Wingate School Tenerife KS3 Newsletter - June / Lockdown 2020 -4th Edition WELCOME If you have a story about our KS3 pupils that you would like to share please let me know via email: jane.hopewell@winga teschool.com Give yourself a pat on the back, we have almost made it to the end of a most unusual and very difficult term! This is down to the massive combined efforts of staff, students and parents / guardians. On Thursday the 12th of March, school closed for what we thought would be 2 weeks. We had short meetings with pupils briefing them on the possibility of online lessons and staff quickly pulled together to share ideas and discuss the upcoming few unprecedented online weeks! As the weeks went on and online lessons began in earnest it was amazing to see the fantastic dedication of the pupils (and their new parent-teachers) to Book week Before online lessons began, the English department organised a fantastic Book Week event. Pupils joined in a range of activities across the week including - Drop Everything and Read, designing a book cover for their form classroom, a set the scene competition and more! Below are some highlights from the lead up as well as World Book Day itself: Literary Character Costumes: In form groups pupils picked a book together and on World Book Day turned up to school as one of the characters. The pupils made an amazing effort! Some of the costumes are below… Can you guess the book and Literary Characters from it? Members of 8JM

Give yourself a pat on         the back, we have       almost made it to the         end of a most       unusual and very     difficult term! As the weeks went on         and online lessons     began in earnest it       was amazing to see       the fantastic   dedication of the     pupils (and their new       parent-teachers) to

their online lessons.     Many pupils went     above and beyond     what was expected of       them.   Pupils joined in on all         requests made by     teachers, and   although it has been       tough with poor     internet connections,   lots of worry     surrounding the   pandemic and   organisational skills   being put to the test,         Wingate pupils have     shown what the     Wingate Way really is       and have exceeded     our expectations!  Well done - have a         great Summer break!  Mrs J Hopewell Head of KS3   [email protected]

Dates for your Diary: Just a reminder of events coming up that you may wish to put in your planners:  On Friday the 26th

June we will be

awarding pupils from

year 7-10 with online

certificates for most

improved and highest

attainer in each

subject in each set /

form group.

Make sure you tune

into the awards

ceremony in the

talent masterclass!     Mrs Hopewell Head of KS3 [email protected]

Set the scene competition: Pupils had to design a scene from their favorite book - they could present the scene in any medium they choose. There were some fantastic entries but the winner was a video from Zulaya (year 8) with a scene from Harry Potter. Taha (year 9) was a highly commended entry depicting a scene from Star Wars:

Creative writing A creative writing competition summoned a whole host of emotions from all who listened to or read the entries - Wingate pupils have such a way with words! Gina´s writing about the horrors of war and PTSD was one of the year 9 winners:  Peace and silence. That’s something I’m not used to. Birds singing blissfully in the

lush emerald treetops, is

music to my ears. My eyes,

blessed by the crystalline

water. The reflection of fluffy

clouds drifting in the sapphire

sky is ever so dreamy. I can

still feel the gunshot wound

that pierced through my soul.

Suddenly, the beautiful

landscape of forest slipped

away into a war zone once

again. Soldiers falling, life

draining from their eyes,

blood soaking the battlefield. Never did I think I would make it out alive and witness

such graceful wilderness surrounding me. Though war is the past, the horrors still

haunt me greatly.

Charity Week

The final week of the Spring Term should have been the annual Charity Week

where different year groups find ways to support a number of different charities

with their time, effort and donations.

The lockdown meant, sadly, this was not possible this year. I know a number of

pupils were sad not to support these worthy causes.

The year 7s were meant to be working with FACT - a cancer charity, they decided to

support this charity in another way- with messages of support. Below are some of

the heartfelt things pupils said to the cancer sufferers support by FACT:

(Check out the full video on the WIngate School Facebook page):

Lucas: You are a fighter... Don´t give up.

Kirsten: You are so strong and brave, keep fighting.

Vlad: Hope you get strong and healthier so you can play again with your family.

The year 8s were meant to be taking a donation of food up to the Banco de

Alimentos de Tenerife - a food bank in the North. The food bank wishes to thank

the pupils and parents of Wingate School who were able to make a kind donation

to the food bank. Your donations have helped many families who are in dire need

at the moment.

Transition Lessons The year 6 cohort are eagerly awaiting joining KS3.

Mrs Tolfrey, Ms Colegrove and Mrs Hopewell have been facilitating some extra

English, Maths and Science online lessons with this year group.

The year 6s have taken these lessons in their stride and have produced some

outstanding work at very high levels.

We can't wait to welcome them properly into year 7 in September!

Below is a snapshot of what they have been doing in these lessons:

English - Mrs Tolfrey.

It has been such a pleasure getting to know the year 6 students who have all worked with such enthusiasm, attending and actively taking part in all online lessons. It has been so heartwarming to see how they have volunteered to support each other, sharing their individual skill sets. I have been especially impressed with the ‘A Day in the Life of’ project, where students were asked to create a presentation or video diary of a chosen animal. Here are a few examples of their work.

Maths- Ms Colegrove The year 6 pupils have been experiencing online learning in preparation for year 7 mathematics. They must carefully follow instructions on how to load specific pages of the maths book and then read the questions carefully before answering them. When the work is complete, showing all their calculations, they must take a picture and upload this to the classroom for marking by me. The students have participated with enthusiasm, asking for more help if they needed it and have been competently using Google Meets. This is an important step towards the self discipline of reading carefully, looking for specific details and following instructions. All skills which are imperative to achieving in the seniors. Science - Mrs Hopewell The scientists in year 6 have astounded me with their level of commitment to this subject - some even trying out some of the experiments in their own homes! We have looked at a number of chemistry topics including chemical reactions, acids and alkalis and indicators. A few pieces of great work can be seen below: Liam - the pH scale

Isha- Acids and alkalis in the home

Talent Masterclass As well as pupils continuing to complete class work, we have also tried to engage

pupils with extra curricular activities in the Talent Masterclass. We asked pupils to

post videos of themselves teaching something to others. We had a great response

from pupils. Below are some screenshots from their fantastic videos:

Abiha (year 7) showed off her amazing cookery skills with these lovely carrot

cupcakes:

Amelia (year 8) informed the pupils on the 2nd of April it was Autism Awareness Day! Impressively she set herself the task of relearning Makaton, a sign language used by some disabled people, in addition to BSL .She also added a video for anyone wanting to learn more about Autism.  What an asset to Wingate School she is!

of the hard work you have put in!

A special mention to Mr Reilly, who I am sure both the pupils and his fellow

members of staff will miss, as he moves on to pastures new next year! Good Luck in

your new job!
