Science units are for grades 3, 4, or 5.
Each classroom unit begins with a 20-30 minute live videoconference with our instructors and our cool wild animals.
The online lesson plans and activities can be completed as quickly as two weeks or expanded to several weeks, depending upon your schedule and students’ excitement.
Wildmind, formerly Wildlife Associates, is a non-profit educational organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area and with a national reach since 1980. We serve over 100,000 young people every year with our nationally recognized dynamic, exciting and interactive wildlife programs. All of the animals came into our care because they are non-releasable and can never survive on their own in the wild so we make the commitment to care for these amazing animals for their entire lives. Our acclaimed environmental education assemblies have always featured these real live wild animals as teachers to nurture empathy for all life, to engage students in the nature of science so they can address real-time and real-world ecological issues as well as to empower them to become informed and inspired environmental leaders of tomorrow.
We have adapted our nearly 40 years of teaching experience to create these grade-specific and standards- aligned classroom units that include STEM/STEAM practices and activities.
Each classroom unit begins when Wildmind staff and animals “visit” your classroom on the first day of the unit via live, interactive web-based videoconference. Your students will become excited, engaged and immersed in a learning experience that focuses on a real-world environmental issue. They will also learn to care for the environ-ment and experience the NGSS through collaboration that reaches a common goal.
Each NGSS Science Unit comes with an online curriculum guide, lesson plans, activities, supplemental materials, Common Core links, and much more!
3rd Grade Curriculum This unit will help your students to understand the dynamic interde-pendency of all species in an ecosystem. Using stories of animals at the Wildmind sanctuary, each lesson will teach your students about ecosystem balance, about cause and effect to understand what happens when that balance is disrupted. Your students will become experts about a balanced environment, animal jobs and natural systems. As experts, your students will write a buddy book that they can read to others.
4th Grade CurriculumThe primary focus of this unit is to explore the importance of sustainable energy as well as the structure, function and value of raptors, and to examine the human impact to these birds by wind turbines. Using stories of raptors at the Wildmind sanctuary, students will engage in lessons on animal/human habitat overlaps, sustainable energy technologies, design and decision-making to make predictions to generate a solution to this ecological crisis. Students will then prepare a presentation to propose and support their solutions to this conflict between raptors and turbines.
5th Grade CurriculumThe main goal of this unit is for your students to understand the impor-tance of both human and animal corridors. Animals have corridors through the wild that are essential to their survival. Using stories of animals at the Wildmind sanctuary, each lesson will teach your students about animal corridors as well as both natural and human impacts in a natural system that can disrupt an animal corridor. Students will begin to grasp the influence of science, engineering and technology on society and the natural world, both detrimental as well as to engage in decision making and problem solving. Students will share their newly acquired knowledge to create a Public Service Announcement to help educate others about the importance of protecting wildlife corridors.
Let our animals help you bring science alive for your students!
NGSS ConnectionsThe lessons throughout each unit will build on the video conference on the first day. The lessons throughout the units connect to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) via bundled Performance Expectations (PE), which are aligned to Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) , Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) and Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs) .
The colors corresponding to these standards appearing throughout the lesson plans are consistent with the NGSS color schemes.
The lessons will also align with select CCSS-ELA skills as well as California State Environmental Principles and Concepts (EP&C) .
