President,s Comer

If our editor, Jack BIecher, allowed me to subtitle m}.column, I would name this one 'cLooking BackwardsWhile Moving Forward." Jack runs a tight ship and

makes no such allowances. But think ofthat as the themeofthis column anyway.

Janus, the Roman god for whom the first month oftheyear is named, is generally depicted as having a face on thefront side ofhis head and a second face on the back. He isthereby ableto look forward and backward at the same time.Naming the first month ofthe year after him makes sensesince we typically both review the past and look forward tothe future atthe time wetransition from oneyearto the next.

Toget intothespiritofwritingthiscolumn, I foundapictureofyours truly taken 35 years ago. I hardly recognize myselflMy appearance has obviously changed (but let,s not discusswhether or not there has been any improvement- please!).

Ifwe lookbackatourOLLI over its history} its appearancehas also obviously changed - from a small group ofpeoplestruggling to get something going to a pretty healthy andvigorous lOOO member organization. We have gone fromofferingjust a few.'lecture" classes to being able togive ourmembers a wide variety ofeducational/cultural/recreational/

artistic class experiences. Today ourmembers canjoin discussion groups, make music and art, and hone theircomputer use skills as well as listento academic lectures - all at ourOLLI. We have come a long waytogether over our l5 year history.

But wecannotaffordto simply lookbackward and revel in our accom-

by Carl Curtis

Carl CllrtiSplishments. And forme, simply ''looking"forward is not enough. I think we need to envision whatwe want this OLLI to be like five or ten years hence, andthen develop plans for achieving our vision. We need tofigure out how we are going to become a financially viable

(self-supporting) organization that continues to provide awonderful array ofclasses and programs for the folks age50 and over who reside in our geographic area. In short,we need to do for our OLLI the same thing that we need todo for ourselves - engage in some legacy planning. This isthe reason we are moving forward with a strategic planning

process. Your active participation is encouraged. Contactour Vice President, Malcolm Green, ifinterested.

V irtually all religions have aholiday about this time ofthe year so whatever yours

is 6Have a Happy and HEALTHY`.time, and if it ism,t your thing, enjoy yourselfanyway.

Yours truly has been away from California for threemonths, living in Washington in a little town calledSkamania. The town has 600 residents and the ccbig city"nearby has a population of I,200.

The Columbia River is the liquid highway that dividesWashington from Oregon. My house is directly on theColumbia where the salmon are the tastiest and the sealions frolic on the decks in the water sunning themselves.Woody Guthrie wrote many of his songs while visitingthere. Our SUN editor, Jack Blecherand his wife, Renee Simon,

came to visit us. Jack, ofcourse, went fishing. Fortunately?the local store had fish we could buy so we did have supper

that evening. But Renee contracted an infection in herfinger. When the infection persisted, I called our neighbor,Bob, a retired physician. He came over with his wife, also adoctor, and another neighbor who happened to be a lawyer. The medical team arrived with the legal staffin case ofamalpractice suit. (Californians are suspect as prone to sue). The group returned the next day} as well, to make sure thatReneels finger was on the way to recovery. As you can tell, there are c6house calls" in Skamania.

Our Jamie Payan celebrated her 65th birthday withthirteen friends and family on a cruise to Mexico. Yourstruly celebrated her 85th with a trip to New York City. Twoofour nonagenarians celebrated birthdays, Syd Benowitz95 and Otto Ross 98.Cindy Smith, ouroffice administrator and the backbone of

OLLI, is expecting herfirst grandchild as is Mona Morriswho is a volunteer in our office.

Enjoy the winterholidays and yournew classes. And don,Iforget to take that trip you were talking about.

A Look at Two WindowsOperating Systems

by Kathy Winkenwerder

First there was that mixed

press about Vista; thenWindows 7 was releasedthis year and it got greatreviews.

If you bought a newPC within the last three

years, it came with the VistaKalhv WinkemrerdeI.

operating system. Ifyou bought a new PC within the pastlO months. it,s running Windows 7. In either case, these twonew systems look and operate differently from WindowsXP and will take some getting used to.

Ifyou have a PC with one ofthese new operating systems,

you should think about taking the INTRODUCTION TOWINDOWS 7/ VISTA class. Instructor Wesley Peck willshow you how. to navigate in the new environments, thefiling systems and how to find your documents in them, and how to use the new settings.

In Vista you'll see the improved desktop graphics, learnhow to personalize your computer, get familiar with thenew search feature, new sidebar. the redesigned start menu, the taskbars, toolbars and more.

Windows 7 builds on the Vista desktop look and addseven more graphic effects. You'll see demonstrations ofthe new snapt peek, shake and flip aero features on thedesktop, the new, taskbar and how to pin programs to it.And you,ll see hot+. to use themes and backgrounds to make

your desktop unique. So what about lO-Year-old Windows XP? Starting October~

2010, it will not be available for sale to most consumers. However more than halfthe people who operate personalcomputers use the still popular operating system. To manyofthem, it's a comfortable old friend. Should you upgrade?Ifyour computer is more than five years old, most expertssay no, because your computer w.on't have the necessarymemory or processing power to run the new operatingsystem. Wait until you get a new computer. Then take thenext Windows 7 class.

Harvest Moon Volunteer Luncheon

Where would we be without volunteers? Without

people whogiveoftheirtimeandtalenttohospitals, schools, senior homes, libraries, churches and

OLLI. most ofthose places would be closed or inadequatelyserviced. Wearetrulyblessedwith wonderful, giving, joyfulvolunteers atOLLI. Sojoyful and full oflifethat Carl Curtis, our esteemed president, could hardly contain us.This was the spirit at the volunteer luncheon on September

24th. The setting was pure autumn with tables decoratedwith autumn leaves andcolors. A bigthanksto Karin Covey}Jamie Payan} Barbara Decker and Grace Blankenshipwho planned the lovely luncheon.

Carl welcomed the large group and thanked them fortheir

participation in continuingto help provide excellence at ourspecial university. He also had some good news. We nowhave a new doorthat will increase the capacity ofroom lot.Additionally there is now a large screen TV in the lobby

which will be used for announcements. Messages will bechanged several times a week.We were then entertained and invited to sing along withthe

Fran and OLLI chorus. Following this delightful interlude, volunteers enjoyed a delicious array of four salads andassorted sandwiches. Then came a perfectly sweet ending-

-cieme puffs and chocolate eclairs. From the laughter and

animated conversation filling the room it was obvious that

guests were having lots offun. After lunch Carl gave a special thanks to Cindy Smith

who wears several hats very well. He introduced Dr.Barbara White, our executive director, who also thankedthe volunteers. She said that we are a premier university inOsherls eyes. Barbara closed by quoting G.B. Shaw,.Wemake the path by walking." We certainly do. Let's keepdoing that volunteer walk and recruit more volunteers tokeep our OLLI in premier status.

Enjoy the Madness

Walks there a person (atOLLI!) who has NOTbeen frightened as a

child or young person by anEdgar Allan Poe short story?Re-live it again and this time

you can actually enjoy theinsanity ofthe situations!

Dr. Arthur Axelrad, whohas his M.A. and Ph.D. from

by Linda Fuchik

Ai.tl"r A_xelradNew York University and wasa professor at CSULB for 32 years. has previously taughtclasses here at OLLI on Sherlock Holmes and Jane Austen. In EDGAR ALLAN POE: MASTER OF MYSTERYAND MADNESS, he will now happily share his expertiseabout the innovative author who literally..created terroron paper!``

c|I became insane

with long periodsof sanity)" Poesupposedly said.Sounds like a

pretty good indi-cation that someof the incrediblybizarre and poi-

gnant events thattook place in Poe,sshort life providedmotivation for hiswriting. This willbe discussed in thebeginning of the

class and then Dr. Axelrad will focus on some of Poe,sshort stories and poems. There is a short and inexpensiveanthology that students may purchase-or simply use thelibrary to get the class selections.

Yes, when children read a story in which the authoradoptsthe persona ofan insane man and tells a spell-binding tale.or speaks calmly ofpeople being buried alit,e. or tells ofaheart beating beneath the floor it Stirs uP frightening images. But as adults, we canjoin Dr. Axelrad as he reminds usthat we can enjoy the stories in an amusing way becausethey are not meant to be taken seriously. Childhood fright

gives way to chuckles!

A Truly Dedicated Volunteer

Karin Covey is so familiarto all ofus at OLLI. Sheseems to be in ouroffice most ofthe time workingdiligently, on the computer, talking to students,

answering the phone, problem-solving, and generally keep-ing our office together and functioning.

Now, how did all this start? In 200l, Karinls son, Gregtwho was working at the print shop at CSULB, noticed an adin the 49'er. The ad described classes at Senior University

(now known as OLLI).Karin saw that the school was offering a class in genealogy.

So she wentto the office and signed up. She loved the classso much that she then enrolled in yoga and photography.

At the end ofthe session, Karin filled out an evaluationform, which also asked for volunteers. She checked a boxthat said,..maybe." Jean Lowe, then our volunteer com-mittee chair, called her. The rest is history.Forthe past nine years, Karin has been essential to the effi-

cient operation ofourschool office. She has been a longtimememberofourGoverning Council, has worked in our Down-

Town campusoffice and is nowserving herthirdterm as OLLrstreasurer. Shesees that all themonies go to theright places andthat our bills are

paid.Karin has been

married for overKarin balancing the budget 50 years to Bch

and has lived inthe Long Beach area for all that time. Her son Gregt whostarted her on her volunteer career, still lives in LongBeach as well. Karin loves travel, reading and-lucky forOLLI-volunteering.

From helping members register to figuring out OLLI,sannual budget, Karin loves everything about volunteering. After nearly a decade, the quality and quantity ofKarin'swork have not diminished. She seems to have learnedhow to avoid burnout by maintaining a happy balancebetween her many hours of dedicated work at OLLI andthe rest ofher life.Karin is passionately committed to OLLI's continuing suc-

cess and growth. The way to achievethis, she believes, is by

zealous fundraisingand building enroll-ment at our LeisureWorld and Down-Town campuses. She points out thatsince l996, OLLI?sannual membershipfee has increasedjust Sl5 and the lec-ture class fee hasremained SlO.

It,s Never too Late to Leam New Things

As one ofthe very first students at, now OLLI, abouta dozen years ago I can verify this statement. At 98

years ofage now, I shall claim to be the oldest student, ifthis is true.To honor my advanced age, I moved into a retirementhome several months ago. A false move! Nobodywalked much, nobody invited me tojoin them for meals, and there were no classes ofnote. A return to my oldhome in Leisure World, Seal Beach (as a widower fornow lO years) the only answer. A couple ofyears agoI was instrumental in getting OLLI to come to LeisureWorld and was so happy to attend classes there. I waswelcomed back with open arms and the message to allmy many OLLI friends is this: attend as long as youcan do so physically and mentally-you'll stay young!

About Our ProsMeet Larry Hicks Computer Lab Instuctor

by Kathy Winkenwerder

M eet Larry Hicks computer lab instructor. Heteaches the INTRODUCTION TO DIGITALCAMERA class fall, winter and spring terms.

How did you hear about OLLI?A week after I retired in 2003, I saw a teaching colleaguewho had some OLLI material and he told me what OLLIwas all about. I went right to OLLI and was impressed withwhat I saw. I met Con Rader, who showed me around thelab and talked to me for several hours. Ijoined right away.

Why did you start to volunteer in the lab?At first I took computerclasses and coached in a few classes.I was learning new things and having fun so ljust kept going.

What classes have you taught? At first I taught a class about the XP operating system, andlateron, beginning and intermediate computerclasses. ThenI started teaching the digital photography class.

What did you do before you came to OLLI?For 38 years I was a teacher in the Long Beach UnifiedSchool District, spending most of my time at MillikanHigh School, where I taught Health, U.S. History} BasicPsychology and English.

You're one ofthe few instructors in the lab who taughtin his work life. Are there differences between yourhigh school and your OLLI students? The main difference is that OLLI students are motivatedto be in class and to learn. In addition, many ofthem takeclasses because they know that learning stimulates theirbrains and keeps their thinking sharp.

What do you enjoy about teaching?I love seeing the reaction of people when they are learn-ing new things. I see the same look ofenthusiasm on thefaces ofOLLI students that I saw on my younger students.Their eyes light up and they want to go out and try whatthey'vejust heard.

How did you choose which class to teach?Photography is something I love to do and I wanted toshare my knowledge of it with others. I also felt I couldhelp people who might be cautious about trying this newdigital technology.

What was your first computer? It was the original Apple we got at school in l994.

What was your first camera? My parents bought me a Brownie Hawkeye when I was inthe 5th grade. I saved my allowance to buy film for it. Thatwas the beginning ofa serious hobby for me.

For the Winter Session Larry will be teachingIntroduction to Digital Camera
