Lakeshore Public Schools has many strong traditions.

Without a doubt, our Career and Technical Education (CTE)

pathway is one of them. Recognized across the state, our CTE program pro-vides rigorous and relevant career and technical education that prepares our students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. Combined with rigorous core academ-ics, the CTE pathway prepares students to move immediately into the work-force, trade schools, apprenticeships, and even two and four year colleges.

Lakeshore Public Schools offers a wide variety of award winning CTE options right here on our high school campus.

These include Autos, Welding, Machine Tooling, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Woodworking, Marketing, Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA), and Teacher Cadet.

Each of these programs is housed in state-of-the art facilities that are a product of the 2013 Bond, generous support from the Lakeshore Excellence Foundation (LEF), and donations from such sources as the Berrien County Tooling Coalition, Lakeland Health Systems, Robert Bosch, and Whirlpool Corporation.

SOUTH PACIFICFebruary 2-4, 2018Tickets $15 Adults, $12 Seniors/Students with ID

South Pacific, with lyrics and music by Richard Rogers and Oscar Ham-merstein II, is based on Richard A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Tales of the South Pacific. Set

on a tropical island during WWII, the story explores racial prejudice while it follows two romances, one between a younger American nurse and an older French expatri-ate plantation owner, and another between a U.S. lieutenant and a Tonkinese girl.

Lakeshore Elementary Art Programs Elementary students have been busy creating Art to Remember.

Lakeshore has been utilizing Art to Remember to supplement the elementary art budget for 16 years. The program gives parents an opportunity to order unique gifts featuring their student’s work for their homes and for the holidays. (The artwork order form will be coming home to parents in the next few weeks.)

Creative Canvas Art Adventures is an after school art program offered to elementary students.  In each session students are learning art techniques, social, organizational, and decision-making skills; and becoming proficient using a paint-brush.  Stewart students can sign-up for Mondays, Roosevelt sessions are Fridays, and Hollywood meets on Tuesdays (all from 3:45-5:15 P.M. dates will be posted soon).Students can send registration forms to their school’s office before each session. Come join us for a fun after school opportunity!

Mark your calendars for the District Elementary Art Show taking place this spring in the middle school gym on April 20. This show is framed by Artome. Each elementary student will have a piece displayed!

Students enjoying their pizza at Stewart’s Harvest Hoopla!

Lakeshore 4th and 5th grade teachers are being trained in Reader’s Workshop methodology.

Lakeshore teachers of grades K-5 are being trained in Reader’s Workshop instruction to go along with our new Teachers College Reading Units of Study. Reader’s Workshop follows a predictable structure to each lesson - mini-lessons, independent practice reading while teacher confers with students one-on-one or in small groups, a mid-workshop teaching point, partner work, and a share time.  Research shows that students need to read a lot of texts, with high comprehension, in order to move-up levels of text complexity.  Students gain confidence as their volume of reading increases and as they work on individual needs throughout the day with feedback. Reading workshop allows for students to read (eyes on print) every day for 30-45 minutes (depending on grade and level) within the structure of the day.  This training started this past summer and will continue for the next 2-3 years.

Teachers College Reading Units of Study

Intervention/Extension Reading TimeAll K-5 students are participating in Intervention/Extension Reading time at each elementary school. This 30-minute block of time, 4-5 times a week, is an “all hands on deck” approach to reading that is focused on specific reading work that students need to do to improve their individual reading.  Some students are above grade level and are spending time in book clubs and doing projects based on higher level reading. Some students are in small groups getting focused attention on the skills they need to get their reading up to grade level. Other students are working on grade level work with peers.

All in all, the goal is for each student to grow as an individual reader.

Harvest Festival 2017Each elementary school held their annual Harvest Festival last month.  Students and their families were able to share in many wonderful activities such as: hayrides, face painting, the cake walk, bounce houses, and were able to enjoy a variety of food and beverages.  A good time was had by all. A special thank you to all of our PTO support as we could not host such a wonderful event without parent involvement. We look forward to next year and continuing this strong tradition at Lakeshore.

29th Annual Elementary Cross Country Meet

On October 17, third, fourth, and fifth graders had the opportunity to participate in the district wide elementary cross country meet.

The event was an after school activ-ity that took place behind Roosevelt School.  This year, we had 118 partici-pants. The course was approximately 1.2 miles long.

Each grade level ran separately. Awards were given to the top five boys and girls in each grade. Some students were in-trinsically motivated about running their best times. Others were very proud to participate in an activity that encouraged a healthy lifestyle, while having fun with friends.

The high school and middle school cross country teams attended to help on the course and encourage the young run-ners.  Many parents, teachers, and coaches also volunteered at the meet.

After the race, participants enjoyed hanging out with friends from the dif-ferent schools while enjoying a snack of apples that were donated  by the Lemon and Tyler families. We were very lucky to have a beautiful, sunny, warm, fall day that was perfect for running.

We are so proud of ALL of the par-ticipants and want to thank all of the volunteers who helped make the meet a success!

All three grade levels participated in OK2SAY presentations from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.  This presentation was very power-ful for our students regarding their safety and how they can be a hero

and speak-up. OK2SAY allows anyone to confidentially report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at Michigan students, school employees, or schools.

Awesome Alumni

MEGAN DOSCH 2013During her spring semester junior year, Megan studied abroad through the Brown in Bologna program. Not yet ready to return home after the semester concluded, she opted to stay in Italy for the summer helping out on a small family farm and agritourismo. After graduating in 2013 with concentrations in Religious Studies and Italian Studies, Megan spent the next two years volunteering with the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa. She worked as an agriculture extension agent in a small village promoting improved ag-ricultural techniques and sustainable field management practices. Living with a host family and learning their native language of Pulaar, Megan once again recognized the value of cultural exchange that comes with living abroad. In early 2016, Megan worked on a diversified, organic farm on a small island 12 miles off the coast of Maine. She recently received a Fulbright to pursue the Master of Gastronomy program at the University of Gastronom-ic Sciences in Pollenzo, where she began studying after the growing season. The program approaches the study of food from a variety of angles -- historical, cultural, anthropological, environmental, political -- and incorporates hands-on learning through tasting workshops and various study trips. With this Fulbright, Megan hopes to deepen her knowledge and understanding of food systems and production in order to better connect people to their environment, with food as the medium that unites them.

Lakeshore Robotics Team

The team picked up another Entrepreneurship Award, Innovation in Control Award, and Hard Hat Safety Award at our two district competitions.

Team Lance-A-Bot had a hugely successful season last year.

The team picked up another Entrepreneurship Award, Innovation in Control Award, and Hard Hat Safety Award at our two district competi-tions (St. Joseph and Gull Lake). In addition, the team made it into the semi-finals at both events, earning us enough points to advance to state competition for the first time in our six-year history. Once at the Michigan State Championship, we earned the Industrial Safety Award in our division and finished as Division Finalists as a member of the 1st Alliance. We went on to World Competition in St. Louis where we again advanced to the division play-offs, this time as Captain of the 6th Alliance. We ultimately lost the tie-breaker match at the end of the quarterfinals, but we made our oppos-ing Alliance fight hard to win the match. We were also recognized for our safety efforts by earning a “Pit #1 Safety” award in our division at World Competition.

The post-season has been filled with many activities, including demos and displays at the Mini-Maker Faire, Berrien County Youth Fair and Manufacturing Day as well as community service through Adopt-A-Highway roadside clean-up and distributing candy at a Halloween Safety Zone trunk or treat event.

Over the summer, team members and mentors organized and ran a “Junior Engineers” day camp for 13 students in grades 4-6. Students were introduced to the engineering cycle from concept to prototype and testing through designing their own vehicles, complete with motors and lights. Our high school team members use the same process when designing our robots.

Most recently, the team went to the West Michigan Robotics Invitational, where we advanced to the quarterfinals as part of the 7th Alliance along with the GreengineerZ from Berrien Springs and the Average Joes from St. Joseph.

Please join us at our 2018 district competitions at St. Joseph High School (March 8-10) and Gull Lake High School (March 15-17) as we all play this season’s new game, POWER UPSM. The season kick-off is January 6…watch for more information on the high school website.

Steinway Piano

The Lakeshore Community Never Sounded Better!

Lakeshore Public Schools, with the overwhelming support of our community have added an impressive piano to our fine arts programs.

The Lakeshore Excellence Foundation, Rotary Club, Lakeshore Public Schools, and Lakeshore Choir Parent Organization gave donations adding up to

$50,000. A new piano was carefully selected taking into consideration durability, tone, and the best possible investment for quality of musicality.

The 7-foot Boston, made by Steinway arrived in the spring of 2017, in time for students to use it for cabaret and spring choir concerts. The piano made its debut, looking stunning in the center of the stage, for the high school cabaret performance directed by high school choir director, Katherine Rohwer. Accompanist Kelly Meyer tickled the ivories while students impressively sang along.

The previous piano had been used well since 1972. The Lake-shore Community Auditorium Stage Crew, under the direction of Paul Milligan, was put to work to build a custom holding container for safe keeping when the piano is not in use.

Excellence in music is a priority at Lakeshore schools from el-ementary through high school. The generosity of our community speaks volumes to our school about the value of the arts and the value of each student who steps on the stage to perform with our new addition of the Boston piano.

An official plaque, commemorating this gift of music excellence will be placed in the auditorium area of the high school.

Stay “tuned” for upcoming concerts and events in the auditorium so you can experience the sound of community making music together.

The Lakeshore Excellence Foundation, Rotary Club, Lakeshore Public Schools, and Lakeshore Choir Parent Organization gave donations adding up to $50,000.
