WITHOUT SEEING YOU WE BELIEVE

The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23/24, 2021

‘Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!’ (Mark 10:47)

You’ve really gotta hand it to Bartimaeus, the blind man in this weekend’s Gospel reading.

Here is a guy that knows exactly what he wanted, was determined to get it, and knew

just how to make it happen: Jesus. And while the miracle of his sight being restored is surely a signifi cant event, there’s also a very important element of the narrative that is often overlooked:

Bartimaeus calling out to Jesus as “Son of David.”

The title ‘Son of David’ meant that someone was the Jewish Messiah, or Christ. Believe it or not,

besides Peter’s very private confession to Jesus,

Bartimaeus is the fi rst person to publicly acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.

Jesus was always called ‘rabbi’ or ‘teacher,’ whereas this guy is proudly proclaiming, “You are GOD!” And best of all, when people are telling him to be quiet, he yells it out again

even louder. That level of faith in someone you can’t even see is pretty remarkable.

So when we look at our own lives, are we a Bartimaeus or a silencer? Do we proudly

proclaim our faith in Christ to those we come across or do we quietly blend in with the

crowd? Do we live with Christian values as followers of Jesus or do we do what’s

comfortable? Going forward, let’s open our eyes (and hearts) to the Lord .

From Fr. Steve...

From the Diocese...

Dear Family,We encounter Bartimaeus in our Gospel reading today. This is the very familiar story of the blind man who seeks an encounter with Jesus in order to be able to see. It is an incredible story of faith and perseverance. He was not going to be deterred by the people who were telling him to be quiet. What is interesting is that these people were probably quite aware of Bartimaeus’ situation. Many had probably given alms to him at some point. Since they were following Jesus, they obviously knew of His powers to heal. Yet they couldn’t ‘see’ past their own desire to be in the presence of Jesus in order to ‘see’ Bartimaeus’ need for healing. Their blindness kept them from offering assistance to one who really needed help. This is a form of spiritual blindness from which most of us need healing. Do we have the faith of Bartimaeus to call out to Jesus in our greatest need or do we try to handle it all by ourself? Do we not ‘see’ our need for the healing touch of Jesus in our life? Do we ignore those who are most in need of our prayers and assistance when they are crying out for help or do we bring them the love and mercy of Jesus? We may not be physically blind but we may sometimes be spiritually blind and it is then that we need to call out to Jesus for healing that will prepare us for eternal life with God in heaven!

Praised Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!!!!

Father Steve

The 30th Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading JER 31:7-9

Thus says the LORD: Shout with joy for Jacob, exult at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say: The LORD has delivered his people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them back

from the land of the north; I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst, the mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng. They

departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them; I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble. For I am a father to Israel. Ephraim is my first-born.

The word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm PS 126: 1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6 R/. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing. R/.

Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. R/.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the torrents in the southern desert. Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. R/.

Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown,They shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves. R/.

Second Reading HEB 5:1-6Brothers and sisters: Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative

before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for

himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you; just as he says in

another place: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. The word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God.

Gospel MK 10:46-52 As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the

son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” And many rebuked him, telling him to be

silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.” He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go

your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.The Gospel of the Lord. R/. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
