Message from the President Message from the Winter Welcome Chair

Message from the SMUSA President

Saint Mary’s acknowledges our presence on the traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq nation. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) peoples first signed with the British crown in 1725. The Treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized the Mi’kmaq and Maliseet title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship.

Welcome to Winter at Saint Mary’s! While the weather might be cold and snowy, the warmth and kindness of our Santamarian community will help you successfully transition into university life.

With change, feelings of excitement and anxiety are common. Our Winter Welcome is designed to help you find your way on campus, make new friends and begin your academic exploration.

Here are some tips to help you with this exciting transition:

1. Participate in Winter Welcome! You’ll make new friends, learn how university works and realize that you’re not alone! Whether you’re outgoing or quiet, living in residence or off-campus, our welcome activities are for everyone.

2. Get involved. Join a student society, chat with your professors after class, even work on campus – getting involved will help you feel more at home.

3. Ask for help. You’re not expected to know everything! We have many resources to help with your academic needs and mental/physical wellness. Visit our Resources for New Students on smu.ca for details!

On behalf of the Welcome Weeks Committee, I want to express how happy we are to have you join our Santamarian community and wish you great success for the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

Tom Brophy, Welcome Weeks Committee ChairpersonSenior Director, Student Affairs & Services

Hello Huskies,

We are really excited for you to join us on our campus for Winter Welcome 2019 (hopefully you are too)! As students working for students, we’re here to make your university experience the best it can be. That’s why we’ve been working hard to make this year a memorable one for each and every one of you, starting with Winter Welcome! Always remember that Winter Welcome is just the start of many great events, programs and initiatives, and I can’t wait to see each and everyone of you.

Best,

Ossama NasrallahPresident & CEOSaint Mary’s University Students’ Association
