Winners of The Ormrod Award for Volunteerism

Every year, CPF Toronto North presents the Ormrod Award to a graduating French Immersion student who has demonstrated leadership in the area of volunteerism. We give this award at two high schools from the former North York: York Mills Collegiate and Newtonbrook Secondary. It is almost 20 years now since we began the award. The Ormrod Award honours the memory of our friend and colleague. Audrey Ormrod worked tirelessly to promote French Second Language education opportunities for young people, in addition to volunteering her time for a variety of other causes. She was truly dedicated to making this world a better place, and we all admired her energy, spirit and devotion. She passed away in 1997 after a long battle with cancer. We ask both schools to choose a deserving student, who shown leadership in the important area of volunteerism. Academic achievement is not taken into consideration when determining the recipient. The CPF Toronto North Chapter delivers a small cash prize to the school for the recipient, together with a letter of congratulations. In addition, a multi-year school plaque is inscribed for display in the school's awards showcase. For 2016, the Ormrod Award at York Mills went to Sonika R. Her teachers said: “Sonika is an outstanding French Immersion student who has contributed greatly to life inside and outside the school. Some of her volunteer experiences include: managing the local temple resource centre, numerous marathons, summer camp and blood donor drives. She represents the qualities of a York Mills graduate both inside the school and within the community." For 2016 at Newtonbrook, the Ormrod Award was presented to Josh C. As Newtonbrook holds their Commencement in the fall, we have not yet received the details of Josh's volunteer activities but we hope to publish a bit more about him in our next newsletter.
