Mathias Thulmann Witch Hunter Mathias Thulmann is one of the most respected templars serving within the Order of Sigmar. Deeply devoted to the Sigmarite faith, personally loyal to Grand Theogonist Volkmar, Thulmann is a determined and committed adversary of the Ruinous Powers. Armed with intense religious conviction and almost unshakeable courage, for over a decade he has served the Order of Sigmar tracking down the fell forces festering within the domains of the Empire. Thulmann’s personality is at odds with the almost sociopathic zealots many within the Empire believe all witch hunters to be. He is cultured and educated, with a keen interest in works of art. A strong sense of duty and morality rules him, governed by a very real conception of himself and the Order of Sigmar as guardians of the Empire and its citizens. At the same time, he can be utterly ruthless and merciless in the execution of his duties. Whatever compassion he might feel for innocents that have been corrupted by the touch of Chaos, he will pursue his duty no matter what it calls upon him to do. Sentimentality is something a witch hunter can ill afford and rarely has he allowed it to stay his hand. A deeply moral man, Thulmann’s mind is constantly troubled by the ugly things his profession calls upon him to do. Even his intense faith in Sigmar and the knowledge that his work is a necessary evil is not enough to completely silence the guilt some of his deeds make him feel. Yet, for all his inner turmoil, Thulmann understands that the hardest decisions to live with are also the ones that are the most important to make, and takes pride in finding the strength to overcome even his darkest doubts when the need arises. However, deep within his psyche is another kind of despair, a wound so deep within his soul that it will remain with him to the grave. The death of his wife and daughter set Thulmann upon the path of the witch hunter, and that tragedy has never relinquished its hold upon him. Nightmares revisit that trauma almost every time he closes his eyes. Sometimes circumstance or surrounding will suggest the tragedy so forcibly to him that the witch hunter is momentarily overcome by a waking delusion, a horrific retreat by his mind to the moment when his old life was destroyed forever. Such attacks are rare, but Thulmann is not always capable of easily breaking their hold upon him. Standing just over six feet in height, Mathias Thulmann presents an appearance that is at once both imposing and refined. He always dresses in the finest clothing he can find – silk shirts with gold embroidery, softest calfskin gloves and the most stylish riding boots a province can provide. The witch hunter commandeers rooms at the finest inns and dines upon the best food. Thulmann makes a point of these ostentatious displays of privilege and prosperity, feeling it important that the common folk of the Empire understand that the rewards for devotion and service to Sigmar are real and tangible. He is realist enough to understand that he is as likely to evoke envy as he is inspiration by such displays, but if it strengthens the faith of even one man, he is content. Among the finery of his clothes, the accoutrements of his position as a witch hunter stand out. The dark cloak and tall, wide brimmed hat are common affectations of the Order of Sigmar, almost the unofficial uniform of the witch hunters. Thulmann’s lean, almost predatory face lends itself well to his profession, giving him a suspicious, hawklike air. Thulmann is never without his longsword, a silverplated blade that has been blessed by no less an authority than the Grand Theogonist himself. A pair of blackpowder pistols crafted by the finest gunsmiths in Nuln compliment his temporal armament. A wellworn copy of the Deus Sigmar, several vials of water from the font of the Great Cathedral, and a small silver hammer icon given to him by his father, the late Lector of Bechafen, serve him when more esoteric weapons are called for. Thinking of his lost wife, Thulmann named the blade 'Anya' in her honour. The weapon served its new owner well through the years, dealing Sigmar's justice to the foul abominations lurking in the shadows of the Empire. Following the destruction of the Khaelhermanir cult, Thulmann was summoned before the Grand Theogonist himself to be recognized for his bravery and the service he had performed for the temple. During the ritual, Grand Theogonist Volkmar personally blessed Thulmann's blade, imbuing it with properties deadly to the creatures of Old Night. Streng Interrogator Amoral sadist, wanton drunkard and womanizer, Streng’s brutish appearance reflects well the thuggish mentality of the man himself. Irreverent, hedonistic and fiercely individualistic, Streng has never refuted his employer’s admonishment that he has ‘a cess pit where most men have a soul.’ The mercenary cares little what others think of him, so long as he has gold in his pocket and ale in his belly. Amoral sadist, wanton drunkard and womanizer, Streng’s brutish appearance reflects well the thuggish mentality of the manhimself. Irreverent, hedonistic and fiercely individualistic, Streng has never refuted his employer’s admonishment that he has ‘acess pit where most men have a soul.’ The mercenary cares little what others think of him, so long as he has gold in his pocketand ale in his belly.

valuable to Thulmann. Streng’s inability to empathise with others ensures that the thugwill not hesitate to carry out even the most unpleasant of orders – and in the grimprofession of witch hunting there is no lack of unpleasant deeds that must be done.Streng’s rough, direct manner is the opposite of Thulmann’s cultured and urbanepersonality, an open threat beside the witch hunter’s more subtle methods. Themercenary also possesses a marked degree of personal courage, something born morefrom his habit of living for the moment rather than some carefully concealed reservoirof valour deep within him.

Streng stands 5’10”, but his broad shoulders and solid frame make him appearsomehow squat and stocky. He keeps his dirty brown hair in the bowlshaped cutcommon among country communities, his beard is a scraggly growth that does little tosoften his wolfish air. Streng’s face is that of any backalley bully, his weasellike eyesgleaming wickedly from beneath his thick brow, his mouth almost always pursed in acruel smile. The thug’s raiment is unkempt, his leather hauberk often dusty from theroad, his garments patched and stained, bespeaking only the most casual attempts atmaintenance. With his weapons, however, the mercenary is anything but casual,cleaning and polishing them with the devotion that was drilled into him during his yearswith the army of Ostermark. A gleaming sword can be a best friend in battle, especiallysince it might distract a foe from seeing the knee driving toward his groin.

CaptainJusticar Ehrhardt  Black Guardsman of Morr

Rudolf Ehrhardt left behind him many years as a professional soldier when he joined the Black Guard of Morr and devoted himselfto the service of the god of death. Physically imposing even before joining the ranks of Morr’s elite temple knights, the steadyregime of training the Black Guard demanded of him enhanced his strength and endurance to prodigious levels. Already a battlehardened veteran many times over, the templars instilled in Ehrhardt an unwavering discipline, a fearless devotion to Morr’stemple and its priesthood. With the morbid strictures of the temple drilled deep into his heart and soul, there were few terrorsthe world could offer him. Like any servant of Morr, Ehrhardt was, in many ways, more dead than alive anyway. What fear couldstill strike a man who considered himself already consigned to the gardens of his grim god?

Ehrhardt is CaptainJusticar of Wurtbad, the highest ranking knight of Morr in the city. He is a stalwart fighter and a skilledswordsman, employing his massive blade with devastating effect. Encased within the midnight black armour of his order, cloakedin the dark mantle of Morr’s priesthood, Ehrhardt is an intimidating figure, his mere presence is unsettling to those around him.After years in the service of Morr, Ehrhardt’s emotions have largely atrophied, leaving him almost completely without compassionfor his fellow man. Death claims everyone in the end, after all. Ehrhardt is a man driven by purpose, but it is purpose withoutfeeling. Only when pursuing those who have profaned the sancitity of Morr’s realm does CaptainJusticar Ehrhardt’s disciplinedcontrol slip, releasing a wrath terrible to behold.

Ehrhardt stands a menacing 6’ 9”, his muscular frame and broad shoulders adding to his intimidating appearance. Ehrhardt keepshis head shaved after the fashion of Morr’s Black Guard. His face is hard and craggy, weathered by his long years fighting as amercenary beneath foreign skies. His steel armour is painted black, the sombre robes of a priest of Morr worn tabard fashionabove the plate mail. The massive great helm Ehrhardt wears serves to increase his already imposing height and obscure eventhe last semblance of humanity about the man. The Black Guardsman’s massive sword is commonly lashed across his back.

 Lajos Dozsa  Strigany 'Merchant'

From the earliest age, Lajos Dozsa was called thief, liar and worse by those around him. In Reikland, the lot of the vagabondStrigany was a hard one, greeted with suspicion and hostility wherever their caravans might travel. Even Strigany children werenot spared the scorn of the villagers and townsfolk, cursed openly and kicked from the streets like scavenging curs. The fact thatmost Strigany were decent, honest people who would happily lend themselves to whatever work they could find was not enoughto counter the folk wisdom that preceded them. To the country folk of the Empire, the entire Strigany breed was no better thanroaming wolves.

Lajos decided not to fight the popular perception of the Strigany. Instead he embraced it. If everyone thought he was a thief,then a thief he would be! He soon found he had a glib tongue and an insinuating personality that allowed him to quickly cultivatetrust in others, despite his Strigany origins. He also found that swindling was a much safer way to part people from their wealththan outright thievery. Lajos was always keen to avoid bloodshed, especially his own. A few years after leaving his family, Lajosestablished himself as a travelling merchant, plying his dubious tinwares all across the backwoods villages and towns of Reikland.Of course, there were always those few who never did get past the Strigany tint to his skin. Fortunately for Lajos, a witch hunternamed Mathias Thulmann was on hand to keep things from going too far in one backwater hamlet. Of course, now the witchhunter sometimes asks Lajos to return the favour – something Lajos quickly figured out was equally unsafe.

Lajos Dozsa is a short, fat little man, with black hair and bulging eyes. He likes to dress expensively, but has poor taste inclothes, often wearing a mismatched outfit that others find humorous. The Strigany long ago did away with complex concepts likemorality and piety. He still prays to his old Strigany gods on occasion, but they seldom listen. Ranald seems to pay a bit moreattention, but sometimes Lajos wonders if the god is playing a trick on the thief rather than his adversaries. Gold is a bit safer totrust one’s faith to, and Lajos is constantly devising new schemes to display that faith. Just so long as they are reasonably safe.You can’t enjoy gold from the end of a rope.
