A letter from our Lay Reader Brenda

As the year draws to a close there is much to look back on and be thankful for.Our celebrations of 800 years of worship at St Andrews has brought us together in service and friendship on so many extra occasions which, I believe, has helped us to get to know each other better and strengthened us as a congregation ably led by Rowena and our hard working church wardens who do so much unseen work for the church and for the people. The church building with its spire, which can be seen from many places around Aylestone, can be reassuring to the community that God is still present in all our lives and many church non churchgoers still want to use it for special services such as All Souls, Remembrance Sunday and Christingle. So God’s message is still being sent out by us, the steadfast congregation. There are many things that can make us feel gloomy over this season of long nights and short days which means that we don’t see our neighbours to chat to and the cold weather keeps us indoors more; but we do have our wonderful festival of light at Christmas to enjoy and the hope that the birth of the Christ child brings. As we begin a new year we must hope that the Brexit issue is sorted quickly so that our government will be able to concentrate on more important issues. There is much for the faithful to look forward to and we thank God that more people are taking climate change seriously and we can all play our part in caring for God’s creation, but if Winter does begin to get us down we can always recite the prayer at the end of the Evensong service: “Lighten our darkness we beseech Thee o Lord, and defend us from all perils and dangers of this night.” Amen.

Wishing you and all whom you love a very Happy New Year.

St Lucy from Thomas O’Rourke

St. Lucy is known as patron Saint of the blind. Her feast day is celebrated on Friday13th December.St. Lucy is the patron saint of the city of Syracuse (Sicily) and of virgins.Because of various traditions associating her name [ her name means 'light' ] she came to be thought of as the patron of sightHer feast once coincided with Midwinter the shortest day of the year before calendar reforms, so her feast day has become a Christian festival of lightBraille, named after its inventor Louis Braille, was completely blind. His invention used worldwide, has been for many, many years, helpingto give independence, education and the pleasure of reading to people who lose their sight or who are born with a visual impairment.Lego Toys have created a new braille version of its famous building blocks, constructed especially for vision-impaired children. The product launch is expected in 2020.National Braille Week is organized by the charity Royal Blind and runs in the second week of October from the 7th - 13th October.Blindness has to be the most severe form of visual impairmentThe ability to see is regarded as the most treasured of the five senses. This moving poem from schooldays brings to light the fact that we often take for granted the precious things we are blessed with.

The Blind BoyO SAY what is that thing called Light, Which I must ne’er enjoy; What are the blessings of the sight, O tell your poor blind boy!

You talk of wondrous things you see; You say the sun shines bright;I feel him warm, but how can he Or make it day or night?

My day or night myself I make Whene’er I sleep or play; And could I ever keep awake With me ’twere always day.

With heavy sighs I often hear You mourn my hapless woe; But sure with patience I can bear A loss I ne’er can know.

Then let not what I cannot have My cheer of mind destroy: Whilst thus I sing, I am a king, Although a poor blind boy.

Colley Cibber 1671-1757
