PREPARATION:Sand your surface and wipe with a tack cloth. Fill any small nail holes and sand those smooth. I didn’t seal the box, but you can if you prefer to. I used a lot of tape because of the straight lines I wanted to achieve. It isn’t necessary if you can paint straight. (I can’t). Mark off the sections that will be painted Country Blue. Basecoat them a couple of times sanding in between coats of paint. Paint the other sections Deep Midnight Blue. Repeat as needed, also sanding in be-tween coats of paint. Paint the support corners with a mix of Country Blue plus a small amount of Deep Midnight Blue. Float Lamp Black on the upper and lower area of the Deep Midnight Blue sections going over the corner supports. Float Deep Midnight Blue across the top of the lower bands of Country Blue. This fl oat is to resemble the top edge of that board. The Deep Midnight Blue side of your brush goes down, leaving the top edge faint in color. I needed the tape for almost all of the preparation. You will have a slight ridge where your paints meet. Sand lightly to remove without removing your painted background. I use a wadded piece of an old brown paper bag for this so that I don’t get into my background too much. The corner nails are fi rst roughed in with Deep Mid-night Blue. Using your liner brush, trail this color out to resemble a crack. For the nail heads paint them Slate Grey. Float Deep Midnight Blue under the crack lines coming out from the nails. The rest of the tinting will be done after painting the designs.

LEAVES AND GREENS:I would suggest painting most of your greens before adding the other objects.

I have used Plantation Pine, Hauser Medium Green, Foliage Green, and Olive Green for my foliage. These are fun and whimsical, by no means realistic, so just

play. Mix your greens on your brush, dirty brush several at a time. As an example, load your brush in Planta-tion Pine, side load it in any of the greens, and scumble places. Without cleaning your brush, sideload it in Olive Green and add some highlights to areas. Add small stroke leaves by dirty brushing. Play. Some of the leaves that are on the fuzzy white weed, I loaded my fl at brush in greens, and stood it up on the tip and stroked some crooked leaves. Paint some of these thin and some thick.

SHEER PENNY WEEDS:I’m sure these have a name but for me they’re sheer penny weeds. Sideload your brush in Bleached Sand (thin) and stroke in your weeds. When dry, sideload again in Warm White and fl oat one side. Add Warm White line work on one side and add a vein.

FUZZY WHITE WEEDS (BABY'S BREATH)Load the tip of a scruff y brush in Bleached Sand. Light-ly tap the weed in a half moon shape. Without cleaning your brush (maybe wiping it on a paper towel), pick up Warm White and stipple some stronger color to the tops. The greens are the greens I mentioned earlier. Vary the colors.

GLOVES:Basecoat Warm White. Float your fi rst shading using Toff ee. Float a second shading using thin Milk Choco-late. The stitches are Dark Chocolate.

RABBIT:We are going to keep him easy. Slip-slap your fi rst coat of color in using Camel. When dry, load the corner of a small fl at brush in Camel and begin to dab in color to look like he’s fuzzy. Pick up Honey Brown and dab in some shading. Work these colors back and forth to blend into each other. Add a little extra shading on the ears using Dark Chocolate. You can add extra highlights around the edges using Camel plus a small amount of Warm White. Float his eyes in with Dark Chocolate. Without cleaning your brush, pick up Lamp Black and fl oat over the Dark Chocolate, but not cov-ering it completely. The highlight is Warm White. His eyebrows are Dark Chocolate.

STRIPED BEE:Basecoat him fi rst with Camel. When dry, basecoat over the camel with Golden Straw. Repeat if needed. Float Honey Brown for shading. On the second shad-ing, pick up Honey Brown plus a small amount of Deep Burgundy, blend back and forth on your palette, and

then fl oat over the existing shading. Highlight the bulge area with Moon Yellow. Repeat if needed. The head, stripes, and antennae are Lamp Black. Side load your brush in Warm White and fl oat in the wings. Add some liner detail using Warm White.

SPOTTED BEE:Basecoat Camel. Basecoat again with Golden Straw. Shade Honey Brown. Pick up a small amount of Deep Burgundy and fl oat over the fi rst shading. Highlight Moon Yellow. Float or dry brush her cheek with a mix of Golden Straw plus a touch of Santa Red. Her mouth and eyelash are Lamp Black. Her little nose is Santa Red. The large white dots on her back are Warm White. The small black dots are Lamp Black. Add a bow using Santa Red highlighted Boysenberry Pink. Add some greens in it.

LOVE BUGS: (PURPLE)Basecoat the head Camel. Repeat as needed. The cheeks are fl oated or dry brushed using a mix of Camel plus a tad of Santa Red. The eyes are Warm White with Lamp Black pupils. Add a Warm White highlight dot to each. The nose is Boysenberry Pink plus Santa Red. Add a tiny Warm White highlight dot. The smile line is Lamp Black. His pink lip is the cheek color. Add greens using all or part of your green palette colors. The pink body next to the head is basecoated Boysenberry Pink, shaded Santa Red. Highlight with a mix of Boysenberry Pink plus a tad of Warm White. Add a fi nal Warm White highlight. The rest of the body is basecoated Wild Or-chid shaded Plum. Highlight with a mix of Wild Orchid plus a tad of Warm White. Add a fi nal Warm White highlight. His wings are fl oated using thin Warm White. Detail an outline with stronger Warm White. Add a thin wash color of Wild Orchid on each wing close to his body. His antennae are Grey Sky.

LOVE BUG: (YELLOW)The head is painted like the fi rst one. His body is basecoated Camel, shaded Honey Brown. Add ad-ditional tints by fl oating Boysenberry Pink over the Honey Brown. Add a Warm White highlight shine. The wings and antennae are the same as the fi rst bug.

FAIRY:Basecoat her face, neck, and arms Warm Beige. Repeat as needed. Float thin Terra Cotta across her forehead, and down the outside of each arm. Float a stronger shadow under her chin. Float or dry brush her cheeks with Cotton Candy, and then Cotton Candy plus a tiny tad of Boysenberry Pink. Don’t forget her nose. Her

eyes are Warm White with Lamp Black pupils. Add a thin Lamp Black line on each side of her eye. The highlight dot is Warm White. Loosely lay in her hair with Golden Straw. Add some shading using thin Terra Cotta. Detail her curls with stronger Terra Cotta. If they need more contrast, use some Dark Chocolate. Add Warm White stars. Her dress is a mix of Cotton Candy plus a tad of Boysenberry Pink. Shade with Boysen-berry Pink. Her wings are thin Warm White. Float thin Deep Midnight Blue around her wings and the right side of her hair. Add greens to her head and wings. The vine is Terra Cotta with added greens. Spatter Warm White slightly over her wings and hair.

PURPLE BUG:This bug is painted Wild Orchid, shaded Plum. Highlight with Wild Orchid plus a tad of Warm White. Add a fi nal Warm White highlight. His eyes are a small stroke of Dark Chocolate. Add Lamp Black on top of the Dark Chocolate not covering it completely. Add a Warm White highlight to each. His nose is Boysenberry Pink plus a tad of Santa Red. His smile is Lamp Black. His little legs are Lamp Black. His wings and antennae are painted the same as the Love Bugs.

PURPLE LILACS:Slip-slap Wild Orchid over the area of your fl owers. Pick up Plum and tap in random areas. Do this wet into wet for a softer blend of colors. Add petals by loading your brush in Wild Orchid and side loading it in Warm White. Lay in half circle shaped petals to get your fl ower ef-fect. Allow some to fall out over the sides of the fl ow-ers. Spatter lightly with Warm White.

PUFFY PINK FLOWERS:These little cuties are a combination of colors. Cotton Candy, Poodleskirt Pink, Wild Orchid, and Warm White. The idea is to pick one of the colors on your brush, touch your brush in Warm White and tap in a circle allowing some uneven edges. You can pick up more than one color at a time for a variation. When fi nished, fl oat a stronger color of your basic fl ower on one side for tinting. Add some extra Warm White for highlight. I think of all of these items as weeds, do don’t go for perfection.

DAISY:The yellow petals are Golden Straw. Shade Honey Brown. Highlight some of the tips Moon Yellow. The center is stippled in using your greens. Try to keep the center light in color and the edges a little stronger in color. Add Warm White dots randomly.

BLUE LILACS:I’m not sure if they have blue lilacs but that’s the best way for me to identify these fl owers for you. Start slip-slapping Sapphire randomly While that is still wet, pick up Deep Midnight Blue and add where you want some shading. To form the petals, pick up Sapphire on your small fl at brush, and sideload it in Warm White. Stroke in little half circles to form the petals. Allow some to fall out over the original shape of the fl ower. Spatter lightly with Warm White.

SEED PACKET:Basecoat Warm White. Shade Toff ee. Add extra shad-ing to the lower left corner with Honey Brown. Add some tinting to this area by picking up Honey Brown plus a small amount of Deep Burgundy and fl oat the lower left corner again. The little drop stroke fl owers on the packet are Country Blue and Tangerine. Add stroke leaves coming out of the top of the packet using your greens.

GARDEN SCOOP:Are carrots weeds? I thought the carrot fi t nicely in with the theme here. The grey area of the scoop is basecoated Slate Grey. Shade Zinc. Add thin tints of Burnt Sienna and Indian Turquoise. I added some extra Olive Green to the greens. The carrot handle is basecoated Tangelo Orange, shaded Georgia Clay. Highlight Tangerine, and then Tangerine plus a small amount of Warm White.

GARLAND: (GROW) Basecoat the little circles Warm White. Repeat as needed. Shade fi rst with Toff ee and then thin Milk Chocolate. Tint with thin Indian Turquoise. Add Lamp Black outlining under each circle. The wording is lamp Black. The vine is Terra Cotta with some Dark Choco-late added randomly.

ORANGE-PINK LILACS:Start slip-slapping in Wild Orchid and Cotton Candy together. Add some shading areas by picking up Plum and working in randomly. Clean your brush and pick up Tangerine plus Peaches’n Cream and blend this into the fl ower. If you do this wet into wet, your colors will blend. For your petals, pick up your basic color on the orchid area plus a little Cotton Candy and stroke in some petals. Pick up Warm White and add some lighter petals. On the orange area, pick up Peaches’n Cream and start your half circle petals. As you paint, pick up Warm White and add some lighter value petals. Spatter lightly using Warm White.

PUFFY PEACH FLOWERS:These are a mix of Tangerine plus Cotton Candy. Stipple or pounce these in a ball shape. Pick up Warm White with your colors and add some extra highlights. Try to have some of these a little pink and some a little more peach color. Don’t be perfect. Add Warm White dots randomly.

DETAIL:I added tints to the boards by fl oating Burnt Sienna along some of the edges. I also fl oated Indian Turquoise for other tints along some of the edges.

FINISH:Spray varnish several times allowing to dry in between coats.
