Dear Chamber Member Welcome to the November edition of Chamberlink. Within the last month the Chamber has hosted its fourth Cork Chamber Dublin Dinner and worked with members across all sectors from start-ups at the Cork innovates event to the Retail community through the City Centre Forum and a wide range of businesses through the Cork Digital Marketing Awards.

We are very pleased and excited to have launched the Cork City Centre Forum. We will be working with key businesses and stakeholders to develop new ideas and to refocus the energy and enthusiasm to rejuvenate the City, as well as to increase footfall and showcase the best of what Cork city has to offer. Key deliverables of this project will be to attain Purple Flag accreditation, to address the issues of access to the City Centre, parking and flooding, alongside some exciting new initiatives such as the Long-Table Dinner planned for Oliver Plunkett Street next summer, (see more info on page 4).

Our Congratulations to the winners of the inaugural Cork Digital Marketing Awards, a new project that has been added to showcase the innovative use of digital marketing across the region. Ten category winners were selected from an outstanding entry of over 300 and EazyCity were announced as the Overall Grand Prix winners preforming strongly across a range of categories, (see page 8 for full details). Further congratulations to Bia Beauty winner of the Cork innovates bursary who beat off stiff competition to win the 30,000 prize. We look forward to working with Tracy and the other exciting start-ups that we met through this fantastic initiative that supports entrepreneurship in the city.

Introducing the Cork Chamber Cork City Centre ForumOn the 10th November, Cork Chamber officially launched the Cork City Centre Forum. The Forum which is comprised of retailers and business owners from across the City as well as representatives of business organisations also includes new City Council Chief Executive, Ann Doherty and Superintendent Barry McPolin of An Garda Sochana.

The objective of the Forum is to identify and advance innovative opportunities to rejuvenate the City and increase footfall and business in the City Centre. The Forum will be a platform to re-focus the energy, enthusiasm and ideas of those who are working in the City to showcase the best of what Cork City has to offer to our local and international visitors.

Through stakeholder interaction and collaboration the Cork City Centre Forum will bring positive solutions to existing challenges and help make Cork City a better place to visit, work and shop. Key to this will be the delivery of Purple Flag Accreditation for the City, this is an internationally recognised award showing that Cork is both a safe and entertaining place to socialise with a thriving evening economy. Other issues that will be tackled include access to the City, parking and flooding and one of the more exciting projects the Forum is working on is a Long-Table Dinner planned for Oliver Plunkett Street next summer that will see the Street transformed to a dining room with businesses from the area contributing to the menu and the evening.

Cork Chamber hosted a successful meeting with new Minister with responsibility for the OPW, Simon Harris TD on Friday October 31st. The meeting follows ongoing engagement between Cork Chamber and the OPW in the design of the Lower Lee Flood Relief Scheme emerging preferred solution. The Chamber has made a number of submissions to date outlining concerns on certain aspects of the project and highlighting possible solutions.

The Minister has re-affirmed the governments commitment to fund the project as required and has further committed to ongoing and regular engagement with Cork Chamber and the region to ensure a transparent and cohesive rollout of the project. He has agreed to return to Cork in January and meet with the recently launched City Centre Forum group, business organisations and the City Council.

A further consultation on the emerging preferred solution will take place in March 2015 and before then Cork Chamber will be working with Cork City Council on some specific aspects of the project to ensure a suitable yet aesthetically pleasing solution is delivered in key areas of the City. The Chamber, and other stakeholders, will also be working to ensure that the construction phase of this project is rolled out in a clear and organised manner.

    Cork Flood relief Scheme Update

Cork Chamber welcomed a major jobs boost for the Cork I.T.sector recently, with four different companies set to create345 new jobs. SimpliVity has plans to hire 70 employees over a three-yearperiod at their Cork location, with plans for future expansion. Thenew jobs will be spread across a number of sectors with a rangeof activities such as Software Development, Telecoms, Internetand Digital and Social Media. OpenText, a global leader in Enterprise InformationManagement, also announced that they would be creating upto 105 highly skilled jobs over the next two years in Cork byexpanding its Global Customer Support Centre. They plan torecruit Technical Analysts with supporting language skills andsenior management roles. The Nimbus Centre at CIT is set to create 50 jobs, whichwill see over 150 people employed at the world class researchcentre by 2016. The centre is devoted to the field of networkedembedded electronic systems. Nimbus research has been grantedfunding of over 33 million through a wide range of fundingprogrammes and the past year has seen the centre receive over4.5m in funding from Enterprise Ireland and other groups.

A further 120 new jobs will be created by tech company Xanadu at their Blackpool office in Cork as a result of a major surge in demand for its online IT support services for the gaming industry. The expansion, officially announced by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, will see Xanadu who currently employs over 100 staff more than double. Finally, the sod to mark construction of a 200,000sq.ft office block at Albert Quay in Cork was turned by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny recently. The 50 million euro project will play a significant role in meeting the high demand for office space in the city centre. Already, specialist security company Tyco has secured space in the Albert Quay development to house their new global headquarters and the city centre location is seen as a crucial competitive advantage for Tyco in filling the 500 roles announced earlier this year. Commenting on the announcements Mr. Healy said, Cork is proving itself to be a location of choice for IT companies who are attracted by the large talent pool, leading R&D research facilitiesand the cluster of world class IT companies that are already based in Cork.

    Cork Chambers Dublin Dinner 2014

Darina Allen, owner of the Ballymaloe Cookery School, renowned teacher, food writer, cookbook author and television presenter was presented with an Outstanding Achievement in Business Award at Cork Chambers Dublin Dinner, in association with EY, at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel.

Speaking from the event, Gillian Keating, President of Cork Chamber said Now in its fourth year, this unique event hosts over 550 guests from across the businesses and political communities of Dublin and Cork to provide an opportunity for companies to network and strengthen connections with their peers. This year in particular we are pleased to be celebrating success from the Food industry, to further highlight the regions excellent resources which provide Cork with a solid foundation and valuable springboard from which to catapult itself onto the world stage as a leading player in agri-food and drinks sectors with resultant revenue and employment gains for the county and country.

More specifically we are delighted to add Darina Allen to the roll call of business leaders that we have honoured since the inauguration of this event four years ago, including Sean ODriscoll, of Glen Dimplex Group; Brian McCarthy, of Fexco and Leslie Buckley of INM, Digicel and Saongroup.

Ms. Keating added, Darina Allen in her capacity as owner of Ballymaloe Cookery School has put Irish Food on the world stage and has won many awards in her role as chef, food writer and teacher. But it is for her achievements as ambassador for Irish Food and the business acumen that she brings to that sector that

Cork Chamber are awarding her the Outstanding Achievement in Business Award. She sits at the table of the countries key representative bodies in the food movement including the Taste Council of Bord Bia, Chair of Artisan Food Forum, Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Member of the Advisory Board of Safefood, Trustee of Irish Organic Centre, Patron of Irish Seedsavers, Member of Euro-Toques (European Association of Chefs), Guild of Foodwriters in both UK and Ireland, Councillor for Slow Food Movement and founder of the first Irish Farmers Market in Ireland. John Higgins, Partner EY commented: The recent measures introduced in the budget to support the agri food sector are to be welcomed. The manufacture of food and drink products in Ireland is critically important to the Irish economy and is our largest indigenous industry with an annual turnover of about 25 billion and 230,000 employees across every townland in Ireland. Im personally delighted to see Cork Chamber supporting the industry by awarding Darina Allen for her commitment to the food industry in Ireland. EY is delighted to continue to support Cork Chambers Dublin Dinner highlighting the many success stories across a wide range of industries.

Speed Networking at the river Lee hotelCork Chamber in association with Arachas Corporate Brokers hosted a very energetic Speed Networking event at the River Lee Hotel on Thurs 23rd October. Close to 50 Chamber companies worked their way around the table and did their 3 minute speed network to great effect.

The event consists of 3 minute slots, where each side of the table must do their own pitch and after the bell rings, one side of the table moves to the left and the other remains stationary. Participants met close to 20 contacts due to this format, so an ideal event for anyone wanting to promote their business.

John Lonergan entered the prison service in 1968 and in the years that followed, as he saw human nature at its worst - and often, unexpectedly, at its best. Johns description of life in the prison service is not only a gripping account of humanity at its rawest, but is also invaluable for anyone in a management position anywhere.

business breakfasts in association with the Irish examiner

Cork Chamber held the fourth and final New Members Breakfast on Friday 7th November in the Hayfield Manor Hotel. The New Members Breakfasts take place four times per year, are run in association with AIB and are a fantastic opportunity for new

members of Cork Chamber to come and introduce themselves to fellow new members, the Chamber team and some key members of the AIB team also.

Cork Chamber New members breakfast Series 2014

David Duffy, Chief Executive, AIB, addressed an audience of Cork Chamber members at the October Business Breakfast in the Clarion Hotel.

Addressing wider economic issues, David warned against both complacency and worry in equal measure outlining how he felt we would experience a pendulum effect in growth varying from figures of 3-5% over the next few years. He also felt that growth figures in the 3% range were probably most sustainable in the long term.

Returning to matters inside AIB he made reference to a number of milestones the organisation had reached in recent times. The Bank was now well capitalised and in his opinion would and should be judged on how well it supports the economy. He outlined how AIB was returning to Banking as it once was with a strong focus on customer engagement. With 2.2 million customers serviced by 207 branches nationwide AIB has the largest footprint in the country.

Vodafone and ESB have welcomed European Commission approval of the creation of a joint venture company to deliver a 100% fibre-to-the-building broadband network for the first time in Ireland. The open access network, which will be available to all authorised broadband operators in the country, will help to propel Ireland into the ranks of the worlds fastest broadband countries and open up a new world of possibilities for Irish consumers and businesses.

ESB and Vodafone are investing 450M in the joint venture, which will utilise ESBs existing electricity infrastructure to deliver the fibre-to-the-building network across the country. The 100% fibre-to-the-building network will offer broadband speeds from 200 Mbps to 1000 Mbps, initially reaching 500,000 premises in 50 towns in phase one.

The two companies will now go about formally establishing the joint venture. Construction will commence early in the new year and phase one is expected to be fully rolled-out by the end of 2018, with further scope for a second phase thereafter. The first technical trials of the technology are already underway in two estates in Cavan town.

While the ESB and Vodafone joint venture will build and manage the fibre-to-the-building network, open access will be offered to all authorised operators in Ireland on a wholesale basis. This means that other operators can resell the fibre product to their customers, helping to stimulate the development of new services and boosting retail competition in the broadband market for all Irish consumers and businesses.

The Commissions decision was welcomed by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White TD, who said: This decision is great news for Irish broadband customers and providers as it will drive competition in the sector, while giving 50 towns nationwide access to a market leading, future proofed broadband service. Its an important project which complements the Governments National Broadband Plan to ensure that all of Irelands regions have access to fast broadband. It is also hugely significant in terms of the National Digital Strategy which aims to get more small businesses online. High speed broadband is a crucial element for Irelands future competitiveness and this project will help ensure that Ireland is better connected than most countries in the world.
