Fellow Winos,

You are now witnessing the second wave of the American wine revolution. What started in Napa Valley in the sixties with a rag-tag bunch of winemakers has evolved into a national movement of increased wine appreciation and production in the U.S. The torch is now being passed from these “Founding Fathers” to you and I —the next generation of wine drinkers. We are responsible for the massive rise in vino consumption in recent years, and we are now responsible for taking the American grape game to the next level.

Knowledge is power, especially when you’re wading through a sea of over 250 wines at The Wine Riot. At our Crash Course Seminars, you can learn about regions like France, Italy and California and meet producers who are creating local ciders and eco-friendly wines. At our Wine Intelligence Unit (WIU) booth, Boston wine experts will help to answer your fermented-grape-related questions. And at each table at the Courthouse, you can consult with passionate winemakers and reps who know their stuff inside and out.

We encourage you to learn as much as you can and pass that info on to your friends and family. Together, we can get the entire country to drink more wine!

Special thanks to Kim Tavares at the Court-house, Maria of The Daily Catch, The Isosceles Group for putting up with the loud kids down the hall, Shannon, Jess, Christopher, Steven and the entire Exemplar Law team for helping us kick ass! Finally, thanks to all of our exhibitors who bought into this rowdy throwdown and our fantastic volunteers and volunteer captains - we couldn’t do this without you!

ABout the CoVErThroughout history, successful revolutions have been accompanied by powerful and iconic imagery. For the first Wine Riot in April, our cover artist looked to Soviet propaganda posters for inspiration to create an image of young people taking over the means of wine production for themselves (and it had nothing to do with Shepard Fairey, we promise). For Wine Riot II, we’ve adopted an American Revolution theme and, since our event is on Boston’s waterfront, we chose “George Washington Crossing the Delaware” by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. The original painting depicts General Washington leading troops across the

Delaware River into the Battle of Trenton the day after Christmas in 1776. The message behind our image? The wine world is changing for the better, and with your help, this generation is leading the charge. Join the revolution. Drink more wine!

CrAsh CoursEsWiNEKnowledge will be dropped during free Crash Course Semi-nars. Courses occur throughout the Riot sessions, dishing in-depth explanations of specific grapes, regions, and grow-ing trends. Rioters can stop in for complimentary guided tastings and head back to the main floor equipped with stellar tips and know-how to help them face any wine list, party or store.

Bubbilicious: Sparkling Wine from Around the WorldRoom A at 1:30pm/8:00pmCristal is for hip hop videos and rapper wannabes. There’s a world of bubbly outside of Champagne. This class will introduce you to some of the best sparkling wines coming out of Austria, Spain, Italy, and even the US of A.

Chocolate Thunder: Pairing Wine and ChocolateRoom A 2:00pm/8:30pmIn the world of wine pairing, cheese and fruits are the typical fare, but chocolate? Get it right and it’s pure delight, but get it wrong, and it’s “in your face disgrace.” (Free chocolate bar to the first person to correctly indentify the origin of this phrase.)

A Wine Whose Name Cannot Be SpokenRoom A 2:30pm/9:00pmHungary has been making tasty dessert wines and red currant-inflected reds since the days of the Roman Empire. With names like Kiralyleanyka and Harslevelu, Hungarian wines can be hard to pronounce—but rest assured, they go down easy.

Real Deals From the Southern RhoneRoom A at 3/3:30/4pm + 6:30/7/7:30pmFrench wines don’t have to be overly fussy or super- expensive. David Milligan takes you on a virtual tour of the Southern Rhone River Valley, reviewing labels and vintages that give you the best value for your money.

Bin Ends | Room ABin Ends offers tremendous deals on close-outs with a Filene’s Basement style pricing system—which means owner and wine buyer John Hafferty knows a good deal when he sees it.

David Milligan | Room AWine importer and writer David Milligan has been bringing stellar wines into the U.S. since 1996. He started with French wines, then became an expert on up-and-coming regions like South Africa and Chile, with an eye for wines with great taste and terroir.

Farnum Hill Ciders | Room BThis New Hampshire producer makes crisp, traditional ciders from vintage apple varieties, helping to preserve the country’s biodiversity and bringing you some deliciously alcoholic brews that are perfect for fall sipping and food pairing.

It’s Like Wine, but from ApplesRoom B at 1:30/2/2:30pm + 8/8:30/9Johnny Appleseed didn’t truck his seeds across the frontier so the pioneers could make pie. Early settlers depended on his trees to make apple-based booze. Farnum Hill has continued this proud tradition with their cidermaking outfit. In this crash course, we’ll taste a variety of cider apples, sip finished ciders, and debunk the Johnny Appleseed myth along the way.

Yellow + Blue | Room BIn 20 years, many of the wine-makers of the world will (we hope) look a lot like Yellow + Blue. With their organically-grown grapes and eco-friendly packag-ing (yellow and blue combine to make green, get it?), this Califor-nia outfit is blazing a trail for other vintners to follow. ybwines.com

Eco-Minded Wines of the FutureRoom B at 3/3:30/4pm + 6:30/7/7:30pmIf you think farmers are sexier than bankers and bicycles are better than cars, you’ll want to sit in on this crash course, where you’ll learn as much about the way wine is produced as you will about the way it tastes. Yellow + Blue CEO Matt Cain, who’s earned accolades from trendwatchers like Forbes, Fast Company and TastingTable for his innovative techniques, will divulge all the juicy details on starting his company, from sourcing organic grapes in South America to getting customers to drink wines from a Tetra-pack container.

Stop and Smell the German WinesRoom C 1:30/3pm + 6:30/8pmWines from Germany rarely get the attention they deserve. Yes, the labels and lingo are a bit complicated, but that only means you get high quality, delicious wines for less cash. Learn the key to unlocking some of Europe’s best white wines.

Bordeaux is Far from BoringRoom C 2/3:30 + 7/8:30pm It’s not all bitches and bling in the wine world’s Beverly Hills. For hundreds of years this region has set the world’s standard for fine wine. The home of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot has a long history and a very interesting future. Chianti: Get That Dirt Off Your ShoulderRoom C 2:30/4 + 7:30/9pmVintage clothes are IN so why not old school wines? From a land of tradition and old wineries comes one of the world’s most ubiquitous yet least-understood wines. Get the low-down on a cat that’s been cool for centuries.

Whether you’re a wine novice or a seasoned wino, it can be quite the challenge to wade through a sea of over 250 wines. It’s for this reason we’ve created the Wine Intelligence Unit (WIU); a rag-tag

crew of local wine buyers, certified wine experts and seasoned sommeliers. Stop by with basic questions, rack their brains for their favorite wines at ‘The Riot’ or have them map out a personal tour. These winos are are at your disposal, armed with encyclopedic knowledge of everything related to fermented grape juice. Remember, no question is too “basic” or “simple” and no request is too large. Use this crew to make sure you conquer the Riot!

Sing, dance, take funny pictures, make new friends – but

above all, stay on your feet! Make the best of your time at the Riot with these tips:

driNk MorE WiNE! (but don’t go overboard)

Whether you’re sitting in on a Crash Course, chatting up the members of our Wine Intelli-gence Unit, or planning your next vineyard road trip with the local winemaker who’s pouring you a glass of bubbly at one of our booths, you’ll have the opportunity to learn interesting facts about wine that you wouldn’t pick up elsewhere. These people came here to answer your ques-tions and teach you about the delicious wines and all the background info--and it’s rare to have so many of them all in one room. So be sure to take advantage of their insight and ask questions, even as you’re holding out your glass for another sample of that killer Sauv Blanc.

You can’t get enough water in your system. Bottled water is provided free of charge at the Riot by Polar Water. Drink as much of it as you can! It will keep your body healthy and you on the dance floor -- not on the floor of the bathroom. It will also help you feel a lot better tomorrow morning.

Tweet, text or and post hilarious pictures on Face-book -- and be sure to chat, flirt or exchange cards with the real person next to you while you’re at it. It’s time to put the “social” in “social drinker”!

Marathon runners aren’t the only ones who need to carbo-load before the big event. Snacking before and throughout the Riot will help absorb all that vino so you don’t find yourself stumbling after a few sips. We make this easy at the Riot with scrumptious samples from The Savant Project, The Daily Catch and Tavolo. Eat up!
