The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences is one of twelve faculties at the Georg-August-Universität

in Göttingen. The Faculty looks after approximately 2000 students and covers Bachelor and

post graduate study programmes. The Faculty is composed of three departments: the

Department of Animal Sciences, the Department of Crop Sciences and the Department of

Agricultural Economics and Rural Development. The three departments, with their 32 divisions

and all further study- and research institutions, offer a broad spectrum of knowledge. Thanks

to the cooperation with the Faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences of the University of

Kassel/Witzenhausen, there is an opportunity to choose modules from the area of Organic

Agriculture. The long tradition of teaching in Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture at both study

locations further allows for a generous offer of modules in this field.

With this study guide we welcome all Erasmus, Erasmus Plus, visiting students and all those

who would like to study at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August-University

in Göttingen for one to two semesters. Visiting students who speak German are invited to take

part in the modules which the Faculty offers with German language as language of instruction.

For those who prefer to communicate in English the Faculty offers modules with English as

language of instruction. The study guide lists all modules on offer with an indication in which

semester and in which language these courses are available. Eventual entrance restrictions are

listed in the complete module catalogue. You will be informed of place limitations by the

completion of the learning agreement.

Good luck in Göttingen!

1 Application and admission

Students who would like to study in Göttingen within the framework of a partnership

programme as ERASMUS or partnership student must first apply for the exchange program

through their home university. After successful application at the home university the students

can enrol in Göttingen as an ERASMUS or partnership student.

Please note the following deadlines:

1st June for the winter semester

1st December for the summer semester

Late applications may not be considered for accommodation services!

For the registration as an exchange student in Göttingen please use the online application

form. The seven steps of application is explained on the following web-page:

http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/48917.html

2 Module offer of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences

A comprehensive programme of German speaking modules is available in the Degree

Programmes “B.Sc. Agricultural Sciences“ and “M.Sc. Agricultural Sciences“ with the following

six core areas:

Agribusiness

Economic Plant Sciences

Livestock Sciences

Resource Management

Economic- and Social Sciences of Agriculture

and also in the M.Sc. Degree Programme „Equine Sciences“ (only a few modules are available

in English).

Three Degree Programmes are available in English: the profile “Integrated Plant and Animal

Breeding” (iPAB); “Crop Protection” and “Sustainable International Agriculture” (SIA). The

Study Programme SIA is available as a joint degree together with the University of

Kassel/Witzenhausen. SIA has an international orientation and offers three core areas:

International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics

International Organic Agriculture

Tropical Agriculture

Page 5: Wintersemester 2019/20 Fakultät für Agrarwissenschaften · semester and in which language these courses are available. Eventual entrance restrictions are listed in the complete

3

In the core area “International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics” most modules

are read in Göttingen whereas the modules of the core area “International Organic Agriculture”

mainly take place in Witzenhausen. Half the modules in “Tropical Agriculture” are offered in

Göttingen and half in Witzenhausen.

This study guide offers an overview of all modules for the five Degree Programmes described

above. Visiting students have the possibility to take part in the modules offered in Göttingen as

well as in Witzenhausen. Students can commute by train between Göttingen and Witzenhausen

free of charge. The journey takes 20 minutes.

3 ECTS-Credits

Each module has a credit value according to the amount of work involved. The credits are

given in accordance with the ECTS credit system. Most of the modules of the Faculty of

Agricultural Sciences are offered with six credits, this means 4 lecture hours per week over one

semester (16 weeks of teaching). The average work load per semester amounts to 30 credits

which, for us, represents five modules. The amount of teaching hours offered for a module per

week is called ‘Semester Wochen Stunden’ (short SWS) or `weekly lecture hours’ (short WLH).

4.2 Examination periods

There are two examination periods per semester: one at the end of the current semester and

one at the beginning of the new semester. The duration of the examination period is 3 weeks;

though one week is still part of the lecture period. If you study more than one semester you

can if you prefer, choose to take your exams in the first or in the second examination period.

In the case of block seminars, exams can also be offered outside of these examination periods.

If you cannot make any of the examination dates offered, there is a chance to agree upon

other dates with the professor in charge.

4.3 Examination calendar

Under the following link you will find a list of exams per exam period in calendar form for each

study period and for each core study area respectively:

http://www.fakagrar.uni-goettingen.de/kalender

4.4 Registration for examination: FlexNow

Registration for module examinations is done electronically by the students themselves in

FlexNow which you find under eCampus.

The registration for written module examinations is to be done at least seven days before the

examination date. Withdrawal for a written examination without a reason (deregistration) is

possible up to 24 hours before the examination. The registration for oral module examinations

is also to be done at least seven days before the examination date. However deregistration is

only possible up to seven days before the beginning of the examination. The registration for

course supplementary practical module examinations should be done at least seven days

before the examination period. Deregistration is possible up to seven days before the

beginning of the examination – usually the beginning of the practical or project work. The

registration for other course-supplementary module examinations should be done at the

beginning of the courses. Deregistration is possible in the case of assignments up to the issue

of the assignment subject, in the case of presentations, seminar papers and joint seminar

papers up to two weeks before the date of the seminar/lecture.

Examination achievements can be taken into account only in one module of this degree

programme. Successfully completed modules can’t be repeated.

How to register on Flexnow

To register for an examination, open eCampus and choose FlexNow in the upper bar. Then you

choose “Register for exams/cancel registration” in the left column. You proceed and choose

“Module im Masterstudiengang” (Modules in Master degree). You will find the examination offer

in the degree program which offer the module.

Page 7: Wintersemester 2019/20 Fakultät für Agrarwissenschaften · semester and in which language these courses are available. Eventual entrance restrictions are listed in the complete

5

Normally, there are two exams offered for a module. One offered in the first exam period, and

one in the second period. Please make sure that you check the exam date when you register,

so that your registration is for the desired date.

4.5 In case of illness

In the case that you cannot take an exam due to illness on the exam date, you have to notify

the exam office with a sick leave note provided by your the doctor within three days of the

exam date. The notification is done through ecampus. Please select “Acknowledgement of an

illness”. The online form to fill out will be opened. Your name automatically appears on the top

of the form. You have to select the topic of the examination (“Prüfungsfach auswählen”) and

upload the sick leave note (“Attest hinzufügen”). At last you sign with your electronic signature

(“Signatur einfügen”). If you submit the sick leave note later than three days of the exam, it

will not be accepted and you will get a not passed due to absence without valid excuse. You

will then only have two more times to try to pass this exam.

4.6 Repetition of exams

Repetition of failed exams: exams can be repeated twice, however, it may not be possible for

you to take part in the second examination period if you are only here for one semester.

Before you repeat the exam for the second time you will have to show proof of a compulsory

session with the Student Advisory Service.

4.7 UniVZ – Stud.IP

The UniVZ is an information platform for students which you can use to put together your

semester plan in accordance with the guidelines of the examination regulations. UniVZ offers

access to the following data: courses, rooms, people, institutions, publications, international

contacts. Furthermore, structures of Bachelor and Master Degree Programmes can be

presented and linked to the corresponding courses. Students can enter their information

regarding the structure of their study courses. The platform builds and displays the study

schedule showing possible clashes between courses (lectures, exercises etc.).

http://univz.uni-goettingen.de

Stud.IP is a software programme used to support courses. It is used at universities and

further education centres. Stud.IP offers some useful tools for daily life at uni: your personal

study schedule can be generated automatically taken from the data of courses you subscribed

to. This schedule will show you your current lecture week. Changes are adapted immediately.

Further, there is a calendar which, if desired, shows you all the dates of the courses in which

you take part. So you can quickly get an overview which subjects will come up in your courses.

In addition, you can use the system to create your own personal homepage. Here, you can add

a photo or give information related to your CV, hobbies etc. Registration to Stup.IP is clearly

recommended, as most of the professors and their staffs enter lecture notes and additional

Page 8: Wintersemester 2019/20 Fakultät für Agrarwissenschaften · semester and in which language these courses are available. Eventual entrance restrictions are listed in the complete

6

material that is necessary for you to pass the exams. In order to use the full function of

Stud.IP, you have to register in the system. For the first registration and logins, please visit

the homepage:

http://www.studip.uni-goettingen.de

For any problems which might occur, please contact the personnel of the chip card issuing

office between lecture rooms 010 and 011 in the central lecture hall (ZHG), Platz der Göttinger

Sieben 5, 37073 Göttingen. Opening hours: Monday to Friday between 10.00 and 17.00h.

4.8 Examination attestations and certificates

To find your grades in Ecampus you select “Summary of Achievements” just below the botton

for registration for exams. Then you press the botton “Create”. Your transcript will then be

generated as a pdf form. The transcript you can generate has an expiry date and a code. With

this code an eventual recipient can validate the transcript online. Therefore, there is no need

for a signature.

5 Student Advisory Service and Student Organisation

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences offers a constant advisory service for students of

Agricultural Sciences. The tasks of the constant advisory service are amongst others the

consultation of the students regarding the planning and execution of their Degree Programme

7 Students’ initiatives

7.1 Student Council

These are your contacts for all questions regarding the degree programme of Agricultural

Sciences. The Student Council organises various activities for the freshmen such as the

orientation phase called O-Phase as well as the famous ‘Lawi(Aggi)-parties’.. In addition, they

represent the students’ interests in various committees and inform you of current events in

your newsletter!

http://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/43310.html

7.2 Various work study associations (German speaking events)

During the last years the following work study associations (AGs) developed due to the

dedication of various students (all of which are German speaking events except AG

Internationales below which is an English speaking event):

Student Council (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/43310.html)

AG Horse (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/435246.html)

AG Pig (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/188817.html)

AG Dairy Farming (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/26072.html)

AG Cultivation (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/187621.html)

The idea behind the development of these work study associations is the creation of a platform

for students with a professional and private interest in one of the above mentioned subjects.

This offers an opportunity to network and exchange information within the frame of these

regular meetings during the semester. In addition to the independent preparation of certain

questions and the possibility to give short talks on current subjects, speakers with practice in

the field are regularly invited for lectures. Furthermore, there are interesting excursions from

time to time. You are very welcome to take part in one of the workshops. Just come to the

meetings, get an idea of what it is like and join in!

Page 11: Wintersemester 2019/20 Fakultät für Agrarwissenschaften · semester and in which language these courses are available. Eventual entrance restrictions are listed in the complete

9

Tipp: During the semester several field trips will be organized by the different students’

initiatives. Make sure you are up to date and ask your German fellow students!! You will also

find new information on their facebook pages!

7.3 Study work association (English speaking event)

AG Internationales

The aim of this project is to have a meeting point for all the students of the faculty that are

interested in topics related to international agricultural issues. The goal is, as in the other

project teams of the faculty, to close the gap between university and practice, and to discuss

current topics and to establish contacts with policy makers, institutes, companies and

international organizations. Activities:

Invite experts to hold talks at the university with discussions at the end.

Plan excursions to get to know better the agriculture in Germany and to visit

international companies to establish contact with future employees.

Create a network with different institutes and international organizations.

Join us and have fun getting known other students and planning interesting activities at the

faculty. We are meeting during the semester on Thursdays at 8:00 pm in Autonomicum. For

more information write us an E-Mail: [email protected]
