SCHOOL OFFERSSRIRAMPURAMKIDS HOPE

Bangalore: Many of them

have witnessed horror at home. Aboy saw his uncle hanging fromthe ceiling after one morning. Agirl fled with her parents to aneighbouring state when the fatherwanted to escape from police. Some have even been witness torapes.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan-BBMP School in Srirampuram, west Bangalore, offers solace tothese students, who cope withpain.

Established three years ago,it’s the BBMP’s first CBSESchool. It has changed the entireneighbourhood and made childrenchange makers at home.

The senior students are in thethird grade and the most juniorare in LKG. They speak flawless

English. Some are trained by Fifacoaches — a luxury which evensome students of internationalschools don’t have.

Srirampuram, known for itsrowdies and robbers, is on thecusp of change.

“When the Bhavan wanted tostart a school in coordination withthe BBMP, we didn’t choose thelocality. Srirampuram was given tous. We have 98% attendance andfull attendance at the parentteacher meetings. The parents’criminal background doesn’t stop

"If we produce 25 wonderful persons from Srirampuram, our job is done,” says the

them from dreaming about theirchildren’s future,” says directorHN Suresh, who manages theschool.

”We seek police help duringthe admission season. Only 80children are admitted to nurseryas against over 600 applications.Every parent wants Their kid tobe admitted here, and we areunder tremendous pressure frompoliticians and local communityleaders,” Suresh adds.

The school has decided toadmit only one child from a family. But parents try to beat this rule.

It’s a people’s school, saysdirector ‘Teaching These KidsIs Amazing’

Those parents who havealready enrolled one child andwant another kid to study there, change their name in theadmission form. “We realized thetrick only after some days, but bythen the admission was over lastyear and we couldn’t send backthe kids. Now, we have mandatedthat each student has to give the

complete family photo and they’redisplayed in each class,” saidSuresh.

”We are neither a privatenor a government school. It’s apeople’s school. If we produce25 wonderful persons fromSrirampuram, our job is done,”he added. The young minds areexposed to the pleasant face ofthe world for the first time andencourage to have big dreams.Like 7-year-old Anitha Rabniwho wants to join the policeforce, and her classmateChaithanya R, in the thirdstandard, aims at treating oldpeople after she studies medicine.Harini S has set her goal to be anastronaut and is inspired by Indianorigin astronaut Sunita Williams.

For All Srirampuramresidents who want their kids tobe admitted to this school, theelection code of conduct hascome in the way. As it’s a BBMPschool, the code covers theschool and thus the 50% of seatsto be filled up by BBMP are onhold till May-end. “We have to

follow this. We know it’s toughfor parents. At the end of May,admission in other schools will beover and anxious parentswouldn’t know whether their kidswill get a seat here or not,” schoolauthorities said.” They come fromdifficult, unpleasant backgrounds.Sometimes we have to counselthem to make them happy. If theycry in the morning while coming toschool, by afternoon they forgetthe sorrow back home. They lovethe atmosphere here and parentshave also been encouraging,” saidVijaya Mahadevan, coordinator,Brindavan Education Trust, whotrains teachers and children here.“I’ve worked in manyinternational schools but thesatisfaction I get teaching thesekids is amazing. They’re fromvulnerable backgrounds but canabsorb any good thing you teachthem,” says Shubha Madan, administrator and schoolprincipal.

CHANGE AT HOME

• If you want to drop me offat school, don’t wear nighties and

lungis, say kids of this school totheir parents.

• Plastic covers are bannedat home.

• Attendance is a must forparent-teacher meetings.

• The school had a hugegarbage dump in front of thegate two years ago. Residentscomplained to the BBMP andmade sure garbage trucks didn’tcome near the school. Policespeak

Srirampuram was knownfor its rowdy elements. But itwon’t be the same anymore.Education can bring in reformationand this school sets an exampleB.L. Janardhan.
