You may have heard this before -- Stressed spelled back-wards is desserts . The holidays are here, and many of us areexperiencing the feelings of stress which might lead us todevouring more desserts! Wouldn t it be great if we enjoyedstressful times as much as we might enjoy eating a deliciousdessert? Sometimes taking a moment to slow down and reviewwhat is happening in our lives might help keep us healthy phys-ically and emotionally.

No matter our age, there is stress -- worry overexams/grades, finances, employment, gas for the car,boyfriend/girlfriend issues, family matters, marriage, illnesses, and numerous other issues. According to the Holmes-Rahe LifeStress Inventory, the top 10 stressors are: a spouse s death, divorce, marriage separation, a jail term, death of a close rela-tive, injury or illness, marriage, fired from a job, marriage rec-onciliation, and retirement. Some internal causes of stresswhich can make those stressors seem worse are: an inability toaccept uncertainty, pessimism, negative self-talk, unrealisticexpectations, perfectionism, and lack of assertiveness.

How do we know when we re stressed? Stress affects eachone of us in different ways. It affects our minds, bodies andbehaviors in ways we have learned to deal with. (Review thebelow table for signs of stress.)

Stress Warning Signs and SymptomsCognitive Symptoms

Memory problems Inability to concentrate Poor judgment Seeing only the negative Anxious or racing thoughts Constant worrying

Emotional SymptomsMoodiness Irritability or short temper Agitation, inability to relax Feeling overwhelmed Sense of loneliness and isolation Depression or general unhappiness

Physical SymptomsAches and pains Diarrhea or constipation Nausea, dizziness Chest pain, rapid heartbeat Loss of sex drive Frequent colds

Behavioral SymptomsEating more or less Sleeping too much or too little Isolating yourself from others Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)

Psychologist Connie Lillas uses a driving analogy to describethe three most common ways people respond when they re over-whelmed by stress:

Foot on the gas An angry or agitated stress response. You re heated, keyed up, overly emotional, and unable to sitstill.

iday float and participated in the Georgetown Christmas parade. Students riding on the float in theparade were, left to right: Colby Hastings, Caitlyn Mews, Emily Ritter, and Craig Chatterton.

Foot on the brake A withdrawn ordepressed stress response. You shutdown, space out, and show very littleenergy or emotion.

Foot on both A tense and frozenstress response. You freeze under pres-sure and can t do anything. You look par-alyzed, but under the surface you reextremely agitated.

Which response is yours? Identifyingyour stressors and knowing your reactionis the first step to helping yourself workthrough it. The next step is trying tochange how you react to that stress.Changing behavior can be difficult.Starting with the Four A s of managingyour stress could be helpful: 1. Avoidingthe stressor, 2. Altering the stressor, 3.Adapting to the stressor, or 4. Acceptingthe stressor. There are many methods toreducing stress. Relaxation techniques, journaling, reframing your thinking, exercise, reading, and humor are a fewtechniques in managing stress.

Taking the moment to help ourselvesis important! Information is just a clickaway on the internet. Use of libraryresources doesn t cost a thing. Laughingwith someone who shares your experi-ences can make you feel better. In theupcoming year, take the moment to cleanout some of your stress! (www.Helpguide.org)
