Principal’s Message The school is undergoing changes to its finance practices and processes.

We have our L Plates on! We will transition to the new NSW public schools’ finance system on 14th June 2016. Freeze on payments

• 3rd June 2016 - 15th June 2016, - NO online payments can be made.

• 15th June 2016 - online payments will be accepted as before

• 15th June 2016 - EFTPOS, cash and cheque payments will be available.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new finance system.

Our teachers are currently in the midst of the Semester 1 reporting and assessment cycle. Reports will come out in week 9 with an updated format and effort scale. The P&C have been involved in the consultation around the format and the clarification of the effort scale. The students have been busily dancing and moving in preparation for the Dance2bfit concert coming in a few weeks’ time. Mrs Hamshaw and I have been organising a seating plan ready for the release of tickets for parents and extended families. Details will come out shortly.

The weather has finally taken a Winter change and become cooler, particularly in the mornings. Please check that all clothing items are clearly labelled. Kindergarten 2017 – Please register your little one’s name with the office or let friends or family know who may have little ones ready to start school in 2017. Given our current enrolments, we will only be accepting in-zone enrolments. Out of zone applicants may apply, however are strongly advised to seek enrolment in their zoned school. Winter Uniform

Page 2: WIRREANDA WHISPER · Focus on Reading . Good readers use many strategies and reading behaviours to gain a deep meaning from the text. The attached prompt sheet is a handy list of

• Sports House Polo (sports days) • Black shoes • School Jumper/Bomber jacket • School broad brim hat

Boys:

• Grey pants • Blue shirt • White or grey socks

Girls:

• Royal blue pants/shorts/skort for the girls. • Senior Skirt • Navy/Black Stockings • Blue Shirt • White socks

Some parents choose blue track pants for boys on days that are not sports days, this is also acceptable. Regards, Philippa and staff Deputy Principal’s Message School Crosswalks I would like to remind students and families of the importance of using the Brocklesby and Ferodale Road crosswalks when leaving the school grounds. Our crosswalks are manned by qualified supervisors whose task it is to ensure the safety of our students when they are arriving and leaving school. If parents use these crosswalks with their children it sets a good example for days when children may have to walk to school independently. Cup of the Week Well done 5L and 6A for being awarded the Cup of the Week in weeks 5 and 6. The school focus is on resilience and both classes have demonstrated this through their ability to be flexible and adapt to changes throughout the day. Fun Friends The focus for Fun Friends lessons this week is ‘My Feelings’. The lessons work towards students identifying their own feelings and the feelings of others. It also reinforces that all feelings are normal and how students can practise to make happy feelings grow.

Books for Babies Two Wirreanda families were presented with a book for their new babies at our Week 5 Monday morning assembly. Kealey Lennon and Nic, Kai and Ashton Farrell accepted books on behalf of their new siblings, Zane and Zara. Remember to call into the office and let us know if you have a new baby at home so that we assist in developing a love of books and reading. Have a wonderful fortnight everyone. Focus on Reading

Good readers use many strategies and reading behaviours to gain a deep meaning from the text. The attached prompt sheet is a handy list of cues that you can use with your child when reading informative texts. Perhaps focus on one or two each time you approach a text with your child. When talking to your children about the types of text they read we refer to 3 general types: •informative - texts that give us information •imaginative - texts that represent ideas, feelings and mental images in words or visual images •persuasive - texts whose primary purpose is to put forward a point of view and persuade a reader. It is important to note that some texts are a mix of these 3 types. Kathie Colley Deputy Principal –Teacher Mentor

NOTES IN CIRCULATION • ICAS English & Maths Comp Yrs 3-6 • P&C Thompson’s Pie Drive Walking together to and from school Following some pedestrian traffic incidents in the past two weeks, we have popped a road safety reminder in. Plan your trip to school so you use pedestrian crossings where possible. Always hold your child’s hand. Children need your help to spot dangers such as vehicles coming out of driveways. They can also be easily distracted and wander into traffic. Avoid calling them from across the road. Talk with your children about Stop, Look, Listen and Think every time they cross the road.

• STOP ! one step back from the kerb. • LOOK ! for traffic to your right, left and

right again. • LISTEN ! for the sounds of approaching

traffic. • THINK ! whether it is safe to cross.

Young children can learn these safe pedestrian habits from you and continue them later on when they are old enough to travel alone. StarStruck Matinee StarStruck Final Tickets on Sale! Ticket sales end for our matinee performance this THURSDAY. Students - $36.00 each Parents - $42.00 each Seats are limited only 3 left ... and it is first in!

Our 2nd match was against Eleebana Public school and we defended well to keep them scoreless - one try to nil with Jai Holland scoring a great try off the back of some good lead up work by our forwards. Our third game was against Singleton Public School, they were too strong for us and we went down three tries to one with debutant, Colby Page scoring our try. Our fourth game was against Warners Bay Public and we went down in a close game, one try to nil. Lastly, we played Rutherford Public School and we managed a draw – three tries each. Jai Holland scored one and Aaron Price snagged a double. Thanks to the parents that assisted on the day, we appreciate your help.
