MANGA and ANIME

Japanese culture has its own unique forms of comic books and animation.

Manga (comic books) and anime (animation) are extremely popular in Japan. The

earliest animation that is known to have been created in Japan was released in

!". This early cartoon featured a samurai testing a sword and being defeated.

 Japanese animation pioneers included #eitar$ %itayama& Jun'ichi %ouchi& and

#himokawa ten. The modern style of anime was developed during the !*s.

ne of the most in+uential artists is samu Te,uka. -e followed the example set

by alt /isney's popular animated 0lms and simpli0ed the techniques they

pioneered to save time and money. Today's anime is both generated by

computers and drawn by hand.

1ll genres are represented& but science 0ction is by far the most popular.

2obots& post3apocalyptic metropolises& and motorcycles are all staples of the art

form. Manga features similar content. /uring the decade of the !"*s& manga

experienced a drastic increase in popularity& and many of the books were

adapted into anime. Te,uka continued to shape the manga and anime industries

over the years. Many of the common characters& like giant robots& come from his

in+uence. 4iant robots were further developed by 4o 5agai and other animators

into a new genre called #uper 2obot. This genre evolved through the work of

6oshiyuki Tomino and became known as 2eal 2obot. The !7*s brought many

classic animes in this genre& like The #uper /imension 8ortress Macross and

4undam 0lms. 1nime obtained vast mainstream acceptance throughout Japan in

the !7*s. 1lthough& it was still less popular than manga. Many would argue that

the seminal work of both manga and anime is 1kira& written by %atsuhiro tomo

and 9,o -ashimoto. 1kira a long and epic science 0ction story that is set in Tokyo

that has been rebuilt after a catastrophic disaster.

ne of the interesting things about manga is that it is widely3read by women.

:eople who are familiar with 1merican comic books will know that women are a

small minority of its reading audience. :opularity with women has helped manga

spread rapidly outside of Japan. Manga that is speci0cally targeted towards

women is call sho;o (girl) and usually deals with teenagers looking for boyfriends

or going through typical teenage experiences& such as having to attend a

di<erent school& su<ering the trials and tribulations of being bullied& or

attempting to make a break from their regular cliques. -owever& these are not

the only stories that are told in sho;i. #ho;o can also include exciting action

stories with strong female protagonists in interesting roles that inspire young

women& like those of scientists and warrior samurai. 1 common characteristic of

manga are females with huge expressive eyes. #upernatural elements are also

popular in this reading material. <beat sub;ects are another theme that is

common in some sho;i manga.

;ust cartoons and 9 was wasting time my on them& but when 9 tried to 0nd out

what was so important 9 discovered an incredible story that 9 loved and regretted

that 9 ;udged animes. 9 spent all summer watching anime& later 9 reali,ed that 9

had watched a lot of them& so 9 learned not to ;udge anything before 9 knew the

story. ( eleva anonima )

c) Through friends ( =atalina *= )

d) 9t was a TG post ... 1nimax 9 think& the 0rst anime that 9 saw there was D’Tokyo

Mew Mew@@ ( #imona *E )

#. What determined you to watch anime ?

a) ell& H9 really liked the story line they had and this made me to watch them

and because they were animation ( and 9 really like animations of all kinds ) plus

the fact they were Japanese and 9 really love their culture ( eleva anonima )

b) 1 bet& 9@m still watching them ( =atalina *=)

c) The fact 9 was bored made me watch them. 1fter a few series 9 started to like

them so much& and now 9 am watching them even online ( 2obert *)

d) hat determined me to watch anime was the fact that they were something

totally di<erent but at the same time a combination with reality. The feeling of experiencing new things can in+uence you to watch anime& as it happened to

me. 9 wanted to discover this world to which people were attracted and

surprisingly they loved it. 9'm glad that 9 made this choice because 9 found an

opportunity to see the things in a di<erent way and to live my life knowing what

will happen because an anime can bring you a life lesson that you can't forget.

( eleva anonima )

$. Wou%d you %i&e to rep%ace the dai%y cartoons with the

anime? Why?

a) 6es 9 would like to replace them with anime because some of them show

scenes from real life stories& feelings& romanticIdrama situations and so on while

regular cartoons bore the audience ( eleva anonima )

b) 6es 9 would like itF some animes are very educational and interesting in

comparison with cartoons nowadaysF 9 encourage watching anime any regardless

of age ( eleva anonima )

c) 9 would not want to replace them because they are completely di<erent andboth have their own charm ( 2obert *= )

Page 4: Anime project

d) -onestly if we talk about the cartoons nowadays 9 think it would be better to

replace them because some animes are educational in terms of psyche& they

help you build a personality and help with the development of children& teaching

them about respect& love& friendship & hope and maybe even the hardships of life

( #imona *E )

e)  5o& 9 wouldn't like to replace the cartoons with anime because the children

don't want to. 9n fact& some of them are not ready to see something di<erent. 5ot

all can D@embrace the animes& and a part of them believe that if the characters

aren't real& it's no sense to see them. There are a lot of arguments which support

my opinion. Eut& if everyone could watch anime& they could think and act more

corectly& not as it happens nowadays. ( eleva anonima )
