Gateway Award Participants go camping! On the 12th August seven of our Gateway Award participants went on a weekend camping break to Coventry with the Gateway Award staff. The camp is organised annually by the Coventry Scouts in partnership with Coventry Mencap, specifically for Mencap groups across the country.

Our members participated in a range of outdoor activities, team building exercises and discos, and for some had their first experience of sleeping in the great outdoors.

The passage below is taken from the diary of Gateway Silver Award participant, Paul Cooper: Saturday 13th August: At 1:45pm we started our first sub camp activities. Then we did our 2nd sub camp activities called Hogwarts Express. Then we did our 3rd sub camp activities called water rockets and water bombs. Terri got hit on the bum! We did marshmallows on the camp fire and horse racing. Then we did our last sub camp activity called passport control with paper aeroplanes. At 4:50pm we went to the drinks station to get a cup of tea and sat outside the retreat. At 5:30pm we went in the stream hut for our tea and sat on the Wirral Mencap table. Then we had a roast dinner and then we had cake and custard. After 7pm we walked to the camp fire then at 7:30pm we sang camping songs. At 8:15pm we went to the storm hut for the disco!

New members committee represent Wirral Mencap in Chorley We now have a committee of members with a learning disability that help us think of new ideas for our clubs and projects, as well as acting as spokespeople for the charity. The members committee went to Chorley on the 20th August to meet other Mencap groups from the North West of England. They shared information about our Crossbow Club and Holiday, the Gateway Awards Programme, our Christmas Party and our new Volunteering Service, and in return they heard about what other groups were doing in other parts of the country. It was a great day for sharing and we got lots of new ideas for activities. We also made some new friends from other local groups.

Wirral Mencap Minibus The process for booking our minibus has now changed. For any groups that use the minibus please be aware that you now need to call the office on 666 1829 to check the availability of the bus and to make a booking. You will also need to collect the keys from the office during office hours, prior to collecting the bus. We now also need to see driver’s licenses and to have drivers sign a declaration before taking the keys.

Volunteer Mentors Needed As outlined in our last newsletter, we have a new project called ‘Volunteering for All’ that supports people with a learning disability to volunteer in the community. The project identifies suitable volunteer mentors that can offer motivational support and guidance to assist the person in their volunteering role. We are looking for people to act as volunteer mentors in a range of placements such as charity shops, offices and gardens. Training will be provided. Please call Rose on 666 1829 or email [email protected]
