Windsor Girls’ School
15 December 2017
Carol Concert
TEXT
On Thursday, we had our sixth Windsor Girls’ School Carol Concert at Holy Trinity, Garrison Church in Windsor. There were approximately 180 performers taking part, either singing or playing in the band. There was a mixture of traditional and contemporary Christmas music. It was great to see so many parents, past students and governors in the congregation.

Dear Parents and Carers, There have been a number of activities taking place this week, and towards the end of this week we have been celebrating the end of term and looking forward to Christmas. Year 11 were pleased to have finished their Internal Examinations and to submit their applications for the Sixth Form. We will be sharing their results with them at the end of our first week back. Interviews for the Sixth Form will take place in Term 3. Year 12 and 13 Product Design students had the opportunity to visit a visionary project which is using unusual materials to construct a house. They were able to try their hand at house building and met with the architect to see the design and building process first-hand. We were pleased to dispatch our final UCAS applications this week, and it is pleasing to see that so many students are holding offers from their chosen universities. For students still waiting to hear back from universities, we hope you hear soon, but remember, some universities will wait until the final deadline of 15 January before making any offers. Throughout this week, we have been celebrating achievement across the different subject areas through assemblies. Students have been awarded certificates and been recognised in Year assemblies. This was a new addition this year, and students have really appreciated the termly focus on achievement. On Wednesday this week, we had a whole school Christmas lunch. This was very popular with students and staff who enjoyed a full turkey or vegetarian Christmas dinner, and a dessert of profiteroles. Tables were set with table cloths and crackers, and Christmas music in the background made for a great atmosphere. This is sure to become a new Windsor Girls’ tradition. Our annual Carol Concert took place on Thursday at Holy Trinity, Garrison Church in Windsor. This whole school event is always a wonderful way to end the term and this year did not disappoint. The quality of performances, and the number of pieces, was so impressive and it was good to see so many parents and grandparents attending. The students involved in the choir and band have had so many commitments over the last few weeks and will also be performing at the Windsor Boys’ School Carol Concert on Friday. They have done a great job. We end Term 2 with students and staff wearing Christmas jumpers for charity, the newly formed staff band at break one, and the staff pantomime before the early finish at 12:45pm. It has been a really successful term with so many great opportunities for our students. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2018, when we return on 2 January. Mrs G Labrum

The Cork House, Eton
Mr Loraine and a group of 6th Form Product Design students visited Mr Matthew Barnett Howland, who is an architect, and was previously a WGS governor. He is currently undertaking a project which focuses on using cork as a primary material to build a house. Students had the opportunity to see first-hand how smart materials come together to construct an eco-friendly house; with all parts being able to be reused. A few of the students had the opportunity to lay the cork bricks and experience first-hand how the walls lock together on the house.
Christmas Cookery
All years have been busy preparing Christmas treats in their Food Technology lessons. Practising many skills that will help them in their courses – having fun along the way! Year 10 also produced some amazing results in Christmas Cookery Club. We look forward to running a Cookery Club for Year 9 in the New Year.
Bake Off - The Final
After school on Thursday, a group of very excited Year 9 and 10 students gathered in order to take part in “The Inter-house Bake-Off” The first round involved the “Technical Challenge”. All students followed the same recipe to produce the perfect Lemon Drizzle cake. After creaming, cracking of eggs and drizzling, 11 amazing cakes were produced. These were then tested by the Senior Leadership Team . One successful student from each house then cooked a Showstopper. We all had to bake a cake in the theme of Christmas. We were all very excited but nervous and desperate to perform well for our houses. The two hours went really quickly, with mixing, baking, piping and decorating. The cakes were displayed at Break and many students from our houses admired the cakes. The cakes were judged for taste, texture and decoration. It was a very close contest and we all enjoyed the competition. We are ready to compete again in the next competition. - Maleeha Chandar & Felicity Mounch, Year 9
Festive German Baking
Year 9 Science
On Monday afternoon, the German A level students, of both years, took part in an exciting baking session. We began by making traditional "Vanille-Kipferln" (the moon-shaped cookies), and finished by baking some delicious "Linzer Weihnachtsplätzchen" (the festive shaped cookies). The competition to make the best delicacies was tough; however the judges - Dr Bachorz and Ms Skinner - tasted the authentic biscuits and were very impressed. Joseph Bristow, Year 12
9/4 Science were set a challenge to create a newsletter entry about Mitosis which they have been studying in lesson. Two entries really stood out and they were from Hermione Varley and Malaikah Hamid; they will be awarded a Subject Leader Commendation for their efforts.
MITOSIS by Hermione Varley 94
This is what we have been learning in biology, but first lets take note of some keywords. MITOSIS is the name of making new cells. The new cells are genetically identical to the original cell. SPINDLES are like sticks that come out of the poles of the cells. So the first step to take place is INTERPHASE. In this step the cells are just resting. The next step is PROPHASE. This is where the chromosomes copy each other and cross over to make X shapes. The first step is METAPHASE this is where the spindles connect to the chromosomes across the equator of the cell. The second to last step is called ANAPHASE. This is the part where to spindles pull half the chromosomes to each end of the cell. This is where the nucleus begins to reform. The last stage is called TELOPHASE. This is where the cell completely separates through the middle, forming two identical cells
These models were made my myself, Hermione Varley and Maleeha Chandhar.
The Giving Tree Donations
Aspiring High
Thank you for the donations to the Giving Tree. There was a fantastic response to the appeal to support families in Berkshire. Sarah Jeffery, Co-ordinator of the appeal has asked us to pass on her thanks saying “a huge thank you to the girls and their families, they will be making a huge difference to the children and families we are collecting for this Christmas”. Items were deposited at the depot in the basement of the Oracle in Reading, and our items covered the whole of their entrance hall.
On Monday, former WGS student, Ellie Woodbin, and her colleague, Amandeep Bains, from Microsoft visited our Aspiring High group to speak to the students about career options in the tech industries and beyond. Our students found out more about placements and internships, which they can use to enhance their careers and improve their job prospects. They worked in groups to explore various products and to evaluate their usefulness for a range of professional settings. Each group was given a specific role – a hospital, a football club, a school – and had to present their analyses to the rest of the group. We were impressed by the thoughtful detailed analyses, which the groups presented confidently. It was wonderful to see a former student coming back to inspire our students to leave their comfort zone and see where it takes them! Mrs Jenkins & Dr Bachorz
