Introduction to WAVE SystemsVehicular Communications and Networks arededicated short range communications (DSRC) or wirelessaccess in vehicular environments (WAVE) systems. The

later is based on the IEEE 802.11p standard, which isexpected to ratied in 2009.

Key Technical Merits include adopting orthogonalfrequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM) modulationscheme with a data rate of 627Mbits/s operating over5.8505.925GHz band assigned by the FCC.

Main Applications are ITS, highspeed communicationsand Internet access, safety and security enhancements.

WAVE SolutionThe WAVE system is a major ITS initiative that canenhance the transportation environment in the

aspects of safety, management and data services in afast speed and with less cost when compared to otherstrategies, such as expensive road infrastructureexpansion.

In the United States, DOT plans to equip every vehiclewith a WAVE system and install a large number of roadside units (RSUs) in the main roads and highways tomake the WAVE services available.

    What is Wireless vehicular system?

Wireless vehicle safety communication is anelectronic sub-system in a car or in the othervehicle for the exchanging safety information, about such as road hazards and the location and

speed of vehicles over a short-range radio linkes. This may involve temporary ad hoc wireless local

    area networks.

A vehicular network consisting of four onboard

units (OBU) and two RSUs will be setup todemonstrate both high-speed data transformationand safety message broadcasting.

    How is it work ?

Wireless unit will be installed in vehicles andprobably also in fixed locations such as neartraffic signals and emergency call boxes along theroad.

Sensors in the cars and at the fixed locations, aswell as possible connections to wider networks,

will provide the information, which willbe displayed to the drivers in some way.

The range of the radio links can be extended byforwarding messages along multi-hop paths. Even

without fixed units, information about fixedhazards can be maintained by moving vehicles bypassing it backwards.

It also seems possible for traffic lights, which onecan expect to become smarter, to use this

information to reduce the chance of collisions.

    What is it future Application?

In the future, it may connect directly to the adaptivecruise control or other vehicle control aids. Cars, busesand trucks with the wireless system connected totheir brakes may move in convoys, to save fuel andspace on the roads. When any column member slows

down, all those behind it will automatically slow also.

    It provides the following things:

    high-speed vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to

    infrastructure(V2I) data transmission

applications in intelligent transportation systems(ITS),vehicle safety services and Internet access

Massive Market PerspectiveThe massive market of WAVE systems will sustain severaltierone automobile suppliers.

Thousands of workshops will be needed to install WAVEdevices to existing billions of vehicles.

WAVE systems will foster several WAVE services operatorswith similar sizes to those of existing cellular mobilecommunication providers.

WAVE systems generate a fresh information industry basedon vehicles, of which the magnitude and degree of itsimpacts on our society are substantial, multilayered andprofound.

    WiVi: Wireless IntraVehicle

InfrastructureWe coined the popular name ofWiVi to represent the intra

vehicle infrastructure adopting ultrawide band (UWB) radio,

which is proposed to provide onboard passengers with high

speed wireless access to the Internet and Entertainment andthus turns the riding into a completely new experience.
