Message from the President Another mild winter for the most part, hopefully will mean an early and mild spring for plein air painting. Be sure to check out our website’s new schedule this spring which is shared with us compliments of the Milwaukee Sketch Club. Our appreciative thanks to them as always. Winter has not stopped our members from preparing new work to meet the WWS exhibition schedule. Information on our Spring exhibition at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha can be found in this newsletter or on our website. I’ve spent some of my winter, as I know many of you have, exploring exhibitions in our nearby galleries. I hope you had an opportunity to see the MAM exhibition Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London. The Rembrandt self portrait was very impressive as were all of the paintings in the exhibition. There are many wonderful smaller galleries such as Katie Gingrass Gallery, Tory Folliard Gallery, The Portrait Gallery, Elaine Erickson Gallery, MIAD Galleries and many other college galleries to name a few. Art galleries in your community could become an exhibition opportunity for you. Most of them change their exhibitions often and probably would like to have you walk in their door and talk to them about the opportunity of having your work exhibited in their gallery. Perhaps some of you are able to spend part of your winter traveling and painting, if not we know how to make the best use of our studio space. I look forward to seeing you at the Anderson Art Center opening April 14 th . Steve Horvath Board Notes Our last Board Meeting was held on Saturday, February 9 and called to order by President Steve Horvath. Present were Bill Davis, Joyce Eesley, Steve Horvath and Kappy Schwab. Exhibits Chairperson, Judy Murphy’s report mentioned that the prospectus for our Spring Show at the Anderson Arts Center has been mailed. Membership Chairperson Karen Finerty mentioned that one new artist’s work will be presented at our Spring Show to be voted on by our membership. Be sure to look for the ballot box. Steve Horvath mentioned that our website has been updated and that members will again have the opportunity to revise their data in late spring. Any desired revisions should be forwarded to Steve. Fall Exhibit A wonderful exhibit at the Cedarburg Cultural Center October 21 – November 25. Our two prospective members were both voted in by our members. A hearty welcome to Elizabeth Ivers and Everett W. Powell. Guests viewing paintings at our Fall Show March 2013

Artist Profile Quick Sketch: Dan Simoneau By Steve Horvath This article is a continuation of a series of mini biographies of members as a way of introducing ourselves to each other and to our audience outside of WWS. Please see previous profiles in this series archived on our website.

Dan Simoneau in his studio Kenosha, Wisconsin, January 25, 2013 – Sometimes our route to creativity is a circuitous one. Such is the case with Dan Simoneau.

Dan is originally from Lewiston, Maine. He spent his formative years there showing an interest in art at a very young age. He started exhibiting when he was 14 years old. All of his fellow exhibitors were, of course, older than Dan. He saw them as ready-made mentors providing him with good suggestions and inspiration. He also joined local art association in High School that gave him further art exposure and helpful feedback.

Dan started college after graduating from High School in 1980. He enrolled in the Art Education program at the University of Southern Maine but soon found that he didn’t care for that particular program of study even though he wanted to teach. He then switched to the Fine Arts program in Pottery, and Print Making.

He needed to pay for his education so while

in college he landed a job in a local bank on the accounting side of the business. He graduated from college in 1984 but stayed on at the bank in accounting as he found his way into his artistic pursuits.

Buyouts and other business moves resulted in Dan moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana. There was more company restructuring ahead and by as early as 1992 Dan found himself in Toledo, Ohio working on the computer programming side of the accounting business.

After arriving in Toledo, and in his continual quest to connect to the art community, Dan joined the Spectrum Gallery at the Botanical Gardens where he could exhibit his work.

He submitted two pieces of work in the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition, an 85-year-old exhibition venue at the Toledo Museum of Art, and won an award. This really got his attention and motivated Dan even more toward his need to make art. Soon after he was juried into the Northwestern Ohio Watercolor Society to meet, mingle, and exhibit with other watercolorists. Meanwhile, his company would periodically send him back to Fort Wayne on business trips. It was on one of these trips that Dan met Len Iaquinta, an active member on the business side of Fort Wayne’s Artlink co-operative gallery, and they have been together ever since.

Dan and Len moved to Chicago in 1995 and Dan pursued a larger market area for developing his art. With a suggestion from Len, Dan pursued an ad from PeopleSoft in Chicago looking for instructors teaching implementation and usage of their financial software. This opportunity came to fruition and after settling in the North side of Chicago Dan connected with the Cornelia Arts Center and The Friends of the Arts group, a co-op of studios.

In 2000 Dan and Len decided to move to Kenosha for convenience of traveling to and from work. This led to Dan’s current job as a software consultant with the Revere Group, now known as NTT DATA.

Dan keeps himself totally immersed in

making art when he is not involved in his consulting responsibilities. He has competed nationally in art competitions with much success. He joined the Wisconsin Watercolor Society (WWS) about ten years ago and at the same time joined the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA) serving on their board as Membership Chair, Vice President, and served on the search committee for the TWSA museum search to find a permanent location for their annual exhibition. They ultimately settled on the Kenosha Public Museum.

Dan also served as Director of the co-op Artists Gallery in Racine for two years. He is now involved with the Lemon Street Gallery co-op in Kenosha and maintains a studio in Racine where he can paint, exhibit his work, and receive visitors by appointment to view his art. Dan has a long list of professional affiliations, exhibitions, and awards that confirm his commitment to making art.

Dan Simoneau, Marco, Watercolor

Dan is very proud of his most recent work,

‘Marco’, (See photo), which has just been accepted into the 146th Annual Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society in New York in April.

There were 140 works accepted out of 1100 submissions. Dan says that this watercolor was painted with one layer built on top of the other starting with a base color of yellow and continuing to build his color layers from there. Dan had this to say about his painting style, “because I love photorealism, I would painstakingly paint every detail in the scene. Thanks to an inspiring professor in college who taught watercolor and my independent study courses, I learned I could achieve the illusion of the same amount of detail with much less effort and I continue to paint in this looser style today”.

Dan also works in acrylic and received signature status in the International Society of Acrylic Painters in 2010.
