Wings to Fly 2014 Commissioning Ceremony. We believe. Its possible.

“You are never alone” Reeta Roy, President and CEO, The MasterCard Foundation

The MasterCard Foundation is very proud of the Wings to Fly initiative. Today, it shepherds thousands of young Kenyans through their secondary school education by providing tuition, social support and mentoring. Each of the Wings To Fly scholar we commission today has faced difficult, often daunting circumstances. But each of them had hope. Because of this hope, they know that if they work hard either in school or by lending a hand to their families or their communities their lives could improve. Scholars, you must work towards your life’s purpose. Do so with humility. Yes, it will take hard work and require personal sacrifices. Indeed, the most meaningful things in life demand the most of each of us. I am confident that you already have the courage and fortitude for this journey. What is exciting is that while you travel on your journey, you are never alone. You will meet people who will encourage, motivate and inspire you. And, you will have the opportunity to encourage, motivate and inspire others. Never travel alone, we are all here, to walk with you in your next academy journey in secondary school. I wish all the Wings To Fly scholars of 2014 the very best.

Each January we are delighted to select a new group of Wings To Fly scholars to join our growing number of beneficiaries who we give wings to embark on a journey we believe will take them into a bright future. The Wings To Fly Program is a partnership between Equity Group Foundation and The MasterCard Foundation, supported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department for International Development (DFID) and the German Development Cooperation through KfW. This year, we

are proud to announce that we have reached our target of 10,000 scholarships, a goal we set for 2015 but have achieved in 2014. We are profoundly grateful to our partners and sponsors for this success.

This year we have selected 2,000 bright scholars from poor homes. Our journey with them, as with those before them, began with the selection process and culminated in home visits. With members of the District Scholarship Selection Board (DSSB), we had occasion to briefly enter into their world. We left humbled and touched by the students’ spirit of resilience and hope for a better future, maintained in the face of great odds. This group joins the 6,400 scholars already in the program. I thank the DSSBs, the staff of Equity Bank and Equity Group Foundation for their deep commitment and support of these children. They act as guardians and treat the scholars as they would their own.

The prospect for a bright future that each of our scholars hopes for is becoming clear with the success that is unfolding with the pioneer class of 2010. Their 4-year high school journey came to an end in November 2013 after sitting for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). We were most delighted to welcome 35 of the top performers to Equity Bank, for their first job as interns, in December 2013. The anticipation in their eyes on the first day of entry into the program has now been replaced with pride and confidence that the future they hoped for is becoming real. We have interacted with them and watched them settle in their new

roles as professionals and as benefactors to their families. We are so proud to have been a part of their journey so far.

As they graduate into the Equity African Leaders Program they will find others ahead of them, some of who are realizing their dreams. We have a total of 1,550 scholars in this program; over 100 have studied or are in world leading universities. This year we were delighted by the early university admission decisions for 11 of our scholars. Congratulations!

All these scholars continue to teach us that hard work, a single mindedness to succeed, belief in self and God do transform. As we change their lives, they too change ours through their stories of courage, resilience and hope.

Motivated by the profound impact the Wings to Fly Program is having in transforming our young scholars, Equity Group Foundation will be launching a second phase of the program. We shall reach out to Kenyans to support the education of more deserving gifted children, to offer hope for a bright and prosperous future for their families and our country.

“This year, 2,000 scholars begin their journey of changing their lives, while changing Kenya” Dr Helen Gichohi, Managing Director, Equity Group Foundation

Wings to Fly 2014 Commissioning Ceremony. We believe. Its possible.

Education is a key driver of development. There is no greater force in transformation and development of a society than the development of its people. Education is not equal to academics. It is equal to the full integrated transformation of the person, from their value systems, beliefs, insights, reference, exposure and their reasoning and also from their evolution.

The African paradox is about a continent endowed heavily with resources, but crippled

by poverty. Africa is a very rich and a very poor continent at the same time. Poverty denotes a low quality of life. A significant number of the African population lives below the poverty line. This can be interpreted to mean that the African people largely lack skills and competencies to unlock and utilize the vast resources in the continent as a means of eradicating poverty.

Poverty is a life of scarcity, it is a life of denial, a life of struggles, a life of survival. This scenario can be reversed through enhancement of opportunities through education of people. Education enhances the capacity of people to reach, tap and unlock opportunities.

As outlined in the Kenya’s Vision 2030, the country envisages to have transformed into a middle level economy with high quality of life for the citizenry. Access to education will play a significant role in realizing this goal. No doubt that the current government and the previous government have placed a key emphasis and support to education.

The investment in education by Equity Bank and Equity Group Foundation was informed by our believe in the impact of education in transformation of society. So far the 1550 university scholars have passed through the Bank Equity African Leaders Programme (EALP) with 100 of them so far attending some of the world’s leading universities. The Bank believes that by getting quality education along some of the

best brains in the world, these scholars will get global exposure, access to education resources and enhance their leadership skills, in readiness to come back and contribute in shaping the social economic development of Africa.

As we witnessed the transformational power of this programme, we reflected on how we could diversify and benefit more young people by bridging the gap between free primary education and access to secondary school education. This gave rise to the Wings To Fly program.

The Wings To Fly program was inspired by our shared vision and belief that the destiny of young people is not tied to the current circumstances of their parents and that young people have the potential to break the cycle of poverty and change their destiny, that of their families and society if given access to education and leadership skills. We thank UKaid, USAID, KfW as well as several individuals and corporate organizations who have believed in our dream and joined this partnership between The MasterCard Foundation and Equity Group Foundation. We are truly proud to see that the target of 10,000 scholarships that we set in 2010 has been achieved one year ahead of the target date of 2015.

Convinced that the Wings To Fly program will ultimately transform every village in Kenya, Equity Group Foundation has committed to roll out a second phase of the Wings to Fly program. In this phase, and owing to the positive embrace that this program has received from Kenyans, we have made a provision for every individual and organization to participate in scaling up the impact of this program. We have therefore created a donation platform where everyone wishing to touch the life of a deserving and bright Kenyan child can make a donation. We are very hopeful that together we can bequeath Kenya a legacy of creating a generation of world citizens with a mentality of abundance, bound together by national pride, determined to create a better world and maintain peaceful coexistence with all communities and people across all walks of life.

Profiles of some of our top-achieving EALP ScholarsJob Nalianya

The country was shocked when Job Nalianya was named the top student in the nation for the 2011 KCSE examinations. This determined young man from St. Peter’s Seminary School, a small school in Kakamega County, managed to top students from the well-known academic powerhouse schools around the country. In March 2012, Job joined the Equity African Leadership Program (EALP) along with over 200 of the country’s best and brightest young men and women topping the KCSE examinations in their respective districts. Job then joined Equity Bank as an intern working in Bungoma Branch.

Emmanuela AlimlimEmmanuela Alimlim comes from a humble background in Maralal, Samburu County. Her mother and father separated

when she was only 7 years old, and since then she and her four siblings have struggled to get by. After finishing primary school, Emmanuela sought work from local religious women, cutting grass in the church compound, cleaning the halls, and washing clothes, all in order to save for her secondary school fees.

With the help of support of her Principal at St. Theresa’s Girls Secondary School in Wamba, Samburu, Emmanuela was able to complete her secondary school education. When the KCSE results were announced in 2012, Emmanuela not only emerged the top girl in Samburu County, but the top overall student, despite the lack of appreciation for girl child education in the region. She then joined the Equity African Leaders Program and began her internship with Equity Bank working in Maralal Branch.

Today, with the help of the college counseling program at Equity Group Foundation, Job and Emmanuela are both pursuing their undergraduate degree overseas. In September 2013, Job began his course in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Stanford University in the United States, while Emmanuela began her course in Economics and Finance at the University of Toronto in Canada, on a full scholarship from The MasterCard Foundation.

Started in 1998 by Equity Bank and now managed by Equity Group Foundation (EGF), the Equity African Leaders Program (EALP) is a rigorous internship-based leadership development program which works to create a community of talented leaders who are capable of solving the world’s most pressing challenges. EALP selects the top boy and the top girl in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations from every district where Equity Bank has a branch and provides them with paid internship opportunities and a college savings scheme to help finance their studies. EALP also invites top scholars attending global institutions to join the program through an internship experience. To date, EALP has benefited over 1,550 scholars through programming activities aimed at developing each scholar in three thematic areas: Academic Vitality, Professional Development and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Of these 130 scholars have attended or are currently attending leading international institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, Stanford, William and the African Leadership Academy. Notable EALP programs and initiatives include the following: • In 2013, 35 graduating Wings To Fly scholars with exemplary scores in

their mock examination joined EALP and began interning at Equity Bank branches across the country.• In 2014, an additional 11 EquityScholars have received admission to leading world universities under the “early decision” scheme. We expect this number to rise after regular admissions later in the year.• Launched a virtual academy in2012 for Equity Scholars with over 300 scholars enrolled.• Started Equity Innovators, a businessinnovation program for Equity Scholars, in 2012.• Founded three Equity Centres ofExcellence: Kwale Girls Secondary

School, Nyawara Girls Secondary School and Nyagatugu Boys Secondary School, where Equity Scholars mentoring the high school students have registered gains in overall KCSE performance.• Over 500 Equity Scholars are mentors toWings to Fly scholars across the country, giving them inspiration and motivation to excel.• Scholars have gone on to become leading business executives andentrepreneurs. Notable scholars and alumni include Samuel Kirubi, the first scholar under the program, who is currently CEO of Equity Bank Rwanda, Diana Mong’are, 1st Runner Up of the 2012 Anzisha Innovation Prize and Lavender Birike, a 2012 recipient of the Moody-Stuart Scholarship to Cambridge University. In executing these programs, EALP aims to create a community of change agents – working together to champion the socio-economic transformation of Africa. Our belief is that by offering scholars the opportunity to grow as individuals and as a community, we will bring about a domino effect, where they will take over the job of driving development forward in Kenya and Africa.

Since 1998, 1550 students have received University Sponsorships and leadership training

Wings to Fly Scholarship Program

I commend the Kenyan Government for their decision to grant free primary school education which has enabled a large number of students access to primary school education.

But not every gifted child has access to secondary education, because many families cannot afford to pay school fees. Therefore, more needs to be done to bring the country to the next level and to allow bright and brilliant students, especially from needy families and marginalized regions in Kenya to attend secondary schools and universities.

The Wings To Fly Scholarship Programme of ther Equity Group Foundation helps to fill this gap. It helps to create more opportunities and more equality in access to higher education. And it is guided by a vision of transforming leadership in Kenya. German Development Cooperation through KfW, the German Development Bank, is proud to partner with Equity Group Foundation in this endeavor.

I wish the 2014 Wings To Fly scholars we are commissioning today the very best in their studies and urge them to always strive harder to be a step further from their current status.

“Always strive harder.” His Excellency Andreas Peschke German Ambassador to Kenya

“We believe in empowering the youth through education.” His Excellency Dr Christian Turner British High Commissioner to Kenya

Over the next three years, the UK Government aims to invest more than Ksh 8.4 billion in Kenyan schools to support as many as 300,000 children get a high quality education. Our goal is to partner with you to ensure that every child in Kenya, and

particularly those in the arid and semi-arid lands and non-formal settlements, get the education they need to realise their goals. Empowering youth through education is key to Kenya’s economic growth, democracy, stability and security.

I would like to once again celebrate the remarkable success of the Wings To Fly programme. Today, 10,000 more young people will be provided with scholarships and through these gain the opportunity to transform their own lives and the lives of their families and communities. You are an inspiration to us all and I wish you every success in the coming years. The UK is proud to be a part of this initiative.

This year is, of course, the 50th anniversary of Kenya’s independence. It is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the impressive progress your country has made. But it also an opportunity to consider the future. And is an opportunity for each of you to commit yourselves to your education, to commit to becoming the doctors, politicians, business people, and scientists who make Kenya’s hope of a bright tomorrow, the hope expressed in Vision 2030, a reality. Education is the road to that tomorrow.

As you journey down that road, know this. You are not alone. I know your family, friends, businesses such as Equity Bank, the government of Kenya, so many people across this great nation are with you. So, too are the government and people of the United States. We believe in the possibility and potential of Kenya’s young people. We believe in you. Helping Kenya’s students is a fundamental part of the partnership between our two countries.

“There are few if any investments we make in life that are more important than our children... The United States is committed to Wings to Fly, a partnership to ensure the children of Kenya have access to the quality education they need to be the leaders of tomorrow.”US Ambassador to Kenya, His Excellency, Robert F. Godec

Wings to Fly Scholarship Program

These dreamsAmidst the rubble and despair;

Dashed dreams and hopes;A light shone.

***Light peered into the darkness;

A hand reached out and pulled me up;Gave me wings to conquer.

***Now I stand at the doorstep of promise;

The world brimming with hope;My life ablaze with possibility.

***I could be a scientist;

A pilot, a doctor, a philanthropist;An entrepreneur.

***There are worlds to conquer;

People to reach, transformation to bring;My community to touch.

***Thank you for these dreams;

For the wings to soar!I am the world, and the world is me.
