we need to add smallconverter boxes to get backabout half the channels weused to get by simplyturning on the TV. Thesenew converter boxes, ofcourse, come with their own

remote controls. We nowhave about four remotecontrols for every TV wewatch. One remote controlis for the TV, the second isfor the VCR, the third forthe DVD player and thefourth is for the new box! To

make matters worse, the cable TV company, realizing thatour entertainment center has now run out of room for allthese electronic devices, has included an infra-red “eye”with the new remote that must be taped to the front of theTV and wired to the now-hidden newly installed fourthremote control box. More wires! The back of thatentertainment center of ours now has more spaghetti thanan Italian restaurant! Want to watch TV? Here’s the drill: 1– turn on TV, make sure it is on channel 3 or 4. Turn onconverter box. Use converter box remote control to changechannel. Use TV remote control to turn up volume. UseVCR remote control to watch movie. Use TiVo remote

control to watch prerecorded sports eventat leisure. Use DVD remote control towatch disks. Got that? Oh, wait aminute….the TV doesn’t come on!Please call cable company to activate newconverter box service so they can be surethe box is installed at the correct billingaddress to ensure no one is swiping theirservice. And we haven’t even mentionedthe issues associated with the TV setsthemselves. All these questions arisingfrom plasma, SDTV, LED and LCD TVsis enough to make you feel like you’reon LSD! It is a mess! Cable TV was agreat idea when there was one 24 hour a

day news network likeCNN, one sports-onlynetwork like ESPN, TheWeather Channel, a couplemovie channels and achannel for old programslike The Twilight Zone andAndy of Mayberry for $9.95a month. Everything elsewas broadcast for free overthe air. All the overkill wehave today has made it justtoo hard. The time has cometo listen to the radio again!

SCHOOL CRUNCH:It is the best of times, it isthe worst of times.Paraphrasing CharlesDickens never seemed moreappropriate than WestlakeSchools today! One onhand, master plans call for$84 million in constructionimprovements that willtransform the WestlakeHigh campus into a state-of-the-art example of publiceducation. On the other, there is the threat of over $3million in operating budgetcuts coming from Ohio

under current state fundingcrunches. Westlake schoolofficials must be eternallygrateful to voters forpassing last May’s 3.4 millbond issue that made an $84million bond issue a reality.$54 million of that moneywill go into high schoolconstruction that reportedlywill compare Westlake Highto a college campus. $20million will go to a newMiddle School, and $13million for renovations toBurneson. Imagine notpassing the bond issue andstill having to swallow statecut-backs. Yikes! Still, aslong as there are children tobe educated andcommunities that rely onquality school systems tomaintain property valuesand residential desirability, systems like the WestlakeSchool District will havesome measure of security.Westlake Schools should behappy they passed the bond

It is great to be reminded onceagain that there is a sun in the skyafter a few dark winter months thatwe have experienced here inCleveland. It is great that springtimeis finally here. There is certainly asense of renewal and familiarity withthis time of year that just feels sogood to all of us.

As we come upon the variousholiday seasons at this time of year,it’s also a time to recount andremember what we have been doing in the past and makeplans for the future. So, I figure this is a perfect time to goback to basics with your dental visits and talk about one ofthe most important things that happen in the dental office –the dental examination that you get when you visit yourdentist or hygienist.

By far, one of the most important facets to the dentistis when they do a complete examination of not just yourteeth, but also all of the soft tissue structures in your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, gums and lips. This is allpretty much standard in every examination that dentists giveto their patients. I would probably say that checking yourteeth is the easiest part, as we can have a really good ideaof what is happening just by a visual examination and alsowith x-rays. One of the most important aspects of everydental examination, and certainly the most life-saving is an

New Screening For Springtime…examination and screeningfor oral cancer. We werejust reminded of this whena patient recently came inwith an ugly looking ulcerunder the tongue, which wasindeed oral cancer. Like anycancer, if oral cancer iscaught early, then there aremuch less severecomplications. If left togrow, oral cancer can be adeadly. What most peopledon’t know is that oralcancer is more commonthan melanoma, lymphoma, the Hodgkin diseases, andmany other diseases, whichare more familiar.

There are a few newscreening devices for oralcancer and it is crucial thatyou ask your dentist if theyhave checked you for oralcancer and if they have ascreening device in theiroffice. We have beenscreening patients for oral

cancer for the last few yearsand one thing I can assureyou, if your dentist doesn’tscreen you for oral cancer,no other health careprofessional will.

A good dentalexamination is the basis forany treatment that any ofyou should be having. I callit taking inventory inpatients’ mouths – if I don’tknow what they have andwhat is good aboutsomeone’s mouth, then Ihave no idea what we canbuild on top of it so that theycan have a long, lasting, beautiful and healthy smile.

For a free consultationor just to come in to talk tous about any of your dentalneeds, please call us at 440-892-1810 today. We arehere to help you smile.

This year European Design Imports celebrates a decade ofdistributing Polish Pottery in the United States. Owners and long-time Westlake residents, Rick & JoAnn Holton have remainedone of the leading distributors of this hand-painted stonewarefrom the small Polish town of Boleslawiec, Poland.

What began with ten pieces on our dining room table hasamassed into an inventory surpassing 15,000 pieces. This hasbeen a home-based business for the past ten years of distribut-ing Polish Pottery to more than 225 kitchen/gourmet shopsthroughout the United States. As our business has grown, wedecided to take the next step and open a retail location inWestlake. But this will not be your typical shop, this shop willreplicate the factory shops in Poland. I wanted to bring my loveof shopping for Polish Pottery in Poland to Westlake. So whenyou enter the Ceramika Polish Pottery Shop in Westlake it willbe like shopping in Poland. A video presentation will show youhow this beautiful stoneware is created from the ground wherethe clay is dug to your table.

On our March shipment you will see approximately 8,300new pieces being added to our inventory. We pride ourselves onkeeping our inventory fresh by constantly adding new shapesand patterns. Arriving and “back by popular demand” are the

Pysanki Easter eggs. These hand painted wooden eggsare the creation of a cottage industry producing these eggsin a small village in Poland. Once the pysanki eggs havebeen painted, each family hangs a burlap bag outside forthe owner of the company to retrieve. You may have asmany as 50 families or more painting these eggs all yearlong gearing up for the Easter season. These eggs are ex-changed among friends and relatives during Easter visi-tations along with their good wishes. This year we will beadding the smaller robin’s egg to our collection and don’tforget to check out the hand-painted deviled egg dish in avariety of patterns.

The history of Polish Stoneware originated as folkart in the early 1800’s in the German province of Silesia.Nestled on the Bobr River in Boleslawiec, Poland theCeramika Artystyzcna factory continues to create theworld’s most widely sought after Polish Stoneware de-signs. For centuries the old world technique of creatinghand stamped designs has been passed down through gen-erations. By carefully cutting nature inspired shapes fromdried sea sponges, each artist applies their designs in acontinuous stamping rhythm until each pattern layer iscomplete. Some brushwork is applied in the more com-plicated patterns such as the “Unikat”, (Unique) or Sig-nature series line of patterns.

Every hand-painted piece of stoneware captures theemotion of the artist’s hand at the moment it is being cre-ated. The resulting patterns will hold subtle variationsmaking each piece its own unique creation.

All Polish Stoneware is formed from a white clayexclusive to the Silesian region of Poland with a unique

lead free glazing which is applied and then fired in coal andgas ovens at temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees centi-grade. This process creates non-toxic stoneware pieces thatare safe for use in the oven, microwave and dishwasher andare impervious to abrasives. This extremely durable stonewarewill not crack or chip easily, will cook evenly, hold heat andcold for longer periods of time and clean up easily…Elegantyet practical!

We will also be introducing a very limited selection fromthe Borowski Glass Factory in Boleslawiec, Poland. TheBorowski family crafts colorful one-of-a-kind hand-blown glasssculptures. Although family members have had little exposurein the United States, they are acclaimed throughout Europe fortheir exceptional visions in glass. This renowned European fam-ily has created uniquely-shaped pieces sought out by muse-ums and collectors worldwide. The enthusiasm of the Borowskifamily for their art is reflected in their distinctive handmademasterworks – each displayinga rare sense of individualityfunctionality and creative free-dom. Additional pieces areavailable upon request.

JoAnn Holton invites youto stop into Ceramika’s newheadquarters at WilliamsburgSquare in Westlake.

A study shows thatpeople who have dogs aspets and take them on walkshave less body fat than thosewho don’t walk their dogs, and those without dogs.

A study presented at the54th American College of

Owning a Dog Can Keep You SlimSports Medicine (ACSM)Annual Meeting in NewOrleans, examineddifferences in physicalactivity, weight status andneighborhood environmentwalkability and incomebetween dog owners and

non-dog owners. The studyfound that dog owners in theSeattle, Wash. andBaltimore, Md. Regions, who regularly walked theirpets had lower Body MassIndex (BMI) scores.

The study also tookinto account the walkabilityof the neighborhoods. Theyfound that dog owners weremore likely to live in higherincome and more walkableneighborhoods than non-dog owners.

“Encouraging dogwalking among owners whodo not regularly walk themcould promote improvedhealth,” said Dori E.Rosenberg, lead author ofthe study. “More dogwalking appears to be ahealth benefit of living inwalkable neighborhoods.”

Join the Mission ofCommunity West Foundation

Caring For Our NeighborsThis past year Community West Foundation gave $3,350,716 to our community, supporting Fairviewand Lutheran Hospitals and charitable organizations providing direct service to the needy. Here are

some examples of the important ways Community West Foundation impacts our community.

A Shelter of Compassion and HopeAs the largest men’s shelter in Ohio, Lutheran

Metropolitan Ministry’s 2100 Lakeside EmergencyHomeless Shelter provides support to over 3,000 meneach year who are homeless. Some have been on thestreets for years. Others are struggling because ofunforeseen and difficult life circumstances. In 2010,

Changing Lives and Getting ResultsThroughout its history, the Lakewood Christian Service Center

has addressed the needs of Lakewood, Rocky River and Westlakecitizens who are hungry, threatened with homelessness, jobless andother crises. The Center provides emergency food assistance, homeless prevention assistance, case management, advocacy withhousing, utilities and public assistance, as well as referrals toorganizations and agencies for specific additional services.

The Community West Foundation provided a $30,000 grant tothe Lakewood Christian Service Center for Operating Support

that will provide fortwo significant staffadditions: a FoodService Coordinatorto ensure the Service Center can meet the growing need for foodin light of declining federal and county funding, and a LicensedSocial Worker who will make an impact on the ongoing casemanagement services.

Clients come to the Center for onsite support for tenant/landlordissues, food stamp applications, emergency home energy assistanceand free legal advice for civil issues. Residents in need could notask for better advocacy and support – all close to home!

more men were served by the shelter than ever before. The heart of this ministry is the support,

structure, and connections to housing the menreceive that is so necessary for recovery from themany issues related to homelessness, includingunemployment, addiction, and many forms of mental

illness, and to move them to self-sufficiency.Community West Foundation offered $30,000 for

the Work Initiatives Program to help the men obtainmarketable skills, and eventually be placed in full orpart time employment. Grant funding also supportedPortraits of Homelessness, an exhibit of personal

struggles, stories, and photos of 40 residentsof the 2100 Lakeside Homeless Shelter. Thiscollection is the work of Lydia Bailey, VolunteerCoordinator at the shelter. Her project is alabor of love and a forum to raise awareness, advocacy, and funding for homelessness.

It is inspiring to see the miracles Godworks in the lives of these men every day.Portraits of Homelessness first opened onJanuary 8, 2010 at Cleveland State University’sMaxine Goodman Levin College of UrbanAffairs. To view some of the portraits checkout www.portraitsofhomelessness.com.

one-third of the world is well-fed, one third is under-fedand one third is starving.

An affordable solution, the Easy Step™ costs afraction of expensive walkin bathtubs and takes onlyone day to install. Walk intubs typically requiretearing out the old bathtub, removing walls, andperforming extensiveplumbing modifications. Inaddition, walk in tubs usesignificant amounts of waterand take time to fill andempty while the user waitsin the tub.

“What care giversreally like about the EasyStep™ is its simplicity andthe speed in which we canmake the installation,” saysGorski. “A homeowner can

be using their tub the sameday we do the installation.”

Miracle Method canalso install safety grab bars, hand held shower nozzles, curved shower rods andeven slip resistant tubsurfaces. “Our goal,”according to Gorski, “is toprovide a safer bathroomenvironment for our elderlycustomers which will allowthem to stay independentand live in their own homeslonger.”

“Another advantage tothe Easy Step™ besidesprice over expensive walk-in tubs, is that if theremoved piece is saved,”says Gorski, “it can bereplaced at a later date andyou’ll never know theconversion had been made.”This is a welcome feature

for family members whomay be faced witheventually selling the house.Unlike major walk-in ordoor tub installations, theability to return thebathroom to normal makesthe house easier to sell.“Nobody wants to buy ahouse that requires theexpense and mess ofremoving a bulky walk-inbathtub that you don’t wantor need”, adds Gorski.

Gorski offers advice tosenior citizens and theirfamily caregivers lookingfor easier bathtub access.Avoid high-pressure salespeople who won’t quoteprices over the phone andalways have someone withyou to help you make thebest decision for yoursituation. Avoid solutions

that will not only costthousands to install, butthousands to replace.

Many Easy Step™customers also use MiracleMethod’s refinishingprocess to change the colorof a dated tub and tile at thesame time. “Having all thework done at once allows usto pass on cost savings. Werealize that many of ourelderly customers are onfixed incomes and we wantto make this experienceeasy, timely andaffordable,” says Gorski.

A lifelong Clevelandresident, Gorski iscommitted to providing thehighest quality work. Hisoffice not only offers theEasy Step™, but surfacerefinishing for bathtubs, tile, vanities and kitchen

countertops, all with a five-year guarantee. To learnmore, log on towww.miraclemethod.com/cleveland or call 216 671-3444 for a free, no pressurein home appointment.

to a reader who sent this version of a Sunday School songupdated to remind folks of every age to keep the faith:

JESUS LOVES MEJesus loves me, this I know,

Though my hair is white as snowThough my sight is growing dim,

Still He bids me trust in Him.

VILLAGER BEATContinued from page 2

Yes, Jesus loves me....Yes, Jesus loves me...Yes, Jesus loves me, for the Bible tells me so.

Though my steps are oh, so slow,With my hand in His I’ll go

On through life, let come what may,He’ll be there to lead the way.

When the nights are dark and long,In my heart He puts a song..Telling me in words so clear,“Have no fear, for I am near.”

“If you think this is neat, please pass it on to yourfriends,” writes our friend. “If you do not pass it on, nothingbad will happen, but you will have missed an opportunityto ‘reach out and touch’ a friend or a loved one.
