Be Careful with that glyphosate (Roundup)
(Left ) FYI: Grape sucker sprouts accidently hit with
glyphosate (Roundup) EARLY in the season seldom
causes much damage. All growth is fast and upward
and little of the glyphosate seems to get into the
grape vine.
But,…sometime around early-June (pea sized
berries), the potential for injury increases. Often the
injury will show up even next year as in this case of
sucker sprouts hit with glyphosate in July of 2011 in
this Central Iowa vineyard. 6-13-12

Show n Tell
On Wednesday and Thursday of this week Dr. Keith Striegler of Flint Ridge Winegrowing Services
in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Dr. Tim Martinson from Cornell University in New York stopped in
Iowa on their tour of Midwest grape nurseries and Northern Grapes Project research vineyards. Keith
was visiting with some Midwest nurseries for the National Clean Plant Network, an organization set
up by the 2008 USDA Farm Bill to develop volunteer procedures and oversight that help provide
pathogen free specialty crop nursery stock. Tim heads up the Northern Grapes Project and was
checking in on the many research trials being conducted here in the Upper Midwest. Here are a few
pictures of their visit:
(Right) These pictures of Grape
Filbert Galls caused by the gall
maker midge Schizomyia
coryloides were sent to me by a
Central Iowa grower. Somewhat
of an unusual pest of grapes.
These hairy green bud galls
apparently develop from leaf buds
since they appear opposite the
tendril on the grape twig.
Not a problem. Just prune them
off. 6-12-12
(Left) L-R Dr. Keith Striegler,
Stan Olson – Penoach Vineyard,
Nursery & Winery in Adel, IA,
Dr. Gail Nonnecke – ISU, Dr.
Paul Domoto – ISU, Dylan
Rolfes – ISU graduate student and
Dr. Tim Martinson – Cornell
University discuss nursery
practices and the research Dylan
is doing on the front patio of
Penoach Winery.. Stan Olson is a
cooperator with the Northern
Grapes Project.
Dylan is doing research with
canopy management practices on
Frontenac and Marquette and
their cost effectiveness. 6-13-12

(Above) The group stops by to visit with Bill
James (center) at his vineyard north of Adel,
IA. Dylan is doing Northern Grapes Project
research and demonstration trails with 4
different trellis systems: Single High Wire,
Geneva Double Curtain, Vertical Shoot
Positioned and Scott Henry. 6-13-12
(Above) The weekly collection of volatile
grape compounds via gas collection bags
over the grapes as they mature is another
Northern Grapes Project research trial
being conducted at the ISU Horticulture
Farm located north of Ames. 6-14-12
(Above) Solid Phase Micro Extractors
(SPME) are used to collect gases from
the plastic bags. Many of the volatile
gases produced by grapes as they ripen
are associated with flavor and quality
components in the grape. This research
could lead to a “quick sniff” test to
determine when to pick based on grape
ripeness, acidity, brix and flavor
compounds. 6-14-12
(Above) Dr. Jacek Koziel of ISU Ag
Engineering & Biosystems and his graduate
students are doing the gas extraction research.
The SPME tubes are wrapped in foil and taken
back to Jacek’s lab where gas chromatography
and mass spectrometry is used to determine the
amounts and types of volatile gasses collected.
The same machine that sniffs manure for volatile
gasses is used to sniff grapes for volatile gases.
Some of the gases are actually the same, but in
different concentrations! 6-14-12
