Winter Reading Program Starts January 15 Preschool Fair January 20 p.8

2 The Beacon :: January/February 2018

More books than ever are being published every year, and formats have expanded beyond print to include electronic, audio and graphic. The dedicated citizens who worked to open a public library in Crystal Lake had a goal – provide access to reading materials for more people. Today it is important to keep asking ourselves – Why does the public library exist? What are the needs of our community? What services should the public library be providing to serve community needs? The Crystal Lake Public Library currently has a strategic plan that articulates its mission and identifies key service areas; the strategic plan informs short and long term decisions. The mission of the Crystal Lake Public Library is: Helping people, of all ages and backgrounds, learn, enjoy and better their lives. Our five service responses provide the links between the community’s needs, interests and priorities, and the programs and services the Library offers. Connect to the Online World: Public Internet Access. Residents will havehigh-speed access to the digital world with no unnecessary restriction or fees to ensure everyone can take advantage of the ever-growing resources and services available through the Internet. Create Young Readers: Early Literacy. Children from birth to age five will have programs and services designed to ensure they will enter school ready to learn to read, write and listen.

Satisfy Curiosity: Lifelong Learning. Residents will have the resources they need to explore topics of personal interest and continue to learn throughout their lives. Stimulate Imagination: Reading, viewing and listening for pleasure. Residents who want materials to enhance their leisure time will find what they want when and where they want them and will have the help they need to make choices from among the options. Understand How to Find, Evaluate and Use information: Information Fluency. Residents will know when they need information to resolve an issue or answer a question and will have the skills to search for, locate, evaluate, and effectively use information to meet their needs. Visit a Comfortable Place: Physical and Virtual Spaces. Residents will have safe and welcoming physical places to meet and interact with others, or to sit quietly and read and will have open and accessible virtual spaces that support networking. Every few years the Library Board and staff go through the strategic planning process to ensure we understand the current community needs and determine what the Library should provide in an effort to meet those needs. If you have thoughts you’d like to share, please communicate with me at [email protected] or 815.526.5102. Thanks for reading.

Dear Reader,

As we embark on 2018, it is another milestone year for the Crystal Lake

Public Library – celebrating 105 years of serving our community. Our Public Library has endured and evolved over the decades. The world, Crystal Lake, and our Public Library have certainly changed since a small reading room first opened in the H.A. Dodge home for a few hours each Saturday, offering books, magazines, and a place to read. Our Library is now (physically) open 68 hours, 7 days per week and (virtually) accessible 24/7 via the website offering on-line databases and e-materials.

Spelling BeeTuesday, April 10 | 6 p.m. Why should kids have all the fun? Crystal Lake Public Library is putting a new twist on an old tradition. CLPL librarians are in the midst of preparing a spelling bee - for adults! Library staffers are working with Se-nior Services Associates to coordinate the event, which will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the Senior Services Associates Center, 110 W. Woodstock St., Crystal Lake. The competition will be open to McHenry County residents age 55 or older.

Senior spelling bees have become popular throughout the country. Illinois has its own formal competition sponsored by the Illinois Department of Aging and the Illinois Senior Center Association. “This is something other libraries have done and had great success with,” said Library Director Kathryn I. Martens. “We wanted to try it here, and we think it will be fun.” Look for more detailed information about the Adult Spelling Bee in the Library’s March/April Beacon newsletter. Registration will begin Feb. 23 at clpl.org.
