As students develop their ability to recall basic facts, it makes good sense to address both mastery of the skill and understanding of the concept.

Elementary Bridges Math Concept & ExplanationAs a community member or parent of an elementary student experiencing Bridges Math, you may be asking yourself a couple of questions:

Why is it a good idea to learn multiple strategies? Why not have students mem-orize basic facts and algorithms? As students develop their ability to recall basic facts, it makes good sense to address both mastery of the skill (quick recall of facts) and understanding of the concept (the properties of the operation and the relationships between facts). Bridges teaches basic facts by first having students explore the operation (addition, subtraction, multipli-cation, or division) in the context of story problems or situa-tions, which ensures students understand what it means to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Students then learn strategies for solving basic problems. These strategies illustrate properties of

the operation and can be used for mental math with larg-er numbers (as well as to help recall facts when needed). Finally, students practice the facts until they can recall them from memory.

Bridges teaches students to compute with larger numbers by first establishing conceptual understanding of the operation, then using visual models to learn different ways of calculating, and finally helping them become proficient with efficient algorithms.

Why is it important for students to show their work and explain their thinking in math? Asking students to show their work provides more information for teachers and improves student learning. When students explain how they solved a problem, they come to understand the mathe-matical concepts more deeply. Showing their work also provides detailed evidence that teachers can use to see what students know and where their misconceptions lie. This evidence is essential. It allows teachers to adjust the way they teach to meet students' needs, and to document student learning over time, which helps them communicate with families about students' progress. For similar reasons, state tests often require students to explain how they solved a problem. Students are better prepared for such test items when they explain their solutions on a regular basis.

Number Corner is a skill-building program that revolves around the class-room calendar. It features short daily workouts that introduce, reinforce, and extend skills and concepts related to the critical areas of study at each grade level. New pieces are added to the display each day, providing start-ing points for discussions, problem solving, and short written exercises. Computational Fluency is a common workout for all elementary grade levels. Activities, games, and practice pages are designed to develop and maintain computational fluency.

Southwest Michigan’s First Leader In Me School LEF Grant Funds Amazing Leadership Program

A few years ago, Hollywood Elementary received a gener-ous grant from the LEF to become Southwest Michigan’s first Leader In Me School.

Through this process, we’ve been teaching children at a young age to follow Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids, which helps them have a strong foundation for leadership skills throughout their lives. Implementing this in-depth process has transformed Hollywood’s building culture, strengthened student and staff focus by pinpointing individual academic growth, and helped to identify unique characteristics that make each child special.

The LEF continues to support their initial investment with Leader In Me! This year Hollywood Elementary was awarded a Foundation Grant to send 10 staff members to the annual conference in the Detroit area. This event provides staff with a chance to tour other Leader In Me schools, attend workshops and breakout sessions led by other educators in our field, and hear inspiring messages from top of the line keynote speakers. This truly is a time for us to

join other Leader In Me educators who have also transformed their paradigms of education to fit our belief of empowering elementary students to model 21st century leadership skills and achieve their full potential.

As with any profession, you want to stay current with the latest and greatest tips, ideas, and happenings and that’s exactly what our staff will get from attending the symposium!

We look forward to our staff representatives coming back energized and empowered with new ideas to take us to the next level in our journey. Heartfelt thanks to the LEF for their financial support of The Leader In Me!

2015 Hollywood Food Drive A huge thank you to all who participated in the Hollywood Food Drive this year. Your monetary donations purchased turkeys for 15 Hollywood families. These families enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving dinner thanks to your generosity. THANK YOU Kristi Sandmann and all her volunteers who coordinated the Food Drive.

Teachers proposed getting tricycles and other ride-on equipment to be used on the safety trail during recess.

LEF Grant Enhances Recess at Roosevelt ElementaryHave you noticed something new on Roosevelt's safety trail?

Our kindergarten teachers felt that the littlest Roosevelt All Stars were in need of something new to do during recess. Upper grades play sports or playground games that kindergarteners aren’t quite ready to try. This idea paired with a desire to get more use out of our safety trail led Mrs. Mey-er, Mrs. Whitt, and Mrs. Retterer to apply for an LEF grant. The teachers proposed getting tricycles and other ride-on equip-ment to be used on the safety trail during recess. The bikes were chosen based on age and weight limits so that first graders could also take advantage of the equipment. The plan included helmets and a shed for storage. The LEF chose to fund this plan and bring the idea to life! Construction for the shed took place over the summer and the bikes were deliv-ered just before school started.

Thank you so much to Roosevelt’s PTO and parents who took a bike or two home to assemble. We appreciate your help! We would also like to thank the LEF for funding this project.

Mrs. Meyer, Mrs. Whitt, and Mrs. Retterer applied for and received an LEF grant.

LEF Support Making A Difference at Stewart Elementary

At Stewart, the Lakeshore Excellence Foundation has supported the rainbow cart (pictured above) with materials to help students engage in word work activities, the purchase of Polydrons (which help students create three-dimensional shapes and understand the attributes of those shapes), the funding of Lego League, and support for our reading team with books for our students and support for our reading month in March.

We are so thankful for the support we receive from our community and the Lake-shore Excellence Foundation! Together, our students are provided so many won-derful opportunities to learn and succeed!

Women’s Service League Coat DriveThanks to everyone who participated in the Women’s Service League Coat Drive. Each November the members of Women’s Service League collect and distribute thousands of free coats to men, women, and children living in Berrien County. Coat drop boxes are set-up throughout the twin cities for community members and organizations to donate gently used coats and jackets of all shapes and sizes.

This is a wonderful event that has helped hundreds of thousands of people make it through the tough Michigan winters. Lakeshore Public Schools proudly partici-pates in the coat drive each year.

Lakeshore Robotics (photo from www.lakeshorerobotics.com)

The Lakeshore High School Robotics Team (“Team Lance-A-Bot”) has been pursu-ing a number of projects during the preseason. Students have been constructing a dynamometer, a device used to evaluate the types of motors that are needed for different applications, which will increase our expertise in a key area. They have also been creating a new robot cart for transporting the bot, designing and fabri-cating a variety of 3-D printed parts, and making a test bed for the programmers to use in gaining experience with controlling different sub-assem-blies (limit switches, sensors, etc.).

Team Lance-A-Bot had a strong season last year, serving as cap-tain of the 4th seed Alliance in quarter-final play at the St. Joseph District Competition. They narrowly missed advancing into the semi-finals. The team brought home another Industrial Safety Award (our 3rd) and a Hard Hat Safety Award. Safety Captain James Jungblut earned the Safety Star of the Day at the Gull Lake District Competition. Many thanks are extended to our 2015 team sponsors: Whirlpool, Kay Manufacturing, Bosch, Griffin Tool, Lake-shore Excellence Foundation, Vickers Engineering, Dane Systems, Midwest Glass and Mirror, Domino’s Pizza, Mathnasium, Culver’s, Wenzlaff Me-chanical Contracting, and Jeff Doornbos.

The 6-week build season for the 2016 game, StrongholdSM, kicks off on January 9. We invite you to attend our district competitions to cheer us on, March 10-12 at St. Joseph High School and March 24-26 at Mason High School. Attendance is free, and the events are family-friendly. LAKESHORE HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS…

Bye Bye BirdieMusic by Charles Strouse, Lyrics by Lee Adams, Book by Michael Stewart

The teens in the quiet, little town of Apple Valley, Ohio are already talking about the latest news: Kim MacAfee and Hugo Peabody are going steady. Then something amazing happens! Kim is announced as the lucky fan club member who will receive “one last kiss” from rock ‘n’ roll star Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, before he goes into the army. The event will be televised—live—on the Ed Sullivan show. Meanwhile, Albert Peterson, Conrad’s agent, has promised his secretary and sweet-heart, Rosie Alvarez, that he’ll leave the business and become an English teacher. Rosie wants to get married, but Albert’s overbearing mother disapproves and intro-duces Albert to Gloria. Angry and jealous, Rosie and Hugo make a perfect pair to turn the publicity stunt into a disaster. It all gets resolved in a happy ending, but not before a hilarious dance scene involving Rosie and the local Shriners.

Performances are on Friday and Saturday, January 29 and 30, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, January 31 at 2 p.m. in the Lakeshore Community Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.
