Annual Google Play Revenue in Germany Grew 150% in 2014 In 2014, Germany was the sixth largest market by combined iOS App Store and Google Play
revenue. This made it the second largest market in Europe, trailing only the United Kingdom.
Revenue in the German app market is growing rapidly — combined iOS and Google Play
revenue in Germany was around 70% higher in 2014 than in 2013. However, Germany is
distinct from the overall worldwide situation in that the majority of this 2014 revenue growth
was derived from Google Play. Google Play app revenue has grown so rapidly that it recently
surpassed iOS revenue in Germany. As distribution of revenue between app stores is a key
component informing publishers’ app strategies in different markets, we took a closer look at
what was driving the continued rise of Google Play in Germany.

Google Play’s Rapid Rise in Germany
Although the iOS App Store showed continued revenue growth throughout 2014, revenue in
Google Play exploded. Revenue in 2014 from iOS in Germany was 1.3x 2013 revenue, while
2014 app revenue from Google Play was 2.5x its 2013 level. The resulting app market
distribution is significantly different from that in major European markets such as the United
Kingdom, where the iOS App Store remains the dominant player in app monetization.
In January 2015, revenue from the iOS App Store in the United Kingdom was approximately
2.3x app revenue from Google Play. In Germany for the same month, Google Play app
revenue was approximately 1.1x iOS App Store revenue.
