 2nd. Students will

have fun as they safely make their way through a

course of gymnastic inspired events challenging

their muscular strength and endurance, balance,

and flexibility. If you are interested in volunteering

in the gym during the “Jungle Gym,” please contact Ms. Olivas: ix-

“Making Tracks for Woodburn” fundraiser is a walk-a-thon collaboration

between the Woodburn PAWS parent group and the P.E. department.

“Making Tracks for Woodburn” will take place during students’ recess on

Thursday, May 15th. Students will receive pledge sheets on April 25th for

the walk-a-thon to raise money for school re-

lated functions and projects. If you would like

to volunteer for “Making Tracks,” please

watch for an announcement to sign up on

Sign-up Genius.

"Making Tracks for Woodburn" Family

Hike will be on Saturday, May 17 in La-

camas Creek Park...in Woodburn's back

yard! Meet at the Woodburn Elementary

flag pole at 10AM. Hike will proceed

shortly after. The hike will start at the

trail head off of SE Crowne and through

the McEnry Trail that runs parallel to

the creek. The hike is about 1.5 miles from start to finish. The

hike should take a maximum of two hours.

Step Ahead Preschool:

• Open to children who are at least 3

• Sessions meet 4 days per week (M, T, Th, F)

• AM Class 8:20– 10:50

• PM Class 12:20—2:50

• Tuition is $250/month

• Located at Woodburn Elementary

Papermaker Preschool:

• Open to children who are at least 4

• Sessions meet 4 days per week for students on IEPs (M, T, Th, F) and 5 days per week for students paying tuition. Tuition is $300/month

Grades: 2-5

Challenging and fun! Build machines with motors and learn about gears and pulleys. Make cars that drive & robots that move.

LEGO JR.

Grades: K-1

Design your masterpiece, and then create it! Each day your architect will be given a building project that they must first design using graph paper, and then build with Legos. Examples of projects include a picture frame, watermelon, and balloon powered car.

SUCCESS THROUGH CHESS

Grades: K-5, Ongoing throughout the school year.

Develop critical and creative thinking skills while having fun learning the game of chess! We have a comprehensive program appropriate for all students, who will progress at their own rate. Instruction in-cludes the critical principles, tactics, and strategies as well as “Success Secrets” applicable both to ac-ademics and to life! Curriculum developed by two-time national chess champion Andrew Svehaug.

SAFE SITTER’S TRAINING

Ages: 11-15

Prepares the student for nurturing & protecting children. Learn about babysitting as a business, child care essentials, safety for the sitter, injury management, preventing problem behavior, choking infant and choking child rescue. Bring a sack lunch and beverage to class.

SAFE ON MY OWN

Ages: 8-11

Children who spend some time “home alone” either before or after school or during the weekend are a fast growing population. “Safe on My Own” is an informational and interactive class that will give your children the skills they need to feel more confident about taking care of themselves when they are home alone. Bring a snack and drink to class.

Soccer Rules with Dan Macaya

Ages 5-12

Learn new skills or touch-up on fundamentals: dribbling, passing, shooting & defending skills. Coach-ing staff includes CHS Soccer players. Bring a water bottle to camp. Please send a snack to camp with your child. Snack will be at 1:30 each day.

Library Howl for April

Voting for our State nominations for Sasquatch and Washington Children’s Picture Book Award will

occur the week of March 24th. We will hear the state results after Spring Break. The choice will be

tough, because there were so many good reads.

When: The week of Earth Day (April 21st -25th)

Where: Woodburn Cafeteria

How It Works: Drop off up to 6 used books during lunch that you would like to exchange.

Books should be in fairly good condition and close to the reading level you would like to ex-

change. Please no ‘Baby Board Books”. You will be able to choose as many books as you

brought each day. A credit will be made for the following day if the selection is sparse. Left

over books at the end of the week will be donated to the public library’s book sale. Let’s be

Earth Friendly and ‘reuse’ our resources! Happy Earth Day!

Woodburn Wolves Golden Book Award

Our first Woodburn Wolves Golden Book Award Trophy will be given out at this

month’s Academic Assembly on March 28th. This prestige honor will go to the class or

classes that achieve a perfect monthly on time return of borrowed books from the li-

brary. This award comes with a class coupon worth 15 minutes of appy time on the

mini iPads! Woodburn Wolves are responsible Library Patrons!

Camas Preschool Open Registration

Registration for Camas Preschools is open for the 2014-15

school year. This includes Papermaker Preschool at Camas High

School, Step Ahead Preschool at Woodburn Elementary and

Camas Community Education Preschool at the District Office.
