a WorD From Your boarD oF DIreCtors

On November 03, 2016, the Board of Directors met with Architect, Michael Bern, to review and approve the final detailed design documents that Michael has developed relative to the proposed Oakmont Clubhouse Remodel Project. This review was the next step in the process to develop actual costs from licensed contractors for the proposed Project and provide the City of Beaumont Planning Department a set of plans for review and approval. It is important to note that no changes have been made to the overall Project design following the presentations that were made to Solera members in March 2016. Design renderings for the major elements of the Project have been on display in the main room of the Clubhouse for member review.

Contractors are being selected to prepare bids for the Project. These contractors are fully licensed with considerable professional experience relative to construction and remodeling structures like our Oakmont Clubhouse. Each contractor is being offered the opportunity to tour the Solera site accompanied by Michael and will be provided a set of plans for the Project. The Board will decide on a contractor that can provide the Association members with the best solution that meets the requirements developed to enhance the Oakmont Clubhouse and resolve deficiencies inherent in the original design. The Board has requested that the contractor’s bids be submitted in early December. The bids are to include the following cost breakdowns:

• NewMailroom(SeparateCost)• Oakmontroomexpansion(SeparateCost)• Total Project cost including the Office expansion

and internal relocations.

This Project is the largest undertaking that any Solera Board has proposed and, additionally, involves a significant financial investment for the Association. While Capital Improvement Funding is already available for this Project, the actual costs will not be determined until the Board receives the contractor’s bids and can review them. No decision will be made by the Board relative to this Project without presenting the facts to the members and the options that are available to achieve the Project goals. It is important that the members are aware and understand the overall scope and financial status of the Project because even though Capital Improvement funds are available per our Governing Documents it will take a membership vote to approve spending more than 5 percent of the Association’s Annual Operating Budget on the Project.

The Board will continue to keep members informed relative to this Project as more details become available.

Solera Chanukah Menorah Lighting

This year, the first night of Chanukah falls on December 24, 2016 (Christmas Eve). Unfortunately, the Clubhouse will technically be closed. Consequently, we will not be able to hold our annual potluck menorah lighting ceremony/celebration for the community. However, Administration has graciously given us permission to have

Security open the Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. for each of the 8 nights of Chanukah so we can say the blessings and light the Menorah.

We look forward to having our anual fun potluck celebration/ceremony next year on the first night of Chanukah which will be Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

New Year’s Stuffed Cabbage Rolls1 large head cabbage1 can (28 ounces) tomato sauce1 bottle Heinz chili sauce2 pounds ground pork1 cup uncooked rice1 cup sauerkraut, drained2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced2 tablespoons brown sugar1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cut out the core of the cabbage and parboil it in a large pot of water until the leaves are tender. Drain and cool. Then separate the leaves carefully. Mix the tomato and chili sauces together. Pour about one cup in the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish.

Take some of the large outer leaves of the cabbage and cover the bottom of the casserole. Mix the ground pork with the rice, sauerkraut, apples, brown sugar and pepper. Lay out a cabbage leaf, and cut the thick stem area to make it easier to roll. Place a one-quarter cup of the pork mixture at the base of the leaf and roll up loosely, tucking in the sides as you go to create a neat bundle.

Place the roll in the casserole and continue with the remaining cabbage and filling. Pour the remaining sauce over the rolls and cover tightly. Bake at 350 degrees for two hours. Remove the cover and bake for another 30 minutes to concentrate the sauce. Makes about 16.

If you have a recipe you would like to share, submit it to [email protected] no later than the 10th of the month for review and consideration.

american Flag maintenance tips:The American flag needs maintenance in order to preserve its vibrant display. The homeowners association would like to offer residents a few tips/suggestions for maintaining the American flag for display outside of your home.

Keep a close eye on your flags when displaying them during the winter, as the unforgiving cold and ruthless wind can quickly take a toll on your flags.

If you notice the condition of your flag is deteriorating, take it down quickly as possible in order to make proper repairs or to dispose of properly.

If the American flag is damaged beyond repair, it is important to properly retire it. Dropping the flag off at the administration office is recommended so it can be properly disposed of by the Veteran’s Flag Brigade.Purchase a two ply polyester American flag. This flag is made of heavy duty materials that allow for maximum durability.

Living in Beaumont has its share of harsh weather. Consider having a few flags on hand in order to preserve them longer.

If displaying your flag at night, the flag should be illuminated.

For more than 200 years, our country’s military, firemen, police, and other service personnel have practiced these measures faithfully, treating our flag with the highest esteem. This is one way we can meet the high standard they have set. Solera thanks you!

soLera anCestrY GroupDue to the Christmas holiday, the Solera Ancestry Group will be meeting on Friday, December 16.

When researching your ancestors and you come to a dead end, don’t give up! One of the biggest road blocks when researching is when you have an ancestor with a common name. Keep in mind that even in the early to late 1800’s many folks were not schooled. They could neither read nor oftentimes write or spell. Often the census collector would spell a person’s name phonetically. Sometimes folks weren’t even sure exactly when they were born.

Here are some hints when you can go no further in your search: For example…using the name “Johnston.” Check for transpositions (i.e. Johntson), check for misspellings such as “Johnson.” If the person’s name was Francis H. Johnston, be open to looking at Frances Johnson, Johntson, and other variations of both names. If you believe the person was born in Butler, Pennsylvania, for example, be sure to look at the surrounding areas as well. Check

every census from the time the last known relative with that name was born. It is possible the middle initial is either the father’s first name or the mother’s maiden name. You might travel to the town itself and visit the cemetery where the last known relative is laid. See if there aren’t other folks with the same last name buried close by.

Besides visiting historical centers and genealogical libraries in towns where your relatives have lived, visit small businesses, churches, and family owned businesses in the area to see if they recognize the name. Borrow an old phone book and call strangers and ask to speak to someone with the last name of the relative. For assistance call John Christiansen at 845-5187 or Lynda Dostal at 769-9571.

bereaVement supportIt’s not too late to join the current Bereavement Support Group which will run through the end of January. bon appetItBe it parmesan, goat, cheddar, or cotija, cheese was the topic of the day at our November 4 event, “It’s a Gouda day.” The Oakmont Room was adorned with striking wine colored tablecloths that complimented the grape and cheese filled wine glass centerpieces. Eighty members and guests sampled many delicious homemade recipes, all containing some kind of cheese. We enjoyed dishes like apple cheese mold, cream cheese tortillas, potato cheese casserole, pumpkin cheesecake, Mexican quiche, caprese skewers, and meatballs with ricotta cheese just to name a few. Thank you to all our members who graciously volunteered to bring a yummy dish for all to enjoy. It truly was a “Gouda day.” We also cannot pass up the chance to thank Lane Joel for taking all our event pictures throughout the year; he always does such an amazing job! Kudos to all our members who have stepped up to help set up and clean up at our events, we are so grateful.

We also elected our new 2017 board. We congratulate Anne Zimmerman, President, Mary Mehlman, Vice President, Sheila Minniti, Treasurer, and Theresa Lantz, Secretary. We are very excited for this new team to come on board, thank them for running, and know they’ll do an outstanding job!

Our final event for 2016 will be our annual Holiday luncheon to be held on Friday, December 2, at Billy Reed’s restaurant in Palm Springs. We are looking forward to a festive day filled with holiday cheer, great fun, comradery, and delicious food.

KnIttInG/CroChetInG CLub(Yakky Yarnovers)

Did you know that while there are hand knitting, loom knitting and machine knitting, there is only hand crocheting? A crocheter’s movements are so intricate that nobody has been able to create a machine that can duplicate them. There

is something in the fashion industry that is called a crochet machine, but it does not actually make the same stitches as those made in crochet. They create blanket stitches that mimic crochet but upon closer examination it is easy to see that this isn’t really crochet.

It has been said that crochet uses up significantly more yarn than knitting, but many people have tested this and it remains controversial as to whether or not it’s true. What is true is that it is much easier to correct your mistakes in crocheting.

Originally, knitting and crocheting projects were quite different. However, the range of both materials and advanced crochet techniques such as Tunisian crochet makes it possible for crocheters to create knit-like fabrics.

mahJonGMahjong is an ancient Chinese game known by many names. The game consists traditionally of 144 domino-like tiles bearing figures that represent the elements. Most games follow traditional rules with slight variations. The traditional Chinese Mahjong game involves two setup steps: (1) Building the

Wall, which involves placing all the tiles face down, shoulder-to-shoulder on the playing area, and (2) Breaking the Wall, where players roll 2 dices and choose their tiles. The object of the game is to collect 14 tiles in particular match sets. Four players are required to play a game. In this game, players must put together a complete “hand” that consists of combinations of three of a kind, four of a kind, tiles in sequence of three numbers, and a pair. When a player completes the “hand,” a call of “Mahjong” must be announced to claim the win. A score is recorded at the completion of each game. The more difficult a complete “hand” is constructed, the higher the scores.

Mahjong has long been a popular pastime all over the world. In addition to being a fun way to socialize, mahjong is also a way of keeping the elderly mind sharp and improving cognitive function.

Our Solera Mahjong group meets on every Tuesday at the Clubhouse for a two hour play between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. We play traditional Chinese style Mahjong. It is both entertaining and challenging, for each player tries not only to win a game, but also to build a higher score at the completion of the game. We welcome anyone interested (novice or experienced) in playing to join us on Tuesdays. If instructions are needed, our members will be happy to offer assistance. Our contact person is Louis Hickman at (951) 769-3534 or Dr. Frank Tsai at (951) 378-4800.

the QuILt Group The quilters are busy with our mystery quilts. Each month we are given a new clue. It is interesting to watch the pattern emerge.

The pillowcases our group made were delivered to the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Over 50 pillowcases were donated.

We meet each Monday in the Craft Room at 12:00 noon. All are welcome to join us.

obtaining their Technician Level Ham Radio License. The group now has 10 licensed ham radio operators involved; many that have been trained to setup and operate the HOA Ham Radios that will be used in the case of an emergency.

The group meets regularly on each Friday at 8:00 a.m. in the Arts & Crafts Room. Currently we are discussing the different types of radios that are available, how a “ham” can advance his/her skill levels with different or better equipment, how to program our radios, and any other topic that will benefit the group. Any licensed ham radio operator or anyone interested in this hobby are encouraged to attend our meetings. If you are interested in becoming a licensed ham radio operator, we can help. In addition, we have setup a local NET that meets “on the air” every Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. This allows the “hams” in the group to talk to each other and test their equipment and skills … and … just have some fun and interesting conversations. This NET is also designed to create a system that can be used during an emergency when other means of communication are not available. If you are a licensed operator and have the equipment, please feel free to join us on the simplex frequency of 146.550.

oaK VaLLeY rV CLubCalico and Pahrump are now in our rear view mirror and our sights are set on Jurupa Regional Park. Camping dates are December 5– 9 and a good time is expected as usual. Happy hour will be Monday, Tuesday the Science Museum, and Wednesday we will walk Mt. Rubidoux. A few of us, however, would rather sit and guard our campsites then walk Mt. Rubidoux. A potluck lunch will be enjoyed by the members and it’s always fun to see what treats are in store.

Not to be outdone by Jurupa we will barely get home before we start enjoying our Christmas Party on December 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the Oakmont Clubhouse. Juan Pollo will be catering our dinner, and we will then take off on fire trucks to view the beautiful Christmas lights of Solera. Several trips have been suggested for the coming year and more information will follow in January. Our meetings are the first Thursday of even months in the Oakmont Clubhouse at 1:00 p.m. and our outings usually are in the odd months.

Tip of the month:Be sure to put a sign in your window that your “family” member (pet) is inside. Create a letter giving the RV park “in case of emergency” instructions which include our children’s’ contact information. Always notify our emergency contacts of the name of the RV Park where we are staying. Nearly everywhere we go, we are both in the vehicle. Emergencies

come up more often than we would like to admit. Don’t limit this letter to RV Parks but also carry one in your purse or vehicle. Better safe than sorry.

Bob Hoffecker is president and his phone is #951-833.5357. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

soLera paper CraFtersThere will only be one meeting this month and that will be on Thursday, December 8 at 1:00 p.m. in the Arts and Crafts Room at the Clubhouse.

As we come to the close of the year, Vallarie and I would like to thank you all for your participation and support over the last twelve months. Some of you have been with us since the beginning (5 years) and some are newcomers; just know that we love you all. You are a fantastic group of ladies.

We are always looking for new members and invite you to stop by and check us out whenever you can. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. and on the 3rd Saturday at 10:00 a.m., when the calendar permits.

In January, our first meeting will be held on the 27th, due to the Clubhouse being closed for two weeks for cleaning and repairs.

Vallarie and I hope you have a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

If you have any questions, please contact Patty Grana at 769-4916 or Vallarie Clegg at 231-3991.

sIppers The holidays are here and we are celebrating with wonderful events. In November we took a bus trip to Temecula and enjoyed wine tasting, tour of Oak Mountain’s Cave and wine making facility, lunch at Oak Mountain Winery and had time to shop Old

Town Temecula for special gifts.

December 3 is our Holiday Party, and we look forward to a great dinner and dance party in the Clubhouse. We

have food catered by Tony Directo and music by DJ Mike Gonzo. I’m sure it will be a wonderful

evening for Sippers to share some holiday spirit.

As the year comes to an end we can look back on the many wonderful events. We’ve had at Solera and the friendships we have here. This is truly a special community that offers us all a place to feel connected and supported by great friendships.

To continued good times and good company--Cheers!

By Margarett Rogers The holidays are here! Solera clubs and groups have special holiday gatherings and we go and go. My favorite break during this time of year is reading, and I will go to the Clubhouse and pick up a holiday book from our wonderful donated collection. I hope

to see many of you perusing our holiday books and picking out a sunny holiday story or looking at some of the current classics such as David Baldacci’s The Christmas Train.

Have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

soLera soLosSolera Solos mission is to promote a fun/uplifting environment for those of us who are single/solo to be able to make new and enjoy old friends, as well as join in countless activities without the necessity of a partner.

We had 28 attendees at the presentation of the changes in the Medicare Program for 2017. Our presenter, Paula Ramos of Prospect Insurance Services, did an outstanding job as usual. It appears that the major change that is coming is the elimination of the “donut hole.” Our night out at Tukwet Canyon was delightful. Very good food was enjoyed by 24 Solos whose company can’t be beat. Look forward to doing this again.

Our festive Holiday Luncheon was at Marla’s. Our White Elephant Gift Exchange always brings lots of laughs. What a wonderful way to start this beautiful season!

support our troopsBy Jesse Donardt

First, to the unsung heroes, who drop off items in the collection box at my front door, THANK YOU! You help so much. So often, I will hear something at my door, but by the time I get there, you are driving away. October through December is truly a busy time. When I return home to Solera, usually the second week of October, it is a mad rush to get organized for shipping. November is the time to be including blank Christmas cards, for the soldiers to have time to mail them home to friends and family. It’s also a good time to start sending any decorations. Solera residents often take advantage of the “after Christmas sales” to obtain decorations. We then store them for the next year. This will likely be the first year, in quite a while, that our community did not write Christmas cards to send to our soldiers. This time consuming process needs to be started in November, to mail the cards no later than mid-December. I have been trying to bring in new supporters from our community. Our small core group works so hard. I posted a request for someone to head up the card writing campaign on our Neighbor to Neighbor website. No one stepped up. No doubt, some of the community at large are part of those unsung heroes that I spoke of at the beginning of the article. We just sent a package and received a reply from the grandson of Solera residents Babe and Carol Brown. He is living in the barracks at a Navy Training Center. If you have a friend or relative, living in the barracks stateside or anywhere overseas, let me know at 996 Ironwood Rd., [email protected], H: (951) 845-9028, C: (951) 892-6635.

Thank you for caring.

As we prepare for the coming Holidays and celebration of the New Year, I stop to consider the writing of the annual family Christmas letter. Most years this task is a joy as we share God’s handiwork in our lives with extended family and friends. But this year.....well, this year if I saw me sharing what life has been like on the Ellen DeGeneres or Oprah afternoon TV shows, I’m not sure I would even believe me!

Sometimes life packs such a wallop of dramatic surprises that words don’t even begin to describe it - and truth be told, maybe words shouldn’t even try! I cannot deny God’s hand of many blessings over our lives the past year and more, nor can I deny the reality that he has, and is, bringing us all through some head-spinning challenges and changes. I wonder what your Christmas letter looks like this year--was it an easy year, or a hang-on-for-dear-life kind of year? If you had a roller coaster kind of year like me, we can take heart that we are not alone!

From our family to yours, our sincerest wishes for the Merriest of Holiday Joys, with all the best for you and your family in the coming New Year.

“May Light always surround you;Hope kindle and rebound you.

May your Hurts turn to Healing;Your Heart embrace Feeling.

May Wounds become Wisdom;Every Kindness a Prism.

May Laughter infect you;Your Passion resurrect you.

May Goodness inspire your Deepest Desires.

Through all that you Reach For, May your arms Never Tire.

The end is in sight…thank goodness!!! Being a news junkie, I have had the TV or radio set on cable news or NPR for most of 2016. Considering the highly contentious campaign that has been playing out over the last few weeks, specifically, I am very relieved that the nastiness and exhausting, unproductive nonsense of the election is finally coming to an end. Regardless of your feelings about who did or didn’t win, just not having to hear the negative messages 24/7 is a welcome breath of fresh air. I think most of us are ready to return to our happy but hectic holiday planning and preparations. So, let’s allow the warm jovial feelings and interactions with friends and neighbors replace all the unnecessary “noise” as we move into the end of the year festivities.

One way for me to do this is to focus on regular holiday routines; routines that haven’t changed since I was a kid. I make lists, plan to bake up a storm, pull out all of the decorations (please note - I didn’t say I put them up), organize all my rolls of holiday paper, tape, ribbons, bows, and gift stickers and then get too busy to wrap the gifts. So, following my regular routine, I rush out every year and purchase gift bags and tissue so I can quickly get the gifts under the tree at least two hours before the kids all roll in for Christmas. Finally, we leave the tree up until after New Year’s Day, and I am so looking forward to just sitting in the quiet of the moment with the tree lights twinkling and the fireplace glowing sipping mulled cider and just being still. These are my holiday routines to sooth the spirit, and after the raucous fall we have all had to put up with I’m more than ready to watch 2016 quietly end! Happy, Peaceful Holidays to ALL!!!

resIDents beWare!Recently we had intruders that entered our Solera neighborhood on the Westside in the early morning hours and went through unlocked cars on driveways, entered into the side doors of garages and went through vehicles and then stole a vehicle. Although we live in a gated community with a patrol vehicle that travels through our neighborhoods to observe and report questionable activity, unwanted visitors can still enter our property unnoticed. If you experience any theft, the first thing to do is report this activity to Beaumont Police and then notify the Gate attendant. They will notify management. For your safety please remember to lock your doors and your vehicles if parked on your driveway.

On December 24 Carter Dean will be 100 years young. He is vibrant, witty, has a keen memory and seems to be a man pleased with his life. He was married in 1942, and was married for fifty years when his wife passed away in 1992. He has two sons, one daughter and one grandchild, and they all live nearby. You might say “close family” is a contrib-uting factor to a long and happy life.

He was born in Buffalo, New York in 1916 and in 1921 his fam-

ily moved to Sunset Beach (next to Huntington Beach) with a population of 100. When he was 14, he caught a seal and turned it over to City officials. The City sold it to an aquarium and used the proceeds to throw a beach party for the whole town.

Carter joined the Army in 1938 and when they found he could type he was promoted to Corporal as a clerk. He was discharged in 1940 and then joined the Air Force that same year. During his 30-year career he attained ranks from Private to Chief Warrant Officer. He was an expert marksman in all weapons.

He was involved in three wars: World War II, Korean and Viet-nam wars. Among his medals are the Korea Action Medal and the Germany Occupation Medal. He was stationed in Germany for 4 years and Japan 3 years with his family. His job as sup-ply officer included making sure the bases got their aircraft elec-tronic supplies. His main job, especially during the wars, was to keep the planes in the air by ensuring the necessary supplies

were available to the flight crews. He also traveled to Guam, Spain, Morocco, Great Britain and worked in several Air Force Headquarters and the Air Force Academy.

In 1946, his wife wrote and told him that the Air Force would not let them come to Germany for a year because she had an infant. Well, that wasn’t going to work for Carter so he immediately resigned and came back to the States. However, four days later, they asked him to re-enlist and he did.

Carter says one of the highlights of his career was when he won the doubles handball match in the Pacific Military Handball Championship, which was a major annual event and winning was a really big deal.

He retired from the service in 1968 and spent his retirement years building additions to his home in Nuevo and enjoying his family. When asked how he came to know construction work he said, “I watch repairmen very closely and learn from what I see.” He says he’s learned all kinds of things from watching people work. That’s how it was done before Google! In 2003 he moved to Solera.

He attributes his longevity to his athletic endeavors over the years, playing many different sports, football, baseball, basket-ball, swimming and excelling at most of them. He is a non-smoker, and does not care for alcohol. After nine operations he lost an eye; otherwise he’s in pretty good shape.

In 2005 he decided to take up yet another sport. Pool! (Is that a sport?} He has learned to love the game, and he says he is an above average player and can keep up with the best of them with only one eye. No surprise there. Carter likes living in Solera and though not as active as he used to be, he still enjoys meeting up with his friends at the Clubhouse and shooting a round or two.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARTER!

On October 2, 2016, the Tennis Ladies of Solera gathered at Victor’s in Beaumont and helped Betty O’Connor celebrate 90 fabulous years. Betty has been our fearless, ever-faithful tennis leader for years. She still plays tennis and cheers us all on, and occasion-ally she can’t help but point out how we can improve. We love her for so many reasons. Happy birthday again Betty and many more!

CULTURAL/FUN EVENTS IN OUR AREA

be prepareD By Dennis Rice, EPEAC Chairman

On November 10, the Emergency Preparedness Educational Advisory Committee (EPEAC) hosted a very successful presentation by two graduate students from the UCR Earth Sciences Department on the topic of EARTHQUAKES. This well-attended educational presentation and subsequent discussion provided a basis for understanding the science of earthquakes, let us know that we are surrounded by major ACTIVE fault systems, and stressed the importance for BEING PREPARED for a substantial earthquake in our area; one that is 30 years overdue! A handout from that meeting that gives some very important tips on what to do “During An Earthquake” is at the back of this Gazette for you to “tear off” and keep on hand.

EPEAC cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared for an EARTHQUAKE. Even if an powerful earthquake may not make your home uninhabitable,

• youmayverywellloseelectricalpowertoyourhome,or• yourwatersupplymaybecontaminatedoryoumaynothave

any water at all, or• youmaysufferphysicallyfromfallingobjectsinyourhome,

or• theremaynotbeanystoresopenoraccessiblewhereyou

can get supplies.

That is why it is important to make sure that you have an emergency kit with an adequate supply of food, water, first aid supplies, etc. It is recommended that you BE PREPARED to take care of yourself for at least 3 days. First responders will be swamped with emergency calls and will prioritize schools, hospitals, areas where the damage is greatest and may not be able to aid Solera residents for days.

To help you to prepare for an earthquake or other emergencies, EPEAC will continue to publish articles, host presentations, and provide you with pamphlets and flyers. We have also created a website with useful information at www.SoleraEP.com. At this time, pamphlets from FEMA have been placed in the mailroom that provide basic emergency preparedness information to you. Pick up a flyer and BE PREPARED!

During An Earthquake From the Official website of the Department of Homeland Security

If you are inside a building: Stay where you are until the shaking stops. Do not run outside. Do not get in a doorway

as this does not provide protection from falling or flying objects, and you may not be able to remain standing.

Drop down onto your hands and knees so the earthquake doesn’t knock you down. Drop to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!)

Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from falling debris. o If you are in danger from falling objects, and you can move safely, crawl for

additional cover under a sturdy desk or table. o If there is low furniture or an interior wall or corner nearby, and the path is clear,

these may also provide some additional cover. o Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could

fall, such as light fixtures or furniture. Hold on to any sturdy covering so you can move with it until the shaking stops. Stay

where you are until the shaking stops.

If getting safely to the floor to take cover won’t be possible:

Identify an inside corner of the room away from windows and objects that could fall on you. The Earthquake Country Alliance advises getting as low as possible to the floor. People who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices should lock their wheels and remain seated until the shaking stops. Protect your head and neck with your arms, a pillow, a book, or whatever is available.

If you are in bed when you feel the shaking:

If you are in bed: Stay there and cover your head and neck with a pillow. At night, hazards and debris are difficult to see and avoid; attempts to move in the dark result in more injuries than remaining in bed.

If you are outside when you feel the shaking:

If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. Once in the open, “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” Stay there until the shaking stops. This might not be possible in a city, so you may need to duck inside a building to avoid falling debris.

If you are in a moving vehicle when you feel the shaking:

If you are in a moving vehicle, stop as quickly and safely as possible and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that the earthquake may have damaged.
