Hello and welcome to the

Autumn edition of the WN4 Local Link

Well, I am now in my element as I love the start of dark nights and even more so, the reassuring sound of the

Strictly Come Dancing theme tune. Not to mention the bright lights and razzamatazz of X Factor gracing our screens

over the coming months.

My house is just about liveable following the recent renovations and we are in the process of fine-tuning the nice bits and to my surprise, we are still talking to each other as we make

preparations for Christmas. I am quite missing the morning banter with our builders, but not the tea-making aspect. The heating is on full already thanks to our newly installed boiler complete with “Wave” app which allows me to switch the heating on even when I am out and

about. What a pleasure to return home to a warm house, I love it. Needless to say my other half wishes that the system came with a password so that he could restrict my heat obsession - his words not mine! Warm house and hot suppers from our new kitchen

- we are so ready for this winter.

With Halloween and bonfire night around the corner to help encourage us into the darker nights now is the time to look out for some great local events. There is no better feeling

than been wrapped up warm and cosy with hands wrapped around a dish of pie and peas watching the many events that makes local life so special.

Thanks to all those brilliant people who got involved with the Ashton Festival. It is so heartwarming to realise that each year our local town event is getting bigger with

support from local businesses as well as such a wealth of local enthusiasm and talent.

If you haven’t already booked your Christmas events don’t leave it too late. What with wreath-making and Christmas catch-up with friends to pencil in the diary, make sure that this year is the one you manage to book early and book local.

GET TO KNOW FRAUDKnow the Facts. Stop the FraudKeeping your money safe is your bank’s number one priority.

This is why they have set up a number of secure procedures to protect you from the fraudsters.

As the criminals are getting ever more sophisticated and their techniques are constantly changing. They can often pretend that they work for the Police or your Bank. There are usually tell-tale requests that a fraudster makes that your bank will Never make. Knowing these can ensure that you don’t fall victim to fraud.

Your Bank will Never ask You to do...

They will never ask for your online banking password or your PIN number over the phone or via email.

Send anybody to your home to collect bank cards, cash or anything else.

They will never ask you to send personal or banking information via email or text.

Send you an email which contains a link to a page which asks you to log-in or enter your personal or banking details.

Ask you to hand over cash or authorise the transfer of funds to a new account.

Call to advise you to buy land, commodities or diamonds.

They will never ask you to carry out a test online banking transaction.

Use or provide services via any mobile app other than the bank’s official app.

Always remember that if it looks, or soundssuspicious it most probably is. Report it to your bank...

Keep your Cards Close...The Scam: Cold Calls and ‘Vishing

Fraudsters will call and claim they are from the bank or the police and that a fraudulent credit card payment has been spotted. They may also say that a card is due to expire and needs to be replaced. In order to convince you that they are genuine they will suggest that you hang up and phone your bank on the number printed on the back of your debit or credit card. The fraudster will then not disconnect the line and when you think that you are talking to your bank, you are in fact still speaking to them.

Usually the fraudsters will then start to ask for all your personal information including your PIN. A courier will then be dispatched to pick up your card, promising to provide a new one. Once they know your details and have your card they will be able to start making large bogus payments. This technique of using a telephone to steal personal or banking details is called ‘vishing’.

If you suspect that you have become a victim of fraud you should...

1 Stop sending any money immediately. Call your bank using a number from their official website. Report the fraud to the police by contacting Action Fraud via the website - www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040

2 If the fraud is investment or ‘share’ fraud, you also need to inform the Financial Conduct Authority Consumer Help line on 0800 111 6768.

3 Once you have been the victim of fraud unfortunately you are more likely to be targeted again, especially by firms offering to recover funds that you have lost.

After a crazy New York Fashion Week followed closely by London Fashion Week I needed to de-stress. Having partied on the same platforms as Cara Delevingne and Carine Roitfeld, enough is enough, my kidneys and bunions need this!

I roamed the duty-free shops at the airport for goodies to reward myself for two weeks of pure hard work. I then had to return some of the more luxurious purchases and promise myself that I could pick these up on the return journey. To be fair I am not too sure of the benefit of a pair of 6 inch Kurt Geiger heels where I washeading - no heels required just lycra and green tea.....

I had booked myself into the Purple Valley Yoga Retreat in between make-up and wardrobe fittings last month and it kept me balanced knowing I was going to be spending two whole weeks in Goa, on the West Coast of India where I was promised there would be white beaches that merged into the

azure Arabian Sea - I so needed this. Not only has this become an important part of my life but it has also encour-aged me to want to share this practice with friends and it all stems from a tiny purchase made at the Pineapple Studio’s shop in New York City. I had called in with my friend Louiza and with the help of a voucher, had purchased extreme amounts of fabulous match-ing lycra body suits. I then had to seek out somewhere to show off my new wardrobe so went along with another friend to the Sonic Yoga Studio located downtown.

This was the start of the journey that has brought me to where I am right now, on a flight heading far away with little luggage except a few gym slips and sweat bands (weighing peanuts). So now I am thinking that a little light shopping at the end of the retreat will help me max out my luggage allow-ance. I may even find room for a little Buddha to help complete the whole ex-perience. As I slip into my onesie, cour-tesy of BA, pop open some Pringles and enjoy my last G&T for a whole fortnight I raise a glass - India here I come.

ow its only week four of the kids being back at school and somehow, Bailey has managed to come home in a different pair of trousers. I spent the whole of the holidays dreading having to name tag all my son’s belongings, then a whole week dedicated to “hand” stitching the tags onto his uniform - and still he comes home in the wrong ones! What makes it even worse is that they were halfway up his legs and looked as though they had been passed down through at least 20 generations. When I overheard another parent in the playground laughing at how their sprog had come home with a great new pair of trousers, that were only a little bit too long but of course he would grow into them, I had no choice but to challenge her. I confidently strode over and asked her to check the name tag and there it was, staring right back at me the neatly placed tag that I had so painstakingly worked on. My hard work had paid off, phew! Bailey no longer looks pinched and his little ankles are covered back up again in time for winter. I am so glad

my own clothes sport labels, OK so they may say the wrong names such as Stella McCartney or Joules but I know they belong to me, after all labels are for life! Now Poppy, on the other hand, is as clean and pressed when she comes home from school as when she leaves in a morning. I am sure she sits in the same position all day, no creases, no pen marks and no lunch down her top. She is either very careful or, maybe, spends most days on the naughty chair, I haven’t decided which yet. That said the house is back in reasonable order and clean again. I have even been touching up on a bit of paintwork, mainly to cover up the wall paintings and other craft-related antics that happened during the long school holidays. Roll on the dark nights now when my wine time starts promptly at 7pm and we have no need to battle with black-out blinds to mask the summer sun.
