Faith Formation Happy New Year! May this year be blessed with Christ’s peace and blessings to you and your families. This is the time of the year so many of us make New Year resolutions that often fall by the wayside by February. As you look ahead to this new year, please think about our parish mission which calls us all to discipleship. In order to grow as a disciple of Jesus we need to know Him and fol-low Him. Just as with any relationship that means spending time with Him and getting to know Him better. Think about this for the coming year. Make a resolution to spend just 15 minutes a day in prayer with Jesus. Talk to Him, read scripture or just reflect and listen to what he may be calling you to do. Make a resolution to participate in at least one adult faith formation opportunity in the coming year. We cannot hold onto the same images, ideas and re-lationship we did as a child. There will be many opportunities to join a small group, attend a speaker session or maybe just read a good book and join in conversation at the book club. But please take the time to participate in some small way. You will be glad you did. Our adult Faith Formation Committee is already planning the year with many opportunities for growing in your faith. The next Holy Book Club meeting will be on Tuesday, February 13th at 10:00 am at the Sister Bay site. The book "Defending the Spirit" by Robin-son will be very briefly discussed as it is such a "dark" and "angry" book. We will however discuss in detail, "Women of the Castle" by Jessica Shattuck. Come to share in the discussion or just to lis-ten. We are working with three other churches here in the county to organize a weekly walk, pray and chat event. We will meet at different locations to walk through beautiful Door County, share prayer and meet new friends. More to come on this in the spring. As Lent approaches we will also be forming more small groups to help us grow in this holy season. We can always use more help on our committee. If you have some ideas or simply want to help us plan these events please call Mark Kunstman at (920) 495-5856. We hope to see everyone at an Adult Faith Formation event this

year.

Christian Service & Responsibility Remember the suffering of every person in your heart. Then bring them all to God in your prayers. Tweet from Pope Francis THANK YOU to all those who supported Stella Maris CARE 24/7 Food Pantry through our Reverse Advent Calendar food drive and also for those contributing food items and/or financial assistance throughout the year. Your generosity is truly appreciated. DID YOU KNOW? Bread for the World, a Christian organization has as it’s goal to end world hunger by 2030. In May, the group started a campaign called “For Such a Time as This: A Call to Prayer, Fasting and Advocacy”. On the 21st of each month, faith leaders from across the US give up a meal or fast and pray for the day, asking God’s help to end world hunger. They use the 21st of the month as this is the day SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) for most families run out each month, according to Bread for the World. WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO? Feed My People on average assists 75 households each month. In addition to food donations, the agency spends $20,000 per year to purchase food items. Our donation of $1,000 was used for this. $500 sent to Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) helped provide ongoing help, hope and healing to those grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America. Their outreach includes Good Grief Camps for young survivors, survivor seminars, a nationwide network of support groups, crisis intervention and a 24/7 toll-free helpline. $500 given to Door-Tran was used to assist with transportation needs of county residents through their volunteer driver program, gas and travel vouchers and loans for vehicle repair and purchase.

Worship and Music Column

Today, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. The Gospel of Matthew tells us of the three Magi – wise men from the East – who followed a star across the desert to Bethlehem, bearing gifts of gold, frankin-cense and myrrh. Gold represented Jesus's royal standing, frankincense his divine birth and myrrh his mortality. The word ‘Epiphany’ comes from the Greek and means ‘manifestation.’ What the Church celebrates today is the event that clearly reveals who Jesus is to the whole world; He is revealed to the Magi who have come from far away to adore Him. The Magi are the first Gentiles, the first outsiders, to recognize the divine kingship of Jesus. On Christmas Day, we celebrated the Son of God becoming fully human. Today and at the Baptism of the Lord and at the wedding feast at Cana we celebrate the manifesta-tion of the divine nature of Jesus. We also announce the solemn proclamation of Easter and the principal moveable feasts of the church through chant. It serves to make the connec-tion between the Epiphany and Easter and connects all feasts to the greatest Christian solemnity – The Resurrection and Easter Sunday. On Epiphany, there is a tradition of writing in chalk above the door to your home. This is an ancient cus-tom that marks the household for Christ. Above the door to your home inscribe 20+C+M+B+18 in chalk. The year, 2018, is placed at the beginning and at the end of the marking. The “+” are the signs of the cross of salvation, and the initials “CMB” stand for Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, the tradi-tional names of the three wise men. The letters also stand for the Latin phrase, “Christus mansionem benedicat” which means “May Christ bless this house”. The Christmas season officially ends with the Bap-tism of the Lord on January 8th. We remember all those baptized at Stella Maris during the past year and keep them in our prayers as they grow in grace.

Parish Membership Stella Maris Parish is delighted when new people want to join our parish and gladly wel-comes them into our faith com-munity. Contact the parish of-fice.

Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please con-tact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism.

Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or bap-tized adults wishing to be con-firmed, the RCIA program is available.

Reconciliation God’s great mercy is some-thing to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God’s unconditional love in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sac-rament on the 1st Thursday of

the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by ap-pointment.

Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joy-ful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation.

Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compas-sion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encour-aged to notify the office to arrange for visits or commun-ion.
