Merry Christmas!

Dear Parents and Carers, Our annual Carol Concert took place on Thursday at Holy Trinity, Garrison Church in Windsor. This whole school event is always a wonderful way to end the term and this year did not disappoint. The quality of performances, and the number of pieces, was so impressive and it was good to see so many parents, grandparents and carers attending. The students and staff involved in the choir and band have had so many commitments over the last few weeks and will also be performing at the Windsor Boys’ School Carol Concert today. They have done a great job and are a credit to the school. We end Term 2 with students and staff wearing Christmas jumpers for charity, the newly formed staff band at break one, and the staff pantomime before the early finish at 12:45pm. After Christmas, we will be sharing internal examination results with Year 11, the Mock Magistrates will begin preparations for the competition and there will be further trips and experiences for our students. It has been a really successful term with so many great opportunities for our students. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2020, when we return on 6 January. Mr P Griffiths and Mrs E O’Carroll Co-Headteachers

Year 9 Debating

‘On Monday, 9 December, the Year 9 debate team held an afterschool debate on the motion: “This house believes that social media should be banned for under eighteens”; organised by Miss Armstrong. The debate was judged by our two co-headteachers, Mr Griffiths and Mrs O’Carroll, and by Mr Arbi. Nawshin Shelim was the chairperson of the debate and Terri Hofacker was the timekeeper. On the proposition side, our three speakers were Ashwin Kular, Leilani Ijeoma and Yasmeen Elgamri, with the note-taker being Sarah Jessopp. On the opposition side, our three speakers were Anna Wadley, Fatima Altaf and Sinead Denwood, with the note-taker being Elena Kratsis. The format of the debate meant that there were periods of time where the speakers had to answer questions on the spot and from the audience. Third speakers, Yasmeen and Sinead, had to prepare their speeches throughout the debate itself, with help from their teammates and note-takers. At the start of the debate, our hosts Helena Birowka and Olivia Clark, introduced the sides, opposition and proposition, and the motion, “This house believes that social media should be banned for under eighteens”. Nawshin introduced the speakers from the different sides and Terri made sure that all of the speakers kept within their allocated time slots during the debate, whether it was to answer questions or to give their speeches. However, in the end, the opposing side won (Anna, Fatima, Sinead and Elena) and the overall winning debater of both sides was Ashwin Kular. All of the debaters put an incredible amount of effort into their speeches, all of which were an exceptionally high standard for Year 9 students; to witness and take part in the debate was an amazing opportunity, and for that I have to thank Miss Armstrong, for organising the debate club, and the judges for giving us feedback and judging our first ever Year 9 debate.’ - Rebecca Carpenter, Year 9, Debate Club Member

On Friday, 13 December, the 2019-2020 cohort of Interact students launched their first fundraising project for the Ocean Clean-Up and Young Minds with a hugely successful Christmas Tombola, which saw top prizes of hairdressing vouchers, make-up lessons and luxury bath items up for grabs, as well as dozens of chocolate prizes! A huge thank you to all members of the Interact Club for their hard work with securing contributions from across Windsor, for their stalwart organisational skills, and their exuberant effort to raise funds for two very worthwhile charities.

On Saturday, Mr Andrews and two Year 11 students, Bella McKenna and Syeda Naqvi, volunteered at a fundraising day for Scrumys (a toddler sport and activity company which run activities at WGS on Saturday mornings). There was a mixture of activities and games running throughout the morning, as well as a number of stalls selling homemade Christmas gifts and cakes, with the aim of raising money and awareness for the Borne charity which funds research into preventing premature birth. The

students were a fantastic help, setting up for the event and also getting stuck in helping run some of the games, and even becoming the mascot for the day. The event organiser and owner of Scrumys was so impressed with their contribution that he even offered them a possible job opportunity in the future! A big well done for helping make the event a success, which was further boosted by the visit of former England rugby player and Sky Sports presenter Will Greenwood, who also donated a signed shirt for the charity to auction.

Science Club This week, the students were set a task of making a Christmas Tree out of Jelly Tots and cocktail sticks. There were extra points on offer for design and structure. Students really enjoyed the Christmas competition and are looking forward to the New Year when we will be making snow! - Dr Guy

Get Berkshire Active Awards Congratulations to Jodie Smith (Year 13) and Emily Murphy (Year 12), who have been shortlisted for the 8

th annual Get Berkshire Active Awards. Jodie and

Emily were nominated, along with a host of other students, for their sporting prowess across the calendar year both within school and outside school. Jodie has been shortlisted for Berkshire Sports Woman of the Year for her prowess in athletics across this year. She represented WSEH in the Müller British Championships, where she competed against Katerina Johnson-Thompson who went on to win the World Championships in Doha. Jodie has excelled as the season has progressed and we now wish her luck in the upcoming awards ceremony. Emily has been shortlisted for Berkshire Junior Sports Personality of the Year. Emily had a turbulent end to the season due to injuries and leaving Arsenal Women to play for Chelsea Women. Since

Emily has been at Chelsea, she has gone from strength to strength, continuing to represent England at the U17 European Qualifiers. Since October, Emily has gone on to represent Chelsea first team, coming on against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies in the Continental Cup, and again the next week, as a substitute against Birmingham City. We are now looking forward to the award ceremony on Friday, 28 February, in Reading. Good luck to both students and well done to the other Windsor Girls’ students who were nominated: Chatal Bundalian, Kiera Jacobs Shrivastava, Millie Prelogar and Charlotte Dewar.
