    INTRODUCTION

Intel and Integrated Device Technology partnering to

develop chipsets for Intel's Wireless Charging

    Technology.

WCT transmitters are integrated into laptops, mobile,

standalone chargers anywhere else where battery-

    drained devices are used.

OBJECTIVE To develop and deliver the wire-free

    charging experience to its customers.

    Power sharing across devices much

like tethering grants a laptop access

    to a Smartphone's Internet

    connection.

THE IDEA IS - A user will be able to place a compatible

mobile device within an inch of a WCT-equipped Ultra book and the phone ortablet will begin siphoning energy fromthe computer.

Rather than having to use inductivecharging techniques such as chargingmats, the new chipsets will allow aSmartphone to be charged from a laptop

The laptop will couple with the mobiledevice and begin transferring energywirelessly.

How does it works? Intel wireless charging effort is

based on a platform created by

    IDT.

    The power receiving device has

    to be modified (the power

    receiving antenna) or

    specifically designed to

    operate with a wireless

    charger.

The wireless chargers usuallyoperate in micro-wave frequencyand therefore need to be in close

    proximity to the device beingcharged.

    It relies on resonance technology,

which allows devices to be chargedwithout physically touching apower source.

Magnetic induction, the othermajor method for wireless energytransfer, generally demands contactbetween transmitters.

Competing the Market The chipmaker is entering a market where there is

already a proposed Standard called Qi.

88 products are listed by the Wireless Power Consortium

as being Qi-compatible, including phones from NTT

    DoComo and HTC.

Since Qi is already getting widespread support and

Intels chips have made it in to very few mobile devices

so far, Intel has some work ahead if it is to be a success.

    Intel's claim that a 10% drain on a laptop's

battery will enable a 30% increase in a coupled

Smartphone's power .That is certainly intriguing.

Apple may have a role to play. It holds patents

for not only an induction-driven charging

station but also the capability to wirelessly share

power across devices--a utility very similar to

what IDT and Intel have planned.

Hitting the MarketIDT confirmed it would be making the chipsets available

to designers from the start of 2013.
